Italian international goalkeeper Federico Marchetti will remain at Cagliari next season after the Sardinians finally exercised their right to sign him from Serie B side Albinoleffe in a co-ownership deal, a note on the club’s official website has confirmed.
Today is the last day to resolve co-ownership deals for Italian clubs and Cagliari have duly moved to honour last summer’s commitment to keep hold of the sought-after net-minder.
Marchetti is tipped to follow in the footsteps of Juventus and Italy star Gianluigi Buffon and several clubs had showed interest in his services this summer.
But president Massimo Cellino insisted the 26-year-old was not going anywhere and has now agreed to pay a €2 million fee for a 50 per cent share of the goalkeeper’s rights.
Press reports earlier this week suggest that Milan have already reached a preliminary agreement with Cagliari to take Marchetti to the San Siro next summer.
