Alderweireld open to Ajax return

The Tottenham centre-back has impressed for Mauricio Pochettino's side this season but admits that he may yet return to the Eredivisie side where he began his senior career

Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld admits that he may return to Ajax in the coming years, having begun his senior career in the Netherlands.

Alderweireld joined Spurs from Atletico Madrid last summer and has since thrived at White Hart Lane, playing in every Premier League game this season as the club have launched a sustained title challenge.

Spurs are currently second, seven points behind leaders Leicester, but the 27-year-old centre-back concedes that he harbours hopes of moving back to the Amsterdam ArenA, where he spent nine years prior to his move to Atletico.

"Ajax is a fantastic club and I would love to come back one day, but I won’t make any promises," he told De Telegraaf.

"I spent most of my career at Ajax and am thankful for those years. I was extremely happy in Amsterdam."

Alderweireld's current deal runs until 2020, and is set to feature for Tottenham when they face Stoke City on Monday.
