Wolverhampton Wanderers v Arsenal Live Commentary, 10/02/2022

0 - 1
Gabriel Magalhães (25)
Molineux Stadium

Arsenal pick up their first win of 2022, then, leaving Wolves to ponder their paucity of goals. When the European places are decided come the end of the season, we'll see how influential this match proves to be. That's all for now. Goodbye!
Arsenal were second best in the second half, mounting just three shots to Wolves' 10. It's to their credit that they managed to hold out for the win after going down to 10 men, even if they did dabble in the dark arts to do so. They rise to fifth in the Premier League table, one point behind West Ham United in fourth with two games in hand. Wolves stay eighth, down but not out of the European hunt.
Gabriel's first-half goal gets Arsenal's Champions League quest back on track! Arteta's men fought hard for the victory and were helped by a confident goalkeeping display by Ramsdale. Martinelli's ridiculous red card put the Gunners under unnecessary pressure, but Wolves couldn't muster enough to beat the Arsenal keeper.
90' + 5' Wolves will get one last chance as they force another corner down their right. Sa comes forward for it! Arsenal clear the ball in, and that's it!
90' + 3' Jimenez scissor-kicks off-target as Chiquinho's cross finds him at the far post. It's a bold attempt by the Mexican, but not what Wolves need right now.
90' + 2' The Wolves fans boo as Gabriel positions himself well to hold off Podence, putting the ball out for a throw-in. Gabriel goes down for a few seconds, but the home crowd are not sympathetic.
90' Molineux roars as five minutes of added time are announced! Wolves will be buoyed by that, especially as most of it has been incurred by Arsenal.
89' Ramsdale drops low to claim a rogue throughball with Chiquinho lurking. He's been Arsenal's man of the match, without question.
88' Silva attracts the wrath of the assistant's flag as he challenges Gabriel for the ball in. That'll give Arsenal a breather after enduring some pressure for the past few minutes.
87' Arsenal are going to have to focus on defending until full-time. Wolves win a free-kick down their left as the visitors fail to carry the ball away.
85' Wolves are not settling for a narrow defeat, that's for sure. Podence floats another cross into Arsenal's box. Dendoncker's lurking there again but this time his header is too high.
83' How did Wolves not score there?! Ramsdale tips Semedo's cross from the byline aside and Silva drags a shot wide. Wolves keep pushing and Chiquinho has a header cleared off the line before Ramsdale tips Dendoncker's own header over the crossbar. Neves goes for goal following the corner and earns Wolves another chance to test Ramsdale.
E. Nketiah
A. Lacazette
81' Arsenal make a change too. Nketiah replaces the hardworking Lacazette up front.
Fábio Silva
C. Coady
Wolverhampton Wanderers
81' Here's that Wolves change. Silva replaces Coady. The hosts are pushing for a goal.
80' Wolves want to bring their young striker Silva on. There's a brief delay as he waits for the referee's attention.
78' Podence's cross is cleared to safety. Arsenal are holding their own at the moment.
76' Ramsdale punches away Semedo's cross from the right. Arsenal's man between the sticks hasn't put a foot wrong yet.
74' Ramsdale saves Saiss' effort from the left of the box, preventing the Moroccan from finding the bottom right corner. Wolves get a corner which Arsenal deal with admirably.
72' Arsenal may be a man down but they're still getting scoring opportunities. Lacazette shoots from the left of the box. His shot bobbles just wide of the right-hand post.
R. Holding
B. Saka
71' Arsenal have to reshuffle now they're down to 10 men. Saka's sacrificed. Holding comes on.
70' Wolves have the ball in the net but their celebrations are shortlived. Jimenez heads in from Ait Nouri's inswinging free-kick, but he's offside.
69' RED CARD FOR MARTINELLI! Well, that changes things! Martinelli gets a second yellow card for committing two fouls in quick succession, the second being to bundle over Chiquinho as he bursts forward from the throw-in. What stupidity by the Brazilian. Arteta shakes his head.
Gabriel Martinelli
Yellow Card
69' Martinelli loses the ball near the touchline and shoves Podence to prevent a quick throw-in. He's unsuccessful. That'll be a booking when the referee gets around to it.
E. Smith Rowe
M. Ødegaard
68' Arsenal make their first change of the match. Smith Rowe, their super sub of late, replaces Odegaard.
67' Chiquinho clumsily crashes into Tierney as he leans towards Neves' pass. Arsenal get a free-kick, to Neves' frustration.
66' Arsenal force a throw-in down their left. The Gunners are managing the game well at the moment. Tierney's delivery is headed away from danger.
64' Chiquinho and Gabriel tussle for the ball near the touchline. In the end Gabriel's awarded a free-kick.
