Tottenham Hotspur v Norwich City Live Commentary, 04/03/2020

PEN 2 - 3
1 - 1
J. Vertonghen (13)
J. Drmic (78)
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
(FT 1 - 1)

Thanks for sticking with us tonight. It was worth it in the end, goodbye!
Norwich may be relegated this season, but their fans now have a welcome distraction to look forward to. As we told you earlier, it is Derby County or Manchester United for them in the final eight, and they will fancy their chances. Spurs were not good enough tonight, and they can only win the Champions League this season.
Norwich City are through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup for the first time in 28 years after a shocking penalty from Fernandes. Krul guessed the right way and Spurs' wait for a trophy goes on. It all started so well for them when Vertonghen headed them in front, but a lacklustre performance was punished when Drmic levelled with 12 minutes remaining. The match was forced into a shootout and Lamela, Parrott and Fernandes all missed, while Cantwell scored the key third spot-kick for the Canaries.
FULL-TIME - TOTTENHAM 1-1 NORWICH ( Norwich win 3-2 on penalties).
SAVEDDDDD!!!!! Fernandes misses and Norwich are through!
Cantwell goes for height, and that is unstoppable. He clips the roof of the net and Vorm was nowhere near it, 2-3!
SAVE!!!! Parrott uses a straight run-up and Krul makes an easy save.
Stiepermann makes it 2-2 on penalties as he drills the ball home. No chance for Vorm!
Lo Celso gets lucky as he slips but Krul goes the wrong way, and the ball ends up in the back of the net, 2-1!
GREAT FINISH. No signs of nerves from Idah as he fires into the top corner.
Lamela goes for height, and he clips the crossbar, Krul was beaten as well. 1-0!
Amazing reflexes from Vorm as he flies to his left to deny McLean.
Krul guesses the right way but Dier's penalty is too good and he finds the bottom corner.
Dier to take the first penalty in front of the Spurs crowd. Here we go then!
Neither side find a way through in 120 minutes, and both sets of players make their way to the touchline to try and prepare for penalties. All eyes on Krul and Vorm and the former is well known for his heroics in shootouts!
We go to penalties!!!
117' OVER THE BAR! Lo Celso drives towards the edge of the box, and his backheel finds Fernandes. The sub goes with power, and he sees his effort fly past the far post. He did not need to do that, a more straightforward curling shot would have been effective.
116' Farke's men have not looked the same since Buendia went off with an injury. They have not created anything, and they are now playing long balls, probably because they are tired.
114' Spurs win a free-kick but Lamela fails to force Krul into a save and it remains 1-1.
112' Norwich's players are looking tired out there, and they have eight more minutes to hang on.
110' SAVE! Finally, something to smile about in extra-time but Lo Celso is denied by Krul. The midfielder raced into the box and drilled a shot towards the near post. Krul got down to deny him before Aurier blazed the rebound into the stands.
106' We are back underway in north London...
Tottenham are simply not doing enough to change the scoreline, while Norwich seem happy to go to penalties. Krul has just gone down the tunnel, and it looks like he is having to do some stretches to keep warm, that's how little he has had to do in extra-time so far.
103' It has just been confirmed that the winner of this tie will play the winner of Thursday's match between Derby County and Manchester United.
101' Neither side has taken control of the game in extra-time and Spurs' fans are starting to become frustrated again. Parrott has barely seen the ball since coming on, and the home side need to find him and quickly to settle his nerves.
M. Stiepermann
E. Buendía
Norwich City
97' Stiepermann, who has not started a league game since December, replaces the injured Buendia.
97' Buendia goes down with what looks like a muscle injury, and he is going to need to come off.
T. Parrott
D. Alli
Tottenham Hotspur
96' A huge cheer can be heard as Parrott finally gets his chance. He comes on for Alli, who has been very quiet tonight.
96' Aurier takes the Norwich defence on with his pace causing problems, but his shot is blocked by Krul at the near post.
95' Spurs clear the set-piece and will now try to start a counter-attack of their own.
94' McLean's cross causes chaos for the Spurs defence, and Dier does his best to clear. However, he is very fortunate to not score an own goal as he concedes a corner...
91' Alli gets us back underway!
Spurs left it far too late to step it up, and their fans are left frustrated. Mourinho's men should have done so much more tonight, and they are into extra-time after Vorm's error helped Drmic find the back of the net.
90' + 3' Krul comes out of his six-yard box to clear a cross but misses it, but Dier fails to punish him, and it looks like we are going to extra-time.
90' + 2' Tettey makes a hash of his clearance and Norwich concede a corner...
90' Three minutes added on...
A. Tettey
T. Trybull
Norwich City
89' Norwich make another change as Tettey replaces Trybull.
86' OFF THE LINE!!!! How have Spurs not scored???? Suddenly Spurs find their groove and Aurier is played into space with what looks like a simple tap-in. The Ivory Coast international goes for the far corner, but Godfrey flies across the goal to deny him. Outstanding defending!
