Spain decline Copa America invitation

World Cup winners won't play in Copa America as they decline an invite 24 hours before Japan announce whether they will participate in the tournament
Spain have confirmed they won't take part in the Copa America in Argentina in July and apologised for not being able to play in the tournament.

A spokesman for the Spanish Football Association (RFEF) said on Wednesday they had declined the invite from Argentina to participate in place of Japan, who seem like they will be playing as originally scheduled, but that is expected to be confirmed on Thursday.

Jorge Carretero of the RFEF suggested the dates of the tournament between July 1 and 24 were likely to cause an organisational problem.

"We will not participate, but we are very grateful to the Argentinean federation for their invite. We cannot be present for organisational reasons. We are very sorry."

His message comes on the day J-League clubs said they would not release top stars if the Blue Samurai were confirmed as tournament participants when the Japan Football Association (JFA) announces its decision tomorrow.
