Milan's emphasis for a midfielder has led them towards Sampdoria's Andrea Poli and Angelo Palombo.
Coach Massimiliano Allegri made clear an extra man to bridge the divide in his midfield was needed, and he is looking at players who can cover for Andrea Pirlo and Gennaro Gattuso.
And Gazzetta dello Sport believes Adriano Galliani is prepared to spend up to €15 million for Poli, an Italian under-21 international with great potential.
The other candidate is Palombo, and Sampdoria expect around €10m for his services.
But the Rossoneri will have to wait to discover who they can move for as neither of the players would be eligible to play for Milan in the Champions League if they turn out for the Blucerchiati in the preliminaries of the same competition next month.
The search is wide-ranging, though, should the Sampdoria approach fail. Tuttosport claims Manuele Blasi, Antonio Candreva, Andrea Lazzarri of Cagliari and Mahamadou Diarra of Real Madrid are all on Allegri's list.
