Genoa confirm signing of Groningen's Andreas Granqvist

The 26-year-old defender joins the Italian club for an undisclosed fee and will join up with his new team in mid-July
Genoa have announced the signing of Groningen defender Andreas Granqvist, who will move to the Italian side for an undisclosed fee.

The Swedish international right back signed for the Dutch side in July 2008, and has played almost 100 games in the Eredivisie. He has been linked with a number of European clubs lately, but Alberto Malesani's side have won the race for the 26-year-old's signature.

"After completion of the medical and the formalities upon his arrival in Liguria, [Granqvist] will return to Genoa in mid-July to begin pre-season," a statement on the club's official website reveals.

The former Helsingborg man has proven his ability to get goals from his defensive role this season, netting 11 times in 36 games for Pieter Huistra's side in 2010-11.

It has been a busy day in the transfer market for the side from the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, who are reported to have also completed the purchase of Alexander Merkel from Milan, on a co-ownership deal.
