Genoa 1-1 AC Milan: Pato Goal Not Enough As Gap Closes At The Top Of The Table

Honours even at the Luigi Ferraris, allowing Napoli to pull within three points of the Rossoneri
Genoa were able to hold on for a draw with AC Milan, keeping them safe from relegation for the meantime, while Napoli were able to close the gap at the top of the table, after taking all three points against Cesena.

Pato took the lead for the Rossoneri, but Antonio Floro Flores was on hand to deliver an equaliser just before half-time.

The Griffone were forced into an early switch, as Mattia Destro picked up an injury and Rodrigo Palacio came on to take his place.

Milan were in control of the game, but looked somewhat tentative in the early minutes of the game.

They caught their break in the 29th minute however, after a mistake from Dainelli allowed Pato to finish coolly into the middle of the net.

Some resolute defending, and a contentious offside decision denied Milan the opportunity to take a 2-0 lead into half time.

The Griffone were able to draw level just before half-time, after a killer through ball from Abdoulay Konko found Antonio Floro Flores in the centre of the box, and the Italian forward made no mistake in placing the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

The brighter side at the start of the second half was definitely Milan, who took control of the game and came close on a few occasions, with chances falling to Flamini and Robinho, but they ran into resolute defending again.

Ibrahimovic got the best chance of the second half, after a header from Bonera in the 69th minute found him on the right hand side of the six yard box, but the ball was just too high, even for the 6'5 Swede.

Genoa continued to hang on, and deny the Rossoneri a chance to win the game, giving away a close range free kick in the 82nd minute which was put straight into the wall by Ibrahimovic.

Despite Milan's unrelenting attack, they were unable to score the winning goal, and the match finished 1-1.

Milan will be aware of the consequences of this draw, as a loss to Parma next weekend would allow second-placed Napoli to draw level on points. Genoa will be delighted with the draw however, as Milan were heavy favourites heading into the game, and this extra point sees them remain a safe six points from the relegation zone.
