Arsenal agree to sell Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona

Arsenal have have reached an agreement in principle with Barcelona for the transfer of Cesc Fabregas to Camp Nou, both clubs have announced.

The 24-year-old's transfer is now only subject is now little more than a formality, with personal terms and a routine medical standing in the way of the deal's completion.

Neither club have so far disclosed the sum involved in the transfer, but it is believed Fabregas will cost Barcelona a fee in the region of €40 million plus over €5m in add-ons.

"We have been clear that we didn't want Cesc to leave and that remains the case," Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger told the club's website.

"However, we understand Cesc's desire to move to his hometown club and have now accepted an offer from Barcelona. We thank Cesc for his contribution at Arsenal and wish him future success."

Barcelona have confirmed through their official Twitter account this same information, with director of sport Andoni Zubizarreta stating: "We can say that Cesc is already coming here."

Fabregas' transfer to Camp Nou puts an end to an eight-year spell at Arsenal, after he joined the north London outfit from the Catalan giants at the age of 16.

The Spain international, who was named as Arsenal captain in 2008, made 303 appearances for the Gunners, netting 57 times.
