A deadly double from Eduardo Salvio and a clinching goal from Sergio Aguero helped Atletico Madrid see off Tenerife 3-1 at the Vicente Calderon this evening, in perfect preparation for their Europa League clash versus Liverpool on Thursday.

Salvio netted twice in the first half, and although Tenerife briefly threatened a comeback through Roman, Aguero rounded off the win in the closing stages to ensure they leave for Anfield on a positive note.

The home side started with the Argentine duo of Eduardo Salvio and Sergio Aguero in attack, and the former introduced himself to La Liga in some style.

The 19-year old moved to the Vicente Calderon from Lanus in January, and has offered cameos that suggest he is a player with huge potential. However this evening when given a central role, he took his chance superbly.

On ten minutes, he played in Aguero and after his effort was saved by Sergio Aragoneses, Salvio reacted quickest to steer the ball home from a tight angle and hand Los Colchoneros an ideal start to the match.

The capital club are marooned in mid-table, meaning their league fixtures between now and the end of the season will have little impact on their final placing, but in the first half they produced excellent attacking play, and after a number of inspired saves from Aragoneses, they doubled their advantage on the half hour mark.

Juan Valera burst down the right, and cut the ball back perfectly into the path of Salvio, who dispatched the pass beautifully into the roof of the net. It was a dream double, and his first goals in the Rojiblanco shirt.

After the interval though, it was a completely different match. Tenerife are fighting for their lives, and after a crucial away win for Valladolid at Sporting Gijon, they needed to take something to boost their own chances of survival.

They pushed the home side back into their own territory. Juanlu clipped the top of the crossbar from the edge of the area with a powerful shot, but they looked increasingly dangerous, and on the hour mark pulled a goal back to worry their hosts.

Substitute Dinei showed good skill on the wing, twisting and turning, before knocking the ball into the path of Roman, who showed great technique to curl the ball past David de Gea and into the corner.

Atletico were nervous; Flores responded by introducing Simao and Diego Forlan into the action, having rested both players prior to the second leg of their Europa League tie versus Liverpool to come in midweek.

Their experience helped steady the ship, and Sergio Aguero helped allay any fears of a Tenerife comeback by netting the clinching third goal.

The little forward showed great strength and determination to hold off Pablo Sicilia and roll the ball past Aragoneses and into the corner. From that point on, Tenerife’s spirit was broken, and Atletico Madrid cruised to a comfortable win.

Flores and his players must now focus on their trip to England, while for Tenerife, matches are running out if they are to avoid an immediate return to the Segunda Division.