85' Vertonghen shows great pace, and he wins his team a corner after chasing down a lost cause. That is exactly what Spurs need for the next 10 minutes.
83' Lo Celso goes down in the box after a challenge from Hanley, but the tackle was superb from the Norwich ace, and the match continues.
82' Just a reminder, we do not have replays at this stage of the FA Cup. If we need to, we will sit through extra-time and penalties.
T. Ndombélé
H. Winks
Tottenham Hotspur
81' NDombele, who impressed against RB Leipzig last month, enters the game in place of Winks.
80' Norwich win a corner and Drmic rallies the troops to put Spurs under more pressure. They feel like they can win this!
J. Drmic
Norwich City
78' GOAAAALLLLLL - TOTTENHAM 1-1 NORWICH - Drmic sends the 9,000 travelling fans wild as they level with 12 minutes to go. McLean's shot gives Vorm all sorts of problems and the Dutchman flaps at it, and before he can gather his senses, Drmic is on hand to tap home. GAME ON!
77' Winks gets forward for the first time tonight, and the crowd urge him to shoot. They now regret their decision as he smashes his shot into the stands.
75' Drmic flashes a shot wide of Vorm's goal, but it would not have counted anyway as Aarons was offside. The right-back stepped up too early before playing his pass to Drmic, but the forward got into a good position, and that will give Farke's men a real boost.
G. Hanley
Yellow Card
Norwich City
73' Hanley takes one for the team as he bodychecks Alli near the halfway line. The defender was in huge trouble then until he brought him down.
A. Idah
L. Rupp
Norwich City
72' Striker Idah has less than 20 minutes to impress as he replaces Rupp.
71' Spurs need some fresh legs and ideas, and Lamela could be the answer after stepping off the bench. He is direct, quick and powerful, and Norwich will not have been pleased to see him come on.
O. Skipp
Yellow Card
Tottenham Hotspur
71' Skipp picks up a yellow card after sticking out his right leg to bring down Godfrey. Poor tackle and the card was the right decision.
E. Lamela
Lucas Moura
Tottenham Hotspur
70' Moura goes down with what looks like an injury but his night is already over. The board goes up and he is replaced by Lamela.
K. McLean
M. Vrančić
Norwich City
67' Farke turns to his bench as Vrancic is replaced by McLean.
65' Norwich clear their lines, but the ball falls to Skipp on the edge of the box. The holding midfielder leans back as he strikes it and his effort can only find the stands as a result.
64' Spurs win a free-kick on the edge of the box...
62' Tottenham have progressed to the quarter-finals on nine of the last 10 occasions they’ve reached this stage of the FA Cup. They still lead but they need to do more to guarantee their place in the next round.
58' CLOSE! Vrancic curls a shot towards the top corner with his left foot but his effort lands on the roof of the net. That is a reasonable effort from there.
57' Norwich win a free-kick after Cantwell is brought down on the edge of the box and this is a dangerous situation for the home side.
55' Rupp gathers the ball on the edge of the area, but he sees his shot blocked and it means Vorm makes an easier save.
Gedson Fernandes
S. Bergwijn
Tottenham Hotspur
54' Fernandes becomes the first substitute to enter the game as he replaces Bergwijn.
52' Spurs are still sitting off the Norwich defence, and this is giving the Canaries a platform to build on.
49' CHANCE! Norwich make their way through the middle of Spurs' defence, and Buendia tries to find the top corner with his left foot. His shot is blocked, and the visitors fail to score with their resulting corner.
46' We are back underway!
Lucas and Lo Celso have been Spurs' best players going forward, but Mourinho will want to see more from Alli. The same can be said of Cantwell for Norwich. He has tried to find space, but Norwich's creative players need to step it up a notch in the second half.
Spurs head into the break with a one-nil lead thanks to Vertonghen's header in the 13th minute. Lo Celso, who started with a spring in his step, picked out the Belgian at the far post and his bullet header proved too much for Krul. Both keepers have since made saves and Spurs will feel they should have doubled their advantage. Lucas has gone close, while Lo Celso also missed a glorious opportunity. Rupp and Vrancic have kept Vorm on his toes, and there is every chance we get more goals in the second 45 minutes.
45' + 1' One minute of stoppage time at the end of the first half...
45' SAVE! Trybull puts his team under pressure by playing a pass to Vrancic when he was not unmarked. Lucas nipped in and looked for the top corner, but Krul gets across his net to deny him.
44' Lucas was caught by a stray arm from Cantwell, and while he may have a bust lip, he will continue.
43' Yet again, Buendia finds space, but his shot is blocked quickly. As Norwich try to attack, the referee notices Lucas is down with a facial injury, and he stops the game.
41' As we approach half-time, Spurs fans are showing signs of discontent. The home side started well, but they have not been consistent enough so far, and they need a second goal if they want to keep the fans on side.
39' Norwich are looking to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1991-92. They will need to do more in the final third, but they are showing signs of real promise in the last 10 minutes.