64' Saka receives the ball from Odegaard and shoots from outside the box. It's blocked. Lacazette gets caught offside as he sniffs around the rebound.
R. Aït Nouri
Fernando Marçal
Wolverhampton Wanderers
63' Marcal's game is also over for Wolves. Ait Nouri replaces him at left wing-back.
Wolverhampton Wanderers
62' Lage decides to freshen things up for Wolves. Trincao heads off first. Their January signing Chiquinho replaces him.
Gabriel Magalhães
Yellow Card
61' Gabriel lands his name in the book for wasting time over the free-kick. This game's simmering at the moment but it's threatening to boil over.
Rúben Neves
Yellow Card
Wolverhampton Wanderers
60' Neves sticks a foot out to rob Lacazette and ends up taking the Frenchman out. It's a late challenge but nothing worse than that. The yellow card he gets is about right.
58' Arsenal take the corner short. Gabriel keeps Martinelli's ball across alive and Partey's clipped shot loops safely towards Sa. The offside flag goes up against Lacazette as he goes for it anyway. Sa appeals to the referee as Lacazette prevents him from playing on quickly.
57' Now it's Arsenal's turn to earn a corner. Arteta applauds his team from the touchline.
55' Arsenal can't escape their own half at the moment as Saka gives a foul away. Podence is too eager to get the ball forward for Jimenez and has to watch his cross roll harmlessly out of play.
53' Gabriel is in the right place again to block Trincao's left-footed foray into the box. Wolves keep coming though. Podence clatters the ball against White and accepts a corner. Wolves take it quickly to cross in second time and Dendoncker heads high and wide.
51' Neves' hopeful ball in is punted away from danger by Gabriel. Podence's effort from range is even more pie-in-the-sky, flying way over Ramsdale's crossbar.
49' Arsenal are still looking threatening. Lacazette receives the ball in the box. He tries to hit it on the turn and gets closed down. The Frenchman hits the turf but the referee waves at him to get up.
49' Saiss picks out Podence in space and Wolves' left winger flings a cross towards Jimenez. Ramsdale reaches up to grab the ball. It's been a confident display by the Arsenal keeper so far.
47' Ramsdale is quick off his line to hoof clear as Jimenez races after a teasing throughball. Wolves are playing with greater urgency already.
45' Arsenal get the second half started. Neither they nor Wolves have made changes at half-time.
Arsenal had six shots in Wolves' box in the first half. While most of them were blocked by Wolves defenders, Lage may think his team are giving up chances too easily. Wolves will need to focus more on attacking in the second half. Of course, that risks leaving them more open to an Arsenal attack down the flanks.
Arsenal go in at the break the happier side thanks to Gabriel's simple finish. The Gunners have shown greater incision in the opening 45 minutes, but Wolves haven't played that badly. The hosts have had a few decent chances, most notably Jimenez's header straight at Ramsdale and Semedo's sizzler which bounced wide.
45' + 3' Lage yells his dissatisfaction as Soares brings down Podence. Wolves get another free-kick. Again, Arsenal aren't troubled by Neves' ball in. That's all for now.
G. Xhaka
Yellow Card
45' + 2' Xhaka misjudges the bounce of the ball and shoves Trincao to the turf after losing out to the Wolves winger. The Swiss international gets a yellow card.
45' + 2' Neves goes straight for goal from the free-kick which is on the edge of the box. The Portuguese midfielder's delivery is off-target and doesn't worry Ramsdale.
45' Partey's shot from outside the box. Gabriel goes for goal from even further out and gets it all wrong, firing way over the crossbar. There'll be three minutes added onto the end of this first half.
43' The game's livening up as we approach half-time. Saka plays a nice one-two with Odegaard to fizz a low cross into the box. Lacazette shoots first-time into the arms of Sa.
42' Wolves clear the corner, blocking Lacazette's header, and come close to an equaliser! Semedo takes the ball down just outside the box, checks onto his left foot and lashes a powerful effort wide of the right-hand post.
41' Odegaard rolls the ball out wide to the arriving Soares. Marcal blocks the cross to give away a corner and cause himself some further discomfort. The Brazilian soldiers on for now.
39' Marcal lands awkwardly after an aerial challenge and gets treated by the physios. The Wolves wing-back is soon back to his feet.
37' Wolves are starting to warm up in an attacking sense. Jimenez gets on the end of Semedo's cross from the right and powers a header straight at Ramsdale. The Arsenal goalkeeper is well-placed to catch it.
R. Saïss
Yellow Card
Wolverhampton Wanderers
36' Saiss slides in late on Odegaard and gets a yellow card for it. The Norwegian is unimpressed by the challenge.
34' Podence's attempted cross sails over everyone in old gold and is headed away. Wolves bombard Arsenal aerially a bit more and get a throw-in. Jimenez can't get a free run at goal and Ramsdale nicks the ball from him.
