Inter Midfielder Dejan Stankovic Aims To Repeat Historic Treble

The experienced midfielder believes they have the confidence and ability to succeed on three fronts once more...
Inter midfielder Dejan Stankovic is aiming to make history by putting the Nerazzurri's name in the European record books as the first side to defend the Champions League, whilst repeating domestic dominance this season.

As the Beneamata prepare for their opening European fixture on Tuesday against first-timers FC Twente, Inter hope to take the influence of former coach Jose Mourinho - now at Real Madrid - into the match after a disappointing start to the season.

Stankovic believes that Mourinho built a confidence and drive that had been lacking in previous European campaigns.

"He [Mourinho] really is the 'Special One', even when you are dead on your feet he gets you to give 130 percent. He was on the bench but it felt like he was on the pitch," Stankovic told Supersport.

New boss Rafa Benitez will hope to install a similar belief, something the Spaniard managed to accomplish in European competition during his time with both Valencia and Liverpool.

"Benitez is hungry for success and we have to accept his way of working. We are on the right track but just like Mourinho in Madrid, he needs time," Stankovic continued.

"We're a great team and we have to be aiming for another treble. It is important to win when you're not playing well which is what happened against Udinese [2-1]."

Stankovic is currently a major doubt to make the trip to Holland along with Thiago Motta is has already been ruled out.
