According to a report by Voetbal International, Europa League holders Atletico Madrid are closely monitoring highly rated midfielder Ibrahim Afellay, currently under contract with Dutch giants PSV.
The Rojiblancos have been in the market for an attacking midfielder for quite a while and were initially interested in signing Bosnian international Zvjezdan Misimovic. However, he eventually decided to leave Wolfsburg for Galatasaray.
Therefore, Atletico have turned their attention elsewhere and head coach Quique Sanchez Flores supposedly sees Afellay as the perfect addition to his team.
The 24-year-old Afellay is a product of the PSV youth academy and has made well over 100 Eredivisie appearances for the Eindhoven side. Afellay has also represented Holland several times and was part of the Dutch team that finished runners-up at the 2010 World Cup.
Afellay's contract is due to expire in the summer of 2011 and the versatile midfielder is reluctant to sign a contract extension. Atletico are reportedly hoping to sign the gifted playmaker on a free transfer next year, but they could also decide to make a move for him in the January transfer window.
