Barcelona's Eric Abidal sacrifices summer holiday to improve fitness levels

No rest for French international who says he cannot afford to waste time on holiday as he has plenty of work to cut through ahead of the new campaign
Eric Abidal has revealed he will give up his holiday to work on getting back to full fitness for Barcelona after undergoing surgery to remove a tumour on his liver in March.

His recovery has progressed remarkably since the operation and he was able to play in the Champions League final at Wembley, where he lifted the trophy, as well as France's Euro 2012 qualifier against Belarus.

"No, I will not go on vacation," he told El Mundo Deportivo.

"I have to catch up, get fit to be on top form for the start of the season which will be tough as we have the Spanish Supercup [against Real Madrid] and the European Supercup [against Porto] to play in.

"I cannot go on holiday and I am doing this for the club and the fans."

And on his form thus far following surgery he said: "I cannot complain as to how everything has turned out. It has been two months since the surgery and I am happy I was able to help my team at Wembley."
