Real Madrid director general Jorge Valdano has indicated that he was pleased with what he saw as Los Blancos defeated Bayern Munich 4-2 on penalty kicks after a scoreless 90 minutes in Bavaria in the Franz Beckenbauer Cup on Friday evening.
The sides got together for an exhibition as a testimonial to FCB great Franz Beckenbauer, with a somewhat rotated German outfit doing well to hold what was almost a full strength Madrid side. Nevertheless, with two weeks to go before the start of hostilities in Spain, Valdano believes that coach Jose Mourinho has his team moving in the right direction.
“We played up to par against a team that have much more work under their belt. We were much more orderly in the second half although the team is still in pre-season preparation,” he noted to the club’s official website.
“I like how our two newest players played. [Sami] Khedira may not be in his best shape, but he fulfilled his duties perfectly, and [Ricardo] Carvalho provided security in defence.
“The trophy we just won is important, as is tonight's honoree. He was one of the best players of all time.”
Los Blancos meet Mallorca on the opening day of the Primera Division season.