T. Partey
Yellow Card
33' Partey receives the game's first yellow card for bundling over Trincao while the Wolves winger is on the run.
31' Podence swings the corner in. Gabriel clears it with a fine header. Marcal's switch of play fails, giving Arsenal an unforced throw-in.
30' Jimenez and Trincao combine to earn a corner for Wolves down their left. Podence comes over to take it.
29' Martinelli skips inside and looks to find the head of Lacazette with a dinked cross. Wolves anticipate the ball in and get to it first.
27' Wolves get the game restarted, earning a quick free-kick in Arsenal's half. Arsenal scoring might liven the game up a bit.
A. Lacazette
25' Lacazette didn't know much about that assist as he was properly clattered by Sa. That might have been a penalty had Gabriel not scored. Before play resumes, Coady has picked up a bloody nose so he gets some cotton wool bunged up his nostril.
Gabriel Magalhães
25' GOAL! WOLVES 0-1 ARSENAL! Arsenal have broken Wolves' early resistance! The hosts lose the first header from the corner and White nods it back into the six-yard box. Lacazette gets to it first, getting taken out by Sa in the process, and Gabriel prods into the empty net.
24' Lacazette isn't far from getting his head to Soares' cross from the right. Arsenal keep the pressure on and earn their second corner of the match.
23' Ramsdale saves Jimenez's speculative shot from more than 40 yards out. Arsenal give the ball away and Wolves counter. Podence fires in a low cross from the left that's intercepted by Partey.
22' Saiss trips Lacazette as the Frenchman chases after a loose ball down the right. Arsenal take the free-kick short. Sa punches Tierney's deep cross away, but not fully! White and Gabriel both have shots blocked in the box.
20' Coady tangles with Lacazette near the halfway line, tenderly cupping the Arsenal captain's head as a free-kick is given against him.
18' A Wolves cross finds its way easily into Ramsdale's arms. The hosts try to test Arsenal again and Semedo dinks the ball forward for Trincao, only for him to be seen off by Gabriel.
16' It's safe to say this game hasn't caught alight yet. Arsenal manage to clear Marcel's blocked shot and Martinelli darts through the middle. The Brazilian's got little support though and Wolves soon crowd him out.
13' White's penalised for scything down Podence in the centre of the pitch. Ramsdale confidently claims Neves' floated free-kick into Arsenal's box.
12' Wolves keep hold of the ball for a while. Trincao races after a pass down the right but is unable to keep it in play.
10' Wolves attempt to harry Arsenal's defenders. The visitors are comfortable playing out from the back, though, and venture forward untroubled.
8' Wolves threaten Arsenal for the first time in the game. Neves drops a nice deep ball towards Jimenez in the box. Partey sticks a leg out in time to cut it out and divert it safely to Ramsdale.
7' Partey goes for goal as the ball rebounds to him from a long Arsenal throw-in. The Ghanaian's shot is blocked by Wolves' compact backline.
6' Kilman cannily stops an Arsenal counter-attack by body-checking Martinelli. The referee lets the Wolves defender off this time, giving a free-kick and nothing more.
5' Partey tries to free Saka down the right with a pinged crossfield pass. It's too far ahead of the England winger, though.
3' Arsenal force Kilman into conceding an early corner down their left. Wolves manage to deal with it without much fuss.
1' We're underway here in Wolverhampton! Wolves are wearing their famous old gold and black home kit. Arsenal are wearing their lightning blue third kit.
Wolves have won two of their last three Premier League games against Arsenal at Molineux, winning 2-1 here last season. However, the Gunners have scored in each of their last 27 games against Wolves in all competitions and haven't lost back-to-back away league matches against the West Midlands side since February 1975. Arsenal will be hopeful of breaking their goalscoring duck here.
Arsenal make three changes to their team having drawn a blank against Burnley last time out. Soares, Xhaka and Partey come in. Holding, Lokonga and Smith Rowe all drop to the bench.
There are five changes to Wolves from their 1-0 defeat to Norwich City here in the FA Cup last week. Sa, Saiss, Marcal, Trincao and Jimenez all come into the starting 11.

Arsenal sit two points and two places above Wolves, but are yet to win in this calendar year. Mikel Arteta's Gunners have failed to score in their last four games in all competitions, last going five in a row without a goal in March 1990 under George Graham. With Premier League games involving Wolves seeing the fewest shots so far this season, Arsenal's barren run could be set to continue.
Wolves return to Premier League action in the thick of an unexpected tilt at the European places. Bruno Lage's defensively solid side have won their first three league games of 2022 and are now looking to win four consecutive top-flight matches for the first time since January 1972.
