Pirlo handed Italy recall

The veteran retired from international football in June but reversed his decision following the appointment of Antonio Conte

Andrea Pirlo has been recalled to the Italy squad for their Euro 2016 qualifiers against Azerbaijan and Malta following an injury to Giacomo Bonaventura.

The 35-year-old was not named in the original selection but returns in place of the AC Milan midfielder, who was forced to leave the Azzurri's training camp after picking up a thigh problem.

The Juventus veteran announced his international retirement in June on the back of Italy's World Cup group stage exit but changed his mind after Antonio Conte replaced Cesare Prandelli.

A statement on the Italian FA's official website read: "Coach Antonio Conte has called up Juventus midfielder Andrea Pirlo, who makes his return to the national team three months after his last appearance in blue in the World Cup. He will reach the Coverciano training centre in the evening."

Pirlo has won 112 caps for Italy, scoring 13 goals.
