Zaragoza release centre-back Fernando Meira after injury-plagued spell

The Liga strugglers have decided to part company with the Portuguese stopper after he suffered several knocks since his arrival at the club last summer
Zaragoza have announced on their website they have terminated the contract of Fernando Meira.

The 33-year-old defender signed for Zaragoza in the summer with hopes of reviving his career after enduring a frustrating spell at Zenit St. Petersburg.

However, constant fitness problems marred the Portugal international's time at the Liga club and restricted him to 12 appearances in the first half of the campaign.

"The successive fitness problems which he has suffered have prevented him from play at the level he wanted, which made him reach this agreement to terminate his contract," a Zaragoza statement read.

"We would like to thank the professionalism and chivalry shown by Fernando Meira, who voluntarily renounced to his salary until 2013, a gesture with honours him."

The former Benfica stopper left Portugal in 2001 and played at Stuttgart and Galatasaray before joining Zenit in 2009.
