Official: FC Lugano capture Omar Milanetto from Genoa

Bosses at the Serie A club had tried to convince former fan favourite to stay, but the 35-year-old has opted to join the Swiss second division outfit on a one-year contract
Swiss second division club FC Lugano have confirmed the signing of midfielder Omar Milanetto from Genoa on a one-year contract.

The 35-year-old had an tumultuous relationship with fans at the Serie A side. He had been a very popular figure, but his rapport was damaged when he insulted spectators during the derby match against cross-city rivals Sampdoria last season.

That incident resulted in graffiti appearing outside the club's training ground urging Milanetto to leave.

Club boss Alberto Malesani hoped he would stay, but the Italian chose to move on, after making 123 appearances for Genoa since arriving from Brescia in 2006.
