Commentary

That's all for today, goodbye!
Pochettino's side were made to work hard for the three points today as they join the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City in earning a first-game three points. For large parts of the match they looked devoid of ideas, though, and they will need to improve before they face City next weekend. There are a lot of positives for Villa to take from this performance as they now look forward to their game against Bournemouth.
Three second-half goals from Tottenham secure an opening day 3-1 win over Aston Villa. McGinn gave Villa a shock lead in the ninth minute when he latched onto Mings' long pass and slotted the ball past Lloris. Spurs improved massively in the second half though and equalised through Ndombele's first Premier League goal. Kane then got a double in the last 10 minutes to secure the points. He fired his first past Heaton before guiding a second past the opposition goalkeeper just four minutes later.

73' NDOMBELE EQUALISES FOR SPURS! The corner that followed Heaton's save proved more costly for Villa after Lucas picked out Ndombele outside the box. He struck his shot well and beat Heaton to find the bottom corner. 1-1!
73' BRILLIANT SAVE BY HEATON! The initial corner is cleared but Eriksen picks out Sanchez with his second cross into the box and the defender gets his shot on target. Heaton has to react quickly as it's close range and he punches the effort away.
71' Eriksen dispossesses Grealish in the final third and goes straight on the counter-attack. Kane is up with him but he overhits his cross and Villa are able to clear the danger.
69' Spurs string some good passes together and Kane gets it on the left of the box. He spots Eriksen's run to the end of the box and plays him in, but the substitute's shot is well wide of the post.
67' Heaton had come a long way out of his box to clear a long pass from Alderweireld, but the keeper only headed it into Eriksen's path. He touched it onto Lamela, who had an empty net to aim for but his tame shot was stopped by Mings.
65' Spurs have a corner and Lamela swings it into the box. He picks out Alderweireld at the near post, but the defender can only send his effort over the crossbar.

H. Winks
Tottenham Hotspur
64' Pochettino makes his first change of the game now as he brings on Eriksen to replace Winks.
63' Just like in the first-half, Spurs are slowing down the pace of the game as they struggle to find a way past Villa's defence.
61' The referee has just called McGinn and Walker-Peters over after the Spurs player angrily reacted to a challenge on him. There was a quick check by VAR for a red card for McGinn, but there is no sending off.
Jota Peleteiro
Trézéguet
Aston Villa
59' First change of the game is made by Villa as Jota is handed his debut as he comes on for Trezeguet.
57' Lucas' frustration is starting to show again now. Lamela plays a short throughball to him but as he turns away from his defender, he takes the ball out of play and Villa have a goal-kick.
55' Kane gets another chance on goal after he turns his defender. His shot is powerful but it's deflected which takes it wide of the far post.
53' Winks chips the ball into the box and picks out Kane in the middle. He rises above his defender but can't direct his header on target and El Mohamady is in the right place to clear it.
52' The Villa fans in the crowd are asking for a penalty. McGinn dispossessed Winks on the edge of the box before Sissoko crashed into him in the box and he went to ground. The referee waves the claim away though.
50' Lamela drifts out to the left and puts a good cross into the box. It misses Lucas and Kane but bounces through to Sissoko who's unmarked at the far post. He drags his shot though and it rolls out for a throw-in near the opposite corner flag.

