That's all for now. Until next time, goodbye!
While Southampton are flying high, Newcastle remain in 11th. Bruce’s side were extremely poor today, and deserved little from the game.
A convincing 2-0 win for Southampton, who move to the top of the Premier League table for the first time. Even without their leading scorer Ings, the Saints had more than enough for lacklustre Newcastle, with Adams and Armstrong doing the damage.
90' + 3' Close! Armstrong goes for goal from 20 yards out. The strike is swerving a fair bit, but Darlow manages to keep it out.
90' + 1' There will be three minutes of added time at St Mary’s.
S. Longstaff
Yellow Card
90' Sean Longstaff goes into the book for flinging an arm out at Ward-Prowse.
S. Long
T. Walcott
88' Another change for Southampton. Long is on in place of Walcott, who has impressed on his St Mary's return.
86' GREAT STOP! That looked set to be 2-1 as Joelinton sent a diving header goalwards from Lewis’ cross. It seemed to be heading in, but McCarthy is there to parry it over.
85' Armstrong's strike was his third home goal in the league for Southampton, and first since February.
84' It was a dreadful mistake from Sean Longstaff, who dallied on the ball after Newcastle had managed to stall a run from Walcott. It was an error which, in truth, has summed up a dismal display from the visitors.
S. Armstrong
82' GOOOOALLLL!!! SOUTHAMPTON MAKE IT 2-0! The Saints are marching on right to the top of the league, after Armstrong robbed Sean Longstaff of possession and, following some neat footwork, thumped home a brilliant finish.
81' Newcastle have certainly got two big strikers to aim for in the form of Carroll and Joelinton, though the latter appears to have been instructed to play on the right wing for the time being.
J. Murphy
79' Murphy is the player who goes off for Joelinton.
A. Carroll
C. Wilson
78' Wilson has gone down holding his right hamstring, in a real worry for Newcastle. He is making way for Carroll, but Joelinton is also going to come on for the visitors.
77' Walcott is fine to carry on, but it was certainly a rash challenge from Newcastle’s captain. He appeared to get enough on the ball, however, for VAR not to advise the referee to go to the screen to check for a penalty.
75' That was a chance for Southampton, but a poor pass from Armstrong costs them. The Scotland international could have gone for goal but instead laid it off to Walcott, but his ball was underhit. Lascelles lunges in to make the tackle, and makes a big contact with Walcott, who will need treatment.
N. Redmond
M. Djenepo
74' A first change for the hosts sees Djenepo – who has put in a good shift down the left – make way for Redmond.
72' Southampton are unbeaten in their last five (W4 D1). Saints are looking to secure three consecutive Premier League victories for the first time since May 2016 under Ronald Koeman.
70' Murphy tries his luck from the free-kick, but he can’t get his effort up and over the five-man Southampton wall.
68' Newcastle lodge a rare attack and, after a cross from the right is cleared, Armstrong is penalised for a handball just outside the area. Could this be the chance Newcastle have been waiting for?
66' Wilson has scored six goals in his seven Premier League appearances for Newcastle, more than he had in his final 30 for Bournemouth in the competition (five). However, the forward has not yet had a touch in Southampton's area.
63' What a save! Ward-Prowse delivers another fantastic set-piece, which Bednarek meets at the near post. His header is going in, but Darlow reacts instinctively to make a fantastic stop.
M. Longstaff
J. Hendrick
61' A first change for Newcastle. Hendrick has made way for Matthew Longstaff, who joins his older brother Sean in midfield.
60' Djenepo goes down inside the area under pressure from Murphy, but the referee dismisses Southampton’s hopeful appeals for a spot-kick.
58' Southampton have had over 65 per cent of the possession so far today. Wilson has been starved of service up top for Newcastle but, still, the visitors are only one goal down.
56' Walcott and Ward-Prowse combine in midfield, with the latter releasing Adams. He drills it across to Djenepo in space, but a heavy touch forces the stand-in wing-back wide and Newcastle clear it for a corner.
54' Armstrong gets through on goal, though is low effort is saved by Darlow. It would not have counted either way, as the Southampton midfielder was offside.
51' OFF THE BAR! So close to a second yet again for Southampton, after Romeu lets rip from distance. His shot was dipping in, but Darlow got enough on it to tip it onto the crossbar.
50' CHANCE! Vestergaard meets Ward-Prowse’s corner and sends a header into the ground. His centre-back partner Bednarek directs it goalwards, but Lascelles is on hand to clear it off the line.
49' Walcott is allowed to travel a long way with the ball, with Newcastle’s defence standing off him. He eventually gets a shot off around 20 yards out, and it is deflected out for a corner.
48' Since his Southampton debut in 2015, Romeu has received at least nine more yellow cards than any other player in the Premier League (48)
46' The second half is underway at St Mary's.
Newcastle, however, are adept at staying in games and capitalising on the one or two chances which may come their way. Hasenhuttl will know this, and will demand his side put the game to bed quickly. As it stands, Southampton are heading to the top of the Premier League.
An excellent first-half display from Southampton, though they only have a slender lead, which came courtesy of Adams’ early strike. Newcastle have been all at sea at the back and are rather fortunate to only be one down.
44' Ward-Prowse – who provided an assists and scored twice against Villa – delivers a fine free-kick with plenty of pace, but Darlow lunged out to punch it clear.
F. Fernández
Yellow Card
43' Walcott seizes on a mistake from Lewis, and Fernandez has to dive in and make a desperate challenge, for which he receives a booking.
