Italian outfit Udinese have completed the transfer of Swedish defender Joel Ekstrand from Helsingborg for an undisclosed fee. The 21-year-old defender has signed a contract until the summer of 2015 with his new club.
Ekstrand is a product of the Lund youth academy, but moved to Helsingborg before making his professional debut with Lund. The centre-back had developed into a key player at Helsingborg in the past couple of seasons.
"It feels sad to leave the club that I love, but incredibly inspiring to get the chance to play in one of Europe's best leagues," commented the young defender on his transfer to Italy.
Helsingborg sporting director Jesper Jansson was equally pleased with the move.
"Our sale of Joel will be counted among the best transfers that Helsingborg have been involved in over the last decade. Probably no central defender from Sweden has been sold at this price in recent years."
Ekstrand has so far represented Sweden at senior level once.
