Ambitious Villarreal president Fernando Roig insists the target for his club this season represents becoming the definitive Primera Division force behind Real Madrid and Barcelona.
The Yellow Submarines are currently third in La Liga after an excellent start to the season, and have garnered praise after their battling performance against the Blaugrana on Saturday evening which ultimately ended in a 3-1 defeat.
Speaking with AS, Roig was proud of the efforts of his players at the Camp Nou, and stated his belief that the club can establish itself as Spain's third team.
He stated: “The people of Barcelona celebrated the win as if it were a final. It put a lump in my throat.
“In the league over the last five years, we are placed fourth. Three years ago we were second, ten points ahead of Barcelona. Our aspiration is to become the alternative power to Barca and Real Madrid within the next five years. I want people to think of Villarreal when they think of yellow, as they think of Manchester United when they think of the Red Devils.
“We must distinguish ourselves by producing good football, being polite and friendly, and do things right to meet the needs of our customers, who of course are our audience.”