42' CHANCE! That could easily have been Walcott’s first goal of his second Southampton spell! The Saints pounced on another sloppy Newcastle mistake and Walcott collected it on the edge of the area. He turned and got a shot off, but it curled just beyond the right-hand upright.
40' Walcott injects some pace with a neat flick away from Almiron. He loses it, but presses high and forces a mistake from Newcastle's defence, and Southampton are swiftly back in possession.
37' Ward-Prowse drives forward from deep, laying it off for Walcott. He looks to play a one-two, floating it on into the area, but Southampton’s captain can’t get there.
35' Bar that mistake from McCarthy and Longstaff’s header, Southampton really have not been tested at all at the back so far, and Ward-Prowse and Romeu are finding plenty of space in midfield.
33' Walcott has been directly involved in more Premier League goals against Newcastle than any other opponent in his career.
31' Walcott has so often been shunted into wide positions doing his career, but he is playing right up alongside Adams today and appears to be thriving. His pace is a real issue for Newcastle in the centre of the pitch.
29' Southampton are just sitting off Newcastle a bit when the visitors have possession, but as soon as there is a heavy touch then the home side are right onto it. This time it is captain Ward-Prowse who pounces and tries to feed a pass through to Walcott, but it is cut out.
Oriol Romeu
Yellow Card
27' Saint-Maximin spins away from Romeu, who has little choice but to bring down the attacker and receive a card.
24' With his assist for Adams’ opener, Walcott has now set up a goal in three of his last four Premier League starts for Southampton and Everton combined.
22' Saint-Maximin is managing to find pockets of space in front of Southampton’s defence. He picks out Lewis, who floats in an inviting cross which Longstaff meets, but the midfielder can only send his header straight at McCarthy.
21' Good defending from Djenepo, who tracked the run of Saint-Maximin and got across to divert the Newcastle forward’s effort out for a corner.
19' A first sighting of goal for Wilson is cut off by Ward-Prowse, but Newcastle keep up the pressure and win a corner. McCarthy comes out to try and claim it, but gets nowhere near the ball. Fortunately for Southampton, Lascelles cannot direct his header home.
16' Adams has scored in three of Southampton's eight league games this season (three goals), as many different Premier League matches as he found the net in across 30 appearances last term (four goals).
14' High and wide! Southampton break after Romeu steals the ball in midfield. He fed Walcott, who elected to try his luck from distance, but the 31-year-old sliced his effort way off target.
12' Southampton are playing so well. Their passing is crisp and precise and, after Walker-Peters sees a cross blocked, Romeu whips in a delivery to Adams. He takes a couple of touches and gets a shot off on the spin, but it lacks the power to beat Darlow.
11' Southampton have lost all three of their home Premier League games played on Fridays, by an aggregate score of 2-15. Their last such match ended in a 0-9 defeat against Leicester City in October 2019, but they have started excellently on this occasion.
9' Bruce will be furious with his side, though they are no strangers to going behind and then just managing to stay in matches. Indeed, Newcastle came from behind to beat Southampton last season.
T. Walcott
7' With Ings out, Walcott will be tasked with providing the support to Adams and the on-loan Everton winger did just that, winning the ball back deep in Newcastle’s half and picking out the striker brilliantly.
C. Adams
7' GOOOOOAAAALLLL!!! What a start for Southampton! Seconds after testing Darlow with a brilliant curling strike, Adams gives the hosts the lead. Walker-Peters and Walcott combined to rob Almiron of possession, with Walcott then supplying the cross for Adams to hammer home on the volley.
6' One area that Newcastle could target is Southampton’s left flank. Ryan Bertrand is out and Djenepo – a winger by trade – is filling in in an unfamiliar wing-back role.
5' Walcott tries to prod a loose ball beyond Fernandez, but the Newcastle defender gets there first and then draws a clumsy foul from Ward-Prowse.
3' The last time Saints ended a day at the summit of the top-flight table was back in September 1988 under Chris Nicholl.
1' KICK-OFF! We are up and running at St Mary's!
The teams are out at St Mary’s. Southampton are aiming to finish a day top of the Premier League for the very first time, while Newcastle are unbeaten on their travels this term.
No changes from Steve Bruce, who sticks with the same side that started in the 2-1 win over Everton on Sunday, with forward Wilson scoring twice in that victory.
NEWCASTLE SUBSTITUTES: Ciaran Clark, Matthew Longstaff, Andy Carroll, Joelinton, Isaac Hayden, Javier Manquillo, Mark Gillespie.
NEWCASTLE (3-5-2): Karl Darlow; Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles, Federico Fernandez; Jacob Murphy, Sean Longstaff, Jeff Hendrick, Miguel Almiron, Jamal Lewis; Callum Wilson, Allan Saint-Maximin.
Southampton are missing their star man today, with Danny Ings having sustained an injury in the 4-3 win over Aston Villa. Ralph Hasenhuttl has shifted to a back three, with Djenepo and Stephens the players to come in.
SOUTHAMPTON SUBSTITUES: Shane Long, Nathan Redmond, Nathan Tella, Ibrahima Diallo, Dan N'Lundulu, Kayne Ramsay, Fraser Forster.
SOUTHAMPTON (3-4-3): Alex McCarthy; Jan Bednarek, Jannik Vestergaard, Jack Stephens; Kyle Walker-Peters, James Ward-Prowse, Oriol Romeu, Moussa Djenepo; Theo Walcott, Che Adams, Stuart Armstrong.
Newcastle, meanwhile, defeated Everton last time out and would move into the top four should they claim all three points today.
Southampton are unbeaten in five league matches, winning four of them. It has lifted them up to fifth, and a victory tonight will take them to the top of the table.
