Commentary

Thanks for joining our commentary this afternoon. Until next time, goodbye.
Southampton are next in action against West Ham United on the road next Saturday, while Bournemouth are at home against Tottenham.
The two sides play out an entertaining 3-3 draw this afternoon that proves to be enough to guide Southampton over the line in their battle against the drop. The Saints' point along with Cardiff's defeat at the hands of Fulham secures their Premier League status. Shane Long put the home side ahead in the 12th minute, but the visitors responded through goals from Dan Gosling and Callum Wilson to take a 2-1 lead into the break. Southampton then roared into life in the second half as James Ward-Prowse and Matt Targett found the net. It looked to be enough for the three points for the Saints, but Wilson steered home a Ryan Fraser cross to equalise and could have snatched the win, only to spurn a good opportunity at the death. Each team rightfully earns a share of the spoils.

71' Hojbjerg lines up an effort from 25 yards and he makes solid contact with his strike, only for the ball to travel wide of the target.

M. Targett
Goal

The goal came from impressive work from Ings in the box, who stole the ball away from Simpson. He fed Valery on the charge down the right flank, who lifted his cross to the back post. Targett was there to meet the ball with a powerful header, providing enough power to beat Cook on the line.
65' Southampton are winning the 50/50 battles on the field to put Bournemouth under pressure in their own half.
63' The visitors are trying to get a foot in the game again. They've been quiet since the restart.

49' Gosling is down for the visitors and requires treatment on the pitch. He might not be able to continue here.
48' OVER! The Saints win a corner down the right flank, and the delivery from Ward-Prowse is cleared as far as Bertrand on the edge of the box. He goes for the strike, only to blast his attempt over the bar.
46' We're back underway at St Mary's Stadium.
M. Targett
Oriol Romeu
46' Targett replaces Romeu for the home side, which will involve a reshuffle in formation.
Ralph Hasenhuttl will not be pleased with his side's first-half performance. They were in control in the early stages of the game and took a deserved lead, but were then pegged back, conceding a cheap goal on the counter before a poor save by Gunn allowed Wilson to score. The game is still there for the home side, but they will have to improve in the second period.
Bournemouth have come from behind to lead 2-1 at the break against Southampton at St Mary's Stadium. Shane Long put the home side ahead in the 12th minute when his strike was deflected past Artur Boruc by Nathan Ake. The Cherries responded on the counter as Joshua King and Callum Wilson combined to tee up Dan Gosling to rifle an effort home. Eddie Howe's men went ahead when David Brooks saw his effort saved by Angus Gunn, but Wilson was there to convert the rebound. The Cherries are in control at the interval.

C. Wilson
Goal
32' GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!! WILSON CONVERTS FROM CLOSE RANGE!! 2-1 BOURNEMOUTH! The Cherries take the lead and it's one that will not please Gunn in the Southampton goal. The visitors catch out the hosts with a quickly-taken short corner. Fraser's delivery is cleared as far as Brooks on the edge of the box. He takes on the strike on his left foot, forcing a stop from Gunn. However, the keeper palms the ball straight out into the middle of the box where Wilson pounces to score from six yards.
30' Brooks and Gosling almost combine in the box to tee up Wilson in the middle, but Stephens makes an important challenge to clear ahead of the forward.
27' Bournemouth almost work their way through the Saints' defence as King slides an offload towards Brooks, but he gets closed down before he can shoot by Valery.

16' Southampton are looking hungry out on the pitch. They're flooding forward with numbers at almost every opportunity.
14' Ward-Prowe stands up a dangerous cross towards the back post for the run of Ings, but it just evades the forward on the dive.
N. Redmond
Assist

S. Long
Goal
12' GOALLLLLLLLLL!!! LONG PUTS SOUTHAMPTON AHEAD!!! It has been coming and Long continues his good form with a strike into the bottom corner. Redmond burst into space down the left flank before cutting the ball back to the forward in space on the edge of the box. He picked his spot, drilling his attempt into the bottom corner with the aid of a deflection from Ake.
11' Bournemouth survive the resulting corner, but they're well and truly under pressure here.
10' SAVE! Boruc comes to the fore for the Cherries as he spreads himself to deny Redmond with a clipped effort after Hojbjerg had released the winger with a precise throughball.
7' The visitors are definitely second best in these early stages and need to settle into the contest.
5' Bournemouth remain on the back foot, but they hold firm as Ward-Prowse and Hojbjerg are denied with attempts from close range.
3' Hojbjerg lifts the resulting corner into the box and Bednarek guides an attempt towards goal, only to be denied by a block by Lerma.
2' Southampton put the pressure on in the early stages of the contest as Ings sees his strike diverted behind for a corner by Mepham.
1' We're underway at St Mary's Stadium.
Southampton have lost just one of their last 11 meetings with Bournemouth in all competitions (W6 D4), a 0-2 loss in March 2016.
Howe has made two changes to his team from the Cherries' loss at the hands of Fulham last week. Fraser drops to the bench after struggling with a calf injury, while Junior Stanislas misses out altogether. Simpson and Clyne come into the team in the back three and wing-back respectively.
Southampton have made two changes from the team that drew against Watford during the week. Ings comes into the fold to lead the line alongside Long in attack, while Valery slots into the defence at right-back. There's no place in the squad for Maya Yoshida due to illness, while Armstrong drops to the bench.
BOURNEMOUTH SUBS: Lys Mousset, Jordon Ibe, Emerson Hyndman, Ryan Fraser, Asmir Begovic, Dominic Solanke, Sam Surridge.
BOURNEMOUTH (3-4-3): Artur Boruc; Chris Mepham, Steve Cook, Jack Simpson; Nathaniel Clyne, Dan Gosling, Jefferson Lerma, Nathan Ake; Callum Wilson, David Brooks, Joshua King.
SOUTHAMPTON SUBS: Charlie Austin, Stuart Armstrong, Mario Lemina, Matt Targett, Josh Sims, Fraser Forster, Kayne Ramsey.
SOUTHAMPTON (4-4-2): Angus Gunn; Yan Valery, Jan Bednarek, Jack Stephens, Ryan Bertrand; James Ward-Prowse, Oriol Romeu, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Nathan Redmond; Shane Long, Danny Ings.
Eddie Howe's men are enduring an inconsistent end to the season. They hammered Brighton and Hove Albion 5-0 two weeks ago, but then slumped to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Fulham last time out. The Cherries will not want their campaign to peter out and will be desperate to finish as high in the table as possible to take momentum into next term.
There's still work ahead of Southampton to secure their place in the Premier League for next season. The Saints begin the day six points clear of Cardiff City in the final relegation spot, but a win would take them clear of the Bluebirds to the 40-point mark, which would all but secure their place in the top flight. Ralph Hasenhuttl's men were denied a win by a late Andre Gray goal against Watford during the week and will be more determined to get over the line this afternoon.
Good afternoon and welcome to the live commentary of the Premier League clash between Southampton and Bournemouth at St Mary's Stadium.
