Spain Heroes Guiza & Riera: We Have One Foot In The World Cup

The two players combined to secure a late, late victory for La Seleccion and both agreed that their main target is now within sight.

Spain moved one step closer to booking a ticket to South Africa for the 2010 World Cup finals, after grinding out a 2-1 win at Turkey last night thanks to Albert Riera’s injury-time strike.

The Liverpool winger was delighted to have played a huge part in securing the priceless three points at the ferocious Ali Sami Yet stadium but he also warned the team to remain humble.

“The important thing is always the three points. We have one foot in the World Cup now and we have a good sensation about making the finals,” he said during the post-match interview.

“We had control of the match and we kept on attacking until we obtained the win. Although we would have liked a more comfortable game, our ability to come from behind has left us feeling great.

“We continue to win but it is necessary to keep our feet on the ground. We must also keep on working hard like we have been because in football, you always lose just when you least expect it. We have to remain calm to extend our winning run.”

Meanwhile, striker Dani Guiza, who made the assist for Riera’s goal, said, “I wish I was able to score, but I celebrated just as much to have made the pass for the goal.

“I am satisfied that we won and to have taken advantage of the minutes the coach gives me. I’m always prepared to play five or even two minutes.

“I’m having a lot of luck with the Seleccion and I can’t ask for more. Wtih all the points that we have already won, we have one foot in the World Cup.”

Spain lead Group 5 of the UEFA World Cup qualifying zone with 18 points from six games, six points ahead of Bosnia in second and a full ten points clear of Turkey in third.
