Manchester United's Fabio excited by prospect of joining Benfica on loan

Manchester United defender Fabio has revealed his excitement at the prospect of joining Benfica on a season-long loan deal next year.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson recently revealed plans to loan out the Brazilian as a way of giving him regular first-team opportunities, and speculation has linked him with a move to the Portuguese giants.

“I am excited about the opportunity to play for Benfica - a very famous and big club,” Fabio told A Bola.

“I feel very honoured by Benfica’s interest, but my transfer now depends on negotiations with Manchester United.”

The 21-year-old also admitted he has spoken to Fellipe Bastos, another Brazilian owned by Benfica, about the club, adding: “He spoke very well of the club.”

Fabio and his twin brother Rafael joined United back in January 2008, although they were unable to play until they had turned 18 in July later that year.

Despite a prolonged spell in the side last season, including a start against Barcelona in the Champions League final, Fabio has struggled for a consistent run of games this campaign, making just 14 appearances.
