Marco Materazzi has just signed a contract extension to stay at Inter until 2012 and is fired up ahead of the new season, ready for the Nerazzurri to finally break their European curse, although he did confess that their Serie A crown will be tough to retain.
“We could have knocked out Manchester United [from the Champions League last season] and we should pick up from there, because we could have won the Champions League last term," Materazzi stated in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“We just have to think that any acquisition can improve Inter, and that’s good for everyone involved.”
Inter have brought in South American trio Diego Milito, Thiago Motta and Lucio so far, but Juventus have also splashed out by signing Diego, Felipe Melo and Fabio Cannavaro.
“Yes, this time they can comfortably say that the gap is gone,” admitted the 35-year-old.
“Last year, their proclamations made us smile, but not anymore. They have captured three real players: we will have to fight and it will be hot.”
