Cagliari have announced they will not exercise their buying option over striker Robert Acquafresca and midfielders Simone Missiroli and Simon Laner.
The Italian trio will now return to their respective clubs after playing at Cagliari on loan last season.
This decision comes as a huge blow to the players, especially Acquafresca, who turned down better offers to return to Cagliari, where he had spent two years.
Acquafresca will make his way back to Genoa, while Missiroli and Laner have been told to return to Reggina and AlbinoLeffe, respectively.
Meanwhile, reports in Italy suggest Cagliari and Milan have been locked in talks to swap goalkeepers, which would see Federico Marchetti join the Serie A champions, while Marco Amelia would move in the opposite direction.
