Milan's Abbiati: I Don't Want To Be Third Choice For Italy

The ex-Torino goalkeeper would not like to be part of the national team unless he has a role to play on the pitch...
Christian Abbiati returned to Milan this summer after a series of loan spells and has reclaimed his spot as the side's number one goalkeeper, enjoying a successful season.

The 31-year-old has started all 27 Serie A matches for the Rossoneri during the 2008-09 campaign, keeping 11 clean sheets in the process. This form has people calling for his inclusion in the national team once again. However, Abbiati is reluctant, knowing he will likely not be the first choice goalkeeper.

"If I were to go on retreat for ten days with the national team and end up on the bench, then I would prefer to keep working with Milan instead," he was quoted as saying by Mediaset.

"I'm happy with how my season is progressing. It is a sort of revenge, but I remain grounded."

Italy coach Marcello Lippi has constantly overlooked the player, instead preferring Gianluigi Buffon, Marco Amelia, Gianluca Curci, and Morgan De Sanctis in his squad.

Despite Abbiati's heroics this season, coach Carlo Ancelotti's side remain third place in Serie A, 12 points behind league-leaders and city rivals Inter.
