SuperSport United beat Orlando Pirates 3-0 in a league match which was played in Mbombela on Wednesday night.

Matsatsantsa were looking to secure their first league win of the season following their defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns in their opening match of the season.

Kaitano Tembo handed Kudakwashe Mahachi a start against his former side having joined SuperSport from Pirates a few weeks ago.

On the other hand, Bucs had started the new PSL campaign with a win over Bloemfontein Celtic, but they lost to Zambian side Green Eagles in the Caf Champions League clash on Saturday.

Thembinkosi Lorch was named among the substitutes after passing a late fitness test, while Fortune Mkaringe was handed his Pirates debut by Milutin Sredojevic.

SuperSport were the better side in the opening stages of the match, but they were limited to ambitious long-range shots as the Pirates defence looked solid and compact.

Mahachi, Teboho Mokoena, and Sipho Mbule tried their luck from distance and their attempts flew over the crossbar without troubling Wayne Sandilands.

Matsatsantsa had a chance to break the deadlock following a defensive error by the visitors' defence, but Mbule placed his effort wide.

However, the hosts deservedly opened the scoring when Bradley Grobler pounced on Thabiso Monyane's back-pass to beat Sandilands and make it 1-0 to SuperSport in the 35th minute.

Pirates tried to respond with a goal before the break, but SuperSport did well to protect their lead going into the dressing rooms.

Sredojevic made a double substitution at the start of the second half, introducing Lorch and Justin Shonga as he looked for fresh legs upfront.

However, Matsatsantsa did not sit back as they continued to attack in search of more goals with Mokoena working tirelessly behind Grobler.

Mokoena set up Grobler, who made it 2-0 to SuperSport with a beautiful half-volley after the Pirates defence had failed to clear the ball away in the 54th minute.

The three-time PSL champions looked dangerous every time they pushed forward and they managed to extend their lead after some good work by Mbule and Grobler.

Grobler played a delightful pass to Ghampani Lungu, who beat Sandilands to make it 3-0 to SuperSport with 21 minutes remaining on the clock.

Pirates launched did everything they could to pull one back, but they were frustrated by the SuperSport defence which looked impenetrable.

Ultimately, SuperSport emerged 3-0 winners over Pirates, who struggled to create clear-cut chances on the night.

The victory took Matsatsantsa to eighth place on the log standings, while Bucs slipped down to the ninth spot.
