Commentary

That's all for now though, goodbye!
The result means that Tottenham climb to sixth, while Southampton remain in 14th.
Tottenham snatch a late win through Son's penalty! After a chaotic few days following the upheaval of the European Super League, Tottenham respond with a hectic victory. Southampton dominated the first half and duly took the lead when Ings glanced in Ward-Prowse's corner. However, once Ings was substituted in the second period, Tottenham grew into the game. They equalised through Bale's curling finish before Son had a neat strike ruled out after a check with VAR. The hosts weren't to be denied though, and when VAR awarded them a late penalty following Djenepo's foul, Son stepped up to grab all three points with a confident spot-kick.
90' + 6' FULL TIME: Tottenham 2-1 Southampton
E. Dier
Yellow Card
90' + 5' Dier is shown a yellow card for timewasting.
90' + 4' Son showed plenty of nerve to score that penalty. This has been a huge game for Tottenham after a chaotic few days and he may well have grabbed his side a late winner!
90' + 2' Six minutes of stoppage time are added on.
Son Heung-Min
Penalty Goal
90' SON SCORES! 2-1! Son steps up confidently and hits the penalty into the right corner, with McCarthy going the wrong way!
87' Penalty to Tottenham! Djenepo makes a late challenge on the edge of the box on Reguilon and the referee initially awards a free-kick, however, a VAR check concludes that the foul was inside the box and a penalty is awarded!
M. Djenepo
Yellow Card
86' Djenepo is booked after a reckless challenge on Reguilon right on the edge of the box.
85' Ward-Prowse clips a free-kick into the box from near the centre-circle, but Lloris sails out to gather it.
N. Redmond
N. Tella
84' Tella makes way for Redmond.
S. Bergwijn
G. Bale
83' Bale is replaced Bergwijn in attack.
83' Hojbjerg's deep cross is easily claimed by McCarthy.
81' Southampton will be relieved that VAR ruled out that potential winner for Tottenham, but the hosts are beginning to pile the pressure on and you wouldn't be surprised if the visitors buckled again.
E. Lamela
G. Lo Celso
79' Lo Celso departs for Lamela as Tottenham continue to chase an equaliser.
77' Lucas knocks Bale's cross well wide. Son was the original target for the cross, but Lucas awkwardly stretched to make contact despite having little chance of scoring.
75' Tottenham have a goal disallowed by VAR! Reguilon squares a neat cross into Son, who rolls an accurate finish into the bottom corner from eight yards! However, Lucas was in an offside position that obscured McCarthy's vision and VAR decides to rule out the goal!
H. Winks
T. Ndombèlé
73' Ndombele is replaced in midfield by Winks.
70' A Southampton counter-attack falls apart at the crucial moment, as Tella's cross is too powerful for Adams.
68' Almost a second for Bale! Reguilon lunges in to poke a scrappy pass across goal and it almost trickles towards Bale at the back post, but Salisu gets in front of him to clear!
M. Djenepo
T. Walcott
67' Walcott is replaced by Djenepo on the right flank for Southampton.
66' After producing five shots from inside the box in the first half, Southampton have yet to muster one since the interval. They'll need to rediscover some energy in attack - without a leader in Ings - to come away with all three points today.
64' Son attempts to jink his way past Vestergaard to get through on goal, but Salisu comes across to help crowd him out and the visitors clear.
62' Well, Tottenham have the equaliser they needed! Southampton have shown plenty of adventure today though and this game is poised for a hectic final 30 minutes!
G. Bale
Goal
60' BALE! 1-1! Son slips a clever pass into Lucas inside the box and although his shot is blocked by Vestergaard, it falls to Bale who curls an accurate finish from eight yards into the far corner!
59' Tottenham have yet to worry the visitors since half time, and Southampton still look comfortable with their lead.
I. Diallo
D. Ings
57' Ings is replaced by Diallo after picking up what looked like a minor knock.
57' Ings hits a tame effort from distance straight at Lloris.
56' Ndombele clips a hopeful pass over the top towards Aurier just as he halts his run forwards, allowing Southampton to regroup with a goal kick.
54' Bale cuts inside from the right and lashes a swerving effort from 30 yards that McCarthy does well to hold onto at the first attempt.
51' Son latches onto a lay-off from Bale, but his powerful effort from the edge of the box is blocked by Bednarek.
49' The game's paused for Lucas to receive treatment, but the attacker should be able to continue.
48' Lo Celso looked like Tottenham's brightest spark in a difficult first half and you'd suspect that they'll need a big performance from him to turn this around - the midfielder produced two shots and a key pass in the first period.
46' Tottenham get the second half underway.
Tottenham lacked an attacking presence inside the box in that half and you wonder how long it'll be before Vinicius emerges from the bench.
Southampton lead 1-0 at half time! The visitors have been excellent in the first half and are good value for their lead. Lloris was forced into a string of impressive saves early on, and Southampton eventually took the lead when Ings glanced in a neat header from Ward-Prowse's corner. Tottenham laboured in attack throughout, but showed promising flashes just before half time when Lucas wastefully blazed over following Son's cutback. Nevertheless, it'll take a much-improved performance in the second 45 to turn this game around.
45' + 2' HALF TIME: Tottenham 0-1 Southampton
45' + 1' Chance! Son squares Aurier's cross into Lucas, who lifts his volley well over the bar from close range!
45' Bale's corner bounces inside the six-yard box, but Bednarek reacts first to hack it away.
T. Ndombèlé
Yellow Card
43' Ndombele is booked after a cynical trip on Adams near the halfway line.
