Newcastle United Accept Club Record Bid From Liverpool For Andy Carroll

Striker hands in transfer request
Liverpool have confirmed that Newcastle United have accepted a club record offer for the transfer of the England international striker Andy Carroll.

Liverpool have been given permission by Newcastle to discuss personal terms with the player, who has also handed in a transfer request at St James' Park, and the striker – who is carrying a thigh injury – is scheduled to undergo a medical as soon as he arrives on Merseyside.

Carroll, 22, has scored 11 goals so far this season, his first full season as a Premier League striker.

He made his England debut in November against France and has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham in recent weeks, with the transfer to Liverpool coming as much of a surprise as Fernando Torres' seeming departure to Chelsea.

If the reported £35 million deal is completed, it will eclipse the current British transfer record set by Manchester City when they signed Robinho from Real Madrid in 2008; however, Chelsea will smash that record by signing Torres for as much as £50m.
