Valencia Fail In Attempt To Include Loan Defender Marius Stankevicius In Champions League Squad

Valencia fail to bypass UEFA regulations to include on-loan Sampdoria defender Marius Stankevicius in their Champions League squad.
Valencia have failed in their attempt to include loan defender Marius Stankevicius in their Champions League squad for their second round meeting against Schalke.

The Lithuanian's participation is forbidden under UEFA regulations due to his appearance for Sampdoria in the play-off round at the beginning of the season, meaning he cannot compete for another side in the tournament in the same campaign.

Los Che had hoped to find a loophole in the ruling in order to include the stopper in their squad list, but their chances of overturning the regulation are almost zero.

Former team-mates at Sampdoria, Antonio Cassano and Giampaolo Pazzini, have also moved on, to Milan and Inter respectively, and are subsequently banned under the same legislation.

The news will serve as a blow to coach Unai Emery, who has relied upon Stankevicius as his first-choice centre-back since the turn of the year.
