Real Madrid's general manager Jorge Valdano is on the verge of walking out of the club according to reports in Spain, with a breakdown in the relationship with coach Jose Mourinho indicated as the main reason for the Argentine's departure.

El Mundo Deportivo has stated that the former Tenerife and Valencia boss has found working with the Portuguese difficult and has been frustrated by his lack of access to the first team.

The media source indicates that president Florentino Perez is keen to keep the 55-year-old at the club to use his expertise and also to avoid any more controversy around the capital city team.

If Valdano does leave, a severence payment of €5.1 million may be due to the South American for the termination of the remaining two years of his contract.

Potential replacements have already been lined up, with ex-defender Fernando Hierro one of the front runners.
