Thiago Motta: I’ve Joined Inter To Win The Champions League

Thiago Motta joined Inter earlier this month in the wake of a superb season at Genoa, where he revamped his career after a few darks years, and he is now aiming for the very pinnacle of the club game.

The 26-year-old cannot wait to get started at the Stadio San Siro as he wants to challenge European champions Barcelona, his former club, on the European stage.

“It’s true, I want to win the Champions League again and that’s why I found the strength to leave Genoa,” Motta confessed to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I loved it in Genoa, but I had set myself a target and I had to try and pursue it. I was honest. When I met with [Genoa president Enrico] Preziosi and he was perplexed, I told him, ‘Give me a chance and you’ll see that great clubs will be after me next year.’”

Barcelona triumphed in the Champions League last season, but Motta is confident that the Nerazzurri can go all the way next term, despite rumours surrounding the future of star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Brazilian wing-back Maicon.

“Barcelona are step ahead of the pack, but we are ready to give it a shot,” said the midfielder.

“'Ibra' is among the top three footballers in the world and Maicon is the No. 1 in his role. They have to stay, but only if they are happy to do so. You can’t play football without a smile on your face.”