42' Son's deep free-kick is headed clear by Adams.
40' Armstrong collides with Son just outside the box, presenting Tottenham with a promising free-kick opportunity. Dier steps up and tamely places it straight into the wall.
38' Walcott's 20-yard shot flicks off Alderweireld and away for a corner that amounts to nothing.
36' Tottenham have looked lost without Kane so far. Their attack has no focal point, and they're frequently wasting possession once they enter the final third.
34' Reguilon misplaces a throughball aiming for Son, as Southampton continue to frustrate the hosts.
32' Well, Southampton have a deserved lead! The visitors have looked threatening throughout the first half and they've made their advantage count through a well-worked corner.
J. Ward-Prowse
Assist
30' It was a brilliant delivery from Ward-Prowse; it provided Ings with all the pace he needed to simply steer his header beyond Lloris and in!
D. Ings
Goal
30' INGS! 1-0! Southampton take the lead! Ward-Prowse whips in an inviting corner towards the near post, where Ings is on hand to glance a clever header that clips the far post before bouncing into the net!
28' Tottenham attempt a short routine from a corner, but Tella anticipates the move and instantly clears it away.
26' Ward-Prowse spins a corner above Lloris, but the goalkeeper is judged to have been fouled by Salisu and Tottenham are awarded a free-kick.
24' Reguilon's dangerous low cross flashes through the six-yard box and away to safety.
23' Despite having had just 38 per cent possession, Southampton have had plenty of joy going forwards so far - they've already managed six shots within the opening 20 minutes.
21' Southampton push forward again as Ings holds it up for Armstrong, but the midfielder's 25-yard shot loops harmlessly over the bar.
19' Tottenham have looked vulnerable at the back a few times so far, and they'll need to tighten up if they're to secure a morale-boosting win today.
17' Lo Celso's fierce 18-yard drive is blocked away by Vestergaard.
15' Another save from Lloris! Salisu picks out the run of Walker-Peters with a long diagonal pass and the defender finds himself through on goal! However, Lloris rushes off his line and smothers the defender's shot!
13' Lucas' speculative strike from 25 yards bobbles well wide of the far post.
11' Close! Bale capitalises on a poor touch from Salisu to run in behind the defence, before laying it off to Lo Celso, who curls a deft effort narrowly wide of the far post from 10 yards!
9' Bale drives at the defence and picks out the run of Lo Celso, but Salisu is alert and gets across to knock it away for a throw-in.
7' Southampton continue to dominate possession as they adventurously take the game to the hosts.
5' Tottenham clear two corners in quick succession as they try and absorb early Southampton pressure.
3' Brilliant save from Lloris! Tella's cross is met by Salisu who plants a firm header from close range that ricochets off Lloris and into the path of Adams, who has his follow-up strike brilliantly blocked away by the scrambling goalkeeper! Southampton will be wondering how they're not leading!
1' Southampton get the first half underway.
The players are emerging from the tunnel and kick off is just seconds away!
Today represents an excellent chance for Tottenham to boost themselves following Mourinho’s departure. Southampton have picked up just 10 points from 15 Premier League games in 2021 (W3 D1 L11), fewer than any other side since the turn of the year.
Southampton make four changes to the side that lost to Leicester: Ryan Bertrand, Diallo, Djenepo and Redmond are replaced by Salisu, Tella, Walcott and Adams.
Tottenham make three changes as they switch from a 3-4-1-2 into a 4-3-3 formation. The main story is that talismanic striker Harry Kane is ruled out with injury, but Rodon and Sissoko also drop out, with Lo Celso, Bale and Lucas coming in.
SUBS: Alexandre Jankewitz, Ibrahima Diallo, Will Ferry, Fraser Forster, Moussa Djenepo, Nathan Redmond, Takumi Minamino, Jack Stephens, Daniel N'Lundulu.
SOUTHAMPTON (4-4-2): Alex McCarthy; Kyle Walker-Peters, Jan Bednarek, Jannik Vestergaard, Mohammed Salisu; Theo Walcott, James Ward-Prowse, Stuart Armstrong, Nathan Tella; Che Adams, Danny Ings.
SUBS: Dele Alli, Japhet Tanganga, Erik Lamela, Davinson Sanchez, Steven Bergwijn, Carlos Vinicius, Joe Hart, Moussa Sissoko, Harry Winks.
TOTTENHAM (4-3-3): Hugo Lloris; Serge Aurier, Toby Alderweireld, Eric Dier, Sergio Reguilon; Giovani Lo Celso, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Tanguy Ndombele; Gareth Bale, Son Heung-Min, Lucas Moura.
For now the action will return to the pitch, with Tottenham aiming to respond to the negativity and the chaos of the past few days. A win here ahead of the final with City on Sunday would represent a good start to appeasing their fanbase.
The Mourinho sacking was the tip of the iceberg in a monumental week for Spurs. The Portuguese's dismissal came just a day after it was announced the club had signed up as one of 12 members for the controversial European Super League. Just two days later, Tottenham and the other five Premier League teams had withdrawn from the contentious project amid a huge backlash from fans, pundits and players alike.
Southampton, meanwhile, will be searching for a lift today. They’ve lost four of their last six league matches and last time out they were beaten in the FA Cup semi-final by Leicester City.
Hello and welcome to live commentary of this Premier League fixture between Tottenham and Southampton. This will be Ryan Mason’s first game as interim manager of the hosts, after Jose Mourinho was sacked on Monday. They’ll be hoping for a response today before they take on Manchester City in Sunday’s League Cup final.
