Negotiations between Napoli and Groningen for the transfer of striker Tim Matavz have been scuppered, the Dutch side confirmed on Friday.
Matavz, 22, who scored 16 goals in 30 games this season, was in talks with the Azzurri and they appeared to have agreed personal terms over a summer move to Serie A.
However, the Dutch side have said talks broke down between the player and the Italian club, and Matavz will ultimately remain in the Netherlands.
A statement on Groningen's official website explained they had reached a deal with Napoli, but it seems things came unstuck in talks between the striker and the Italians, leaving him to make a U-turn.
Director Hans Nijland said: "Matavz feels like he no longer wants to join Napoli because they did not reach an accord. He will remain with us for the 2011-12 season."
The Slovenian international's deal expires in 2013.
