Marco Tronchetti Provera: Inter Fans Should Applaud Zlatan Ibrahimovic

The Beneamata board member thinks that jeering ‘Ibra’ was wrong and hopes the striker will stay put this summer.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic caused a major controversy on Saturday night as he reacted to boos from a section of Inter fans by making an obscene gesture during a 2-0 win over Lazio.

President Massimo Moratti and coach Jose Mourinho have thrown their support behind the Swedish star, however, there is growing speculation that the ex-Ajax man wants out and will make his desire known once the season reaches its conclusion.

“Mourinho is right in defending Ibrahimovic as he is a great champion,” Nerazzurri board member Marco Tronchetti Provera told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“When someone plays like him, the fans can only applaud. However, I would not even call this a controversy. I obviously hope to see Inter with ‘Ibra’ next season.”

The Beneamata have all but secured their fourth straight Serie A title with Saturday’s win. They have a seven-point lead over Milan with just four games left, but the Pirelli president is still cautious.

“It will only be over when mathematics say so,” he noted. “We did move a step forward and we have a very comfortable advantage. But we are not thinking about celebrating as yet.”