38' BLOCK! Vrancic finds space again and goes for glory, but his right-footed effort is blocked by Dier for a corner.
35' Buendia makes his way into the box but is denied at the near post by Vorm. The former Swansea City goalkeeper then nearly makes a huge error as he spills Rupp's shot. He got lucky as the ball spun back into his hands, but that was a routine save he should have made.
32' Lo Celso finally makes a mistake as he passes the ball into touch for a throw-in. Not bad to say we are more than 30 minutes into the game.
30' Mourinho's men fail to clear their lines on two occasions, but Rupp failed to shoot when he had the chance. The Canaries looked like they were trying to walk the ball home and that eventually allowed Vertonghen to clear downfield from the edge of his own box.
28' Vertonghen gets forward down the left flank, and his cutback was begging for a touch. Nobody in a Spurs shirt was ready, but Godfrey was not to know, and he clears for a corner.
27' Norwich are doing all they can to build out from the back, but they know they can challenge Tottenham. Their first game this season finished 2-2, while they were beaten 2-1 in London just a few weeks ago.
24' Norwich win a free-kick, but Vrancic's cross is poor, and Spurs will take that all night long.
22' Lucas wins a corner after a determined run but Norwich clear the resulting set-piece with ease.
20' Aurier and Lucas have combined well down the right wing on two occasions now, but Norwich have scrambled well to keep the scoreline at 1-0.
18' Another impressive run from Lo Celso sees Norwich put under pressure, but the visitors survive for now. He is growing in confidence each week, and he looks bang up for this tonight. His latest run saw him reach the edge of the Norwich box before Godfrey cleared his cross.
15' Norwich are now struggling to play through midfield, with Mourinho happy to stick three or four players in their way. Norwich are getting plenty of time on the edge of their own box, but they are yet to make much progress.
G. Lo Celso
Tottenham Hotspur
13' Lo Celso gets plenty of praise from his team-mates for that cross and rightly so, that was bang on the money!
J. Vertonghen
Tottenham Hotspur
13' GOAAALLLL!!!!! TOTTENHAM 1-0 NORWICH - Vertonghen gets up at the back post to head his team into the lead. Spurs won a free-kick on the left, and Lo Celso's cross was inch-perfect as he looked for a team-mate. Vertonghen climbed above Lewis and Krul had no chance.
M. Vrančić
Yellow Card
Norwich City
12' Vrancic becomes the first man to be booked after a reckless challenge on halfway.
11' SAVE!!!! Lucas flies through midfield and plays in Lo Celso who looks destined to score. The playmaker tries to curl his shot around Krul, but the keeper gets down to his right to deny him.
7' Less than 10 minutes in and there is a great tempo to the game. Moura is dropping off the defenders and finding plenty of space.
5' Norwich have made a positive start here tonight, and their fans are in good voice. However, neither side has registered a shot on goal.
2' Both teams are wearing their home strips tonight, Tottenham in white and blue and Norwich in yellow and green.
1' We are underway in north London!
The two teams are on the field and we are moments away from kick-off.
Norwich have won just one of their last seven away games against Spurs in all competitions, losing each of the last three in a row including their league game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season.
Mourinho makes three changes to the team that lost to Wolves as Vorm, Vertonghen and Skipp come into the starting XI, while Gazzaniga, Tanganga and Davies drop out. Norwich coach Daniel Farke brings in Vrancic, Trybull, Rupp and Drmic for Tettey, McLean, Duda and Pukki after the win over Leicester.
SUBS: Kenny McLean, Alexander Tettey, Michael McGovern, Marco Stiepermann, Adam Idah, Ondrej Duda, Teemu Pukki.
NORWICH (4-2-3-1): Tim Krul; Max Aarons, Grant Hanley, Ben Godfrey, Jamal Lewis; Tom Trybull, Mario Vrancic; Emiliano Buendia, Lukas Rupp, Todd Cantwell; Josip Drmic.
SUBS: Japhet Tanganga, Gedson Fernandes, Tanguy Ndombele, Toby Alderweireld, Paulo Gazzaniga, Erik Lamela, Troy Parrott.
TOTTENHAM (4-2-3-1): Michel Vorm; Serge Aurier, Davinson Sanchez, Eric Dier, Jan Vertonghen (C); Harry Winks, Oliver Skipp, Giovani Lo Celso, Dele Alli, Steven Bergwijn; Lucas Moura.
Earlier in the competition, Tottenham needed replays to beat Middlesbrough and Southampton, while Norwich proved too much for Preston North End and Burnley.
Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho is under pressure at present after seeing his side lose their last three in all competitions. Back-to-back losses in the Premier League to Chelsea and Wolves followed a defeat to RB Leipzig in the Champions League. Norwich may be rock bottom of the league at present, but they eased fears of relegation by beating Leicester City last Friday night.
Good evening and welcome to tonight's live coverage of the FA Cup clash between Tottenham Hotspur and Norwich City.
