AC Milan's Mathieu Flamini out for at least five months with knee ligament injury

French midfielder told he will miss most of the campaign following last week's injury against Juventus
AC Milan's Mathieu Flamini will miss the first five months of Serie A, and all of the Champions League group stages after suffering an injury to the cruciate ligament of his left knee.

The club's official website said Flamini, 27, was in France to undergo scans after injuring his knee in the Trofeo Berlusconi friendly against Juventus last week.

And it has been revealed the extent of the injury means he will miss at least five months of the new term.

It's not good news for coach Massimiliano Allegri as he will be without the experienced midfielder for their European run.

It is unknown whether the San Siro-based club will attempt to sign a replacement before the end of the summer transfer window next week, having completed a deal to bring in Alberto Aquilani on loan earlier on Friday.