46' Spurs get the game back underway for the second half!
Smith will be impressed with how his side have played in the first half. They've sat back and defended well but have also taken their chances to go forward and have caused Spurs some real problems. As for Spurs, they've created some very good opportunities in front of goal, but for large parts of the game have struggled to get in behind Villa. They've looked out of ideas at times and could benefit from someone like Eriksen being brought on in the second half.
Villa shocked Spurs with an early goal and lead 1-0 at the break. Spurs started the game very brightly, with Lucas having the first chance of the game within 20 seconds when his shot flew over the crossbar. Minutes later, he had also had a header saved by Heaton. Then, against the run of play, McGinn latched onto Mings' long pass, wrong-footed his defender and slotted the ball into the bottom corner. Kane had a couple of chances just before the break but couldn't get them on target.
45' + 2' HALF-TIME: TOTTENHAM 0-1 ASTON VILLA.
45' + 1' Kane has another chance to draw Spurs level as he pulls away from his defender to latch onto Lamela's pass. He's one-on-one with the keeper but drags his shot wide of the far post. It wouldn't have counted anyway though as he was offside when he got the ball.
45' KANE COMES CLOSE! It's a good cross into the box from Ndombele and Kane rises highest to get on the end of it in the six-yard box. He can't keep his effort down though and it sails over the crossbar.
43' Hourihane slips the ball to El Ghazi who has a go from outside the box. His shot is on target, but straight at Lloris and it's a comfortable save for the keeper.
42' Once again, Spurs can't get in behind Villa so Sissoko decides to have a go from long-range. It's not too far away, but it's always rising as it flies wide of the target.
40' Lucas wins the ball back for Spurs in midfield and has the chance to counter-attack. He's too slow to pick a pass to a team-mate though which gives Villa time to get back into their positions.
38' Spurs are still struggling to pass their way through Villa's defence and their frustration is starting to show. Lucas takes a heavy touch and gives the ball to Hourihane before fouling him as he tries to win it back.
36' Villa play their free-kick out to El Ghazi on the left and he puts a cross into the box. Wesley rises highest in the middle to meet it, but his header is straight at Lloris.
34' Kane isn't closed down as moves into the box and decides to have a shot. It's always rising though and flies over the crossbar.
33' Grealish is leading the counter-attack for Villa and has Trezeguet up in support with him. He squares the ball to his team-Trezeguet who has a lot of space on the edge of the box but his shot is tame and it's a comfortable save for Lloris.
31' Winks spots Kane's run to the near post and loops a good cross over Villa's defence to pick him out. El Mohamady just gets there ahead of him though and puts the ball out of play.
29' The Spurs players and fans are starting to get frustrated now as Villa are awarded a free-kick in a dangerous position. Sissoko caught El Ghazi with a late challenge but the crowd think he made too much of the contact.
27' Trezeguet puts a brilliant looping cross towards the far post. None of his team-mates are able to get on the end of it though as they made the wrong run and the chance goes to waste.
25' Spurs are keeping the ball well at the minute, but they aren't doing much with it. A lot of their possession is in midfield where it isn't causing Villa any problems.
23' Villa are starting to find their rhythm now and are moving the ball upfield with a lot more confidence. El Ghazi gets into a good position on the edge of the box but ends up fouling Sissoko before he can create a chance.
21' GOOD CHANCE FOR TREZEGUET! He just managed to keep himself onside as he got on the end of McGinn's pass before hitting his shot. He's closed down by two defenders though and his effort is blocked.
19' McGinn is the first Scottish player to score on his Premier League debut since Matt Phillips in September 2010 (for Blackpool vs Blackburn).
17' The home fans aren't happy with the referee at the minute as Kane has just gone to ground in the box and they want a penalty. There wasn't a lot in it and the referee had a good view of it as he waved the claim away.
15' Villa have a problem here and it's the goal scorer McGinn that's gone down and is receiving treatment. He collided with Winks as they tried to get the ball and it looks like he has a problem with his ankle. He's going to be able to carry on though.
13' Kane picks up the ball deep in midfield and loops a pass upfield to Lucas. The Brazilian almost gets on the end of it, but is just beaten to it by Engels who nods it onto Heaton to stop the chance.
11' It's back to how it was before the goal. Villa have all of their players sitting back once again and Spurs can't figure out a way to get in behind them and into the box.
T. Mings
Assist
Aston Villa
9' Mings gets his head up, deep in his own half, and spots McGinn's run through the middle. It was a perfectly weighted pass to pick out his team-mate and set up the opening goal.
J. McGinn
Goal
Aston Villa
9' MCGINN GIVES VILLA THE LEAD! It's completely against the run of play. A long ball over the top from Mings picks out McGinn between two defenders and he brings it down before wrong-footing Sanchez and slotting his shot low, past Lloris and into the bottom corner. 1-0 Villa!
8' Spurs have a free-kick near the byline on the right wing and Lamela is stepping up to take it. He goes for goal himself, despite the tight angle, and his effort sails over the crossbar.
7' Villa have barely been able to get on the ball yet due to Spurs' dominance and have all of their players sitting back to try and close down the space in midfield.
5' ANOTHER GOOD CHANCE FOR LUCAS! It's a brilliant cross into the box from Rose and he picks out Lucas who is unmarked in the middle. His header is heading in at the bottom corner but Heaton gets down to deny him.
3' Spurs are dominating the game in the opening minutes and are getting into some dangerous positions. Rose puts a cross into the box from the left but it's an easy catch for Heaton.
1' LUCAS COMES CLOSE! El Mohamady is dispossessed by Lucas down the left and he goes straight for goal. He takes the shot from the edge of the box, but his effort flies over the crossbar.
1' Grealish gets the game underway for Aston Villa!
The teams are out on the field now, with kick-off just moments away.

As for Villa, new signings Heaton, Mings, Engels, Trezeguet, El Ghazi and Wesley are all included in the starting line-up today. Luiz, Targett and Jota are also included in the squad but start on the bench.
Record signing Ndombele starts for Spurs, but Mauricio Pochettino doesn't have deadline day signings Giovani Lo Celso or Ryan Sessegnon, who is suffering with a hamstring injury, in the squad. Son Heung-min and Juan Foyth are also unavailable due to suspensions they received at the end of last season. Meanwhile, Eriksen starts on the bench amid questions over his future at the club.
