Villarreal president Fernando Roig has hinted that Barcelona did not sign Giuseppe Rossi as they were unwilling to meet the striker's release clause.
The Italy international was strongly tipped to join Barcelona, but the striker's €40m release made the transfer impossible and the Blaugrana have seemingly turned to other targets, including Udinese's Alexis Sanchez.
The striker's agent, Federico Pastorello, revealed on Thursday the deal had gone up in smoke, and the Villarreal supremo has now explained it never went beyond preliminary talks.
"There is nothing concrete, there never was. There were conversations with a team, but they said they were short on cash and if you are short on cash, there is nothing," Roig is quoted as saying by AS.
"There was never a serious offer."
Roig stressed that Rossi, who has been at Villarreal since 2007, is 'delighted' with the fact he still has two years to run on his contract.
