Official: Inter release Nelson Rivas

Inter have decided to release to release centre-back Nelson Rivas on a free transfer with immediate effect.

The Colombian defender was no longer needed at Giuseppe Meazza and is now free to sign with a new club.

"Inter and Nelson Enrique Rivas have agreed to terminate the player's contract, which was due to expire on 30 June 2012. The necessary paperwork was sent to the Lega Serie A offices this morning," a statement on the club's official website reads.

The 28-year-old joined Inter from River Plate in the summer of 2007, but never really managed to live up to expectations in Serie A.

Rivas made 28 official appearances for Inter during his spell in Italy. He also wore the jerseys of Livorno and Dnipro on loan while under contract with the 2010 Champions League winners.
