Commentary

Full-time at the Veltins-Arena. Schalke easily continue their winning run in the Europa League by dispatching of Nice with a 2-0 result at home, with the French side subsequently being knocked out. The goalscorers on the night were Konoplyanka and Aogo either side of half-time, so a job well done for the hosts. Thanks for joining us, see you next time.
Y. Cardinale
Yellow Card
Nice
90' + 4' Cardinale sees yellow too, for his reaction.
B. Tekpetey
Yellow 2nd/RC
Schalke 04
90' + 3' An unsavoury end to proceedings now as Tekpetey is sent off for going in a bit to strongly on the goalkeeper, Cardinale. Looked a bit harsh, so he may indeed have a shout of getting that rescinded.
90' Three minutes of added time have been signalled by the referee which sounds about right as there haven't been too many stoppages. Nice have wanted to get on the plane home for quite a long time now.
88' SAAAAAAVE FROM CARDINALE! Schalke are attempting to heap more misery on the visitors here as Aogo collects the ball deep down the wing near the corner flag before digging out a superb, deep cross into the area. Naldo, who finds himself in an advanced area, bullets a header at goal, but he is thwarted by the goalkeeper who makes the stop.
86' Eyserric attempts to give the travelling Nice fans something to shout about with a galloping run down the left wing before cutting inside on his right foot to shoot. However, it proved to be very comfortable in the end for Fahrmann as the Schalke stopper gets his body behind the ball.
84' Nice have simply not done enough tonight to justify a place in the second round of the Europa League as they have been fairly negative even when a win was required. A silver lining though is that they can now concentrate on their surprise assault on the Ligue 1 Championship.
D. Avdijaj
N. Bentaleb
Schalke 04
82' When Bentaleb caught that whack to the face from the defender it appears he may have picked up a head injury despite carrying on for a few minutes. By the way he is holding his nose it may be broken, and he is away to have it examined. Donis Avdijaj is his replacement.
D. Aogo
Penalty Goal
Schalke 04
80' GOAL! GOAL FOR SCHALKE! Aogo steps up and confidently dispatches the penalty into the bottom left corner past the goalkeeper! Two-nil.
79' PENALTY TO SCHALKE! The home side have the chance to wrap up the victory and knock Nice out of the Europa League as Koziello needlessly leaves a dangling leg on Tekpetey as the centre-forward twists and turns his way into the penalty area. Soft, but there was contact.
77' Bentaleb has looked promising since coming off the bench and has added some real quality in the opposition half with his lovely command of possession. He actually manages to get away an attempt on goal with a header at the front post, but only receives a whack to the face from the defender rather than the glory of the second goal.
75' JUST WIDE FROM PLEA! This game is finally beginning to burst into life which may be very timely indeed for Nice. On this occasion, the recently introduced Plea rises high inside the box to glance a header at goal after getting the better of the defender, but unfortunately for the visitors it flashes wide of the post. Promising, though.
73' SAAAAVVE FROM CARDINALE! Bentaleb eases away a couple of challenges on the edge of the opposition area before opening up his body to attempted a curled strike towards the corner. It takes a massive deflection on the route through which makes it difficult for the Nice goalkeeper, but the save is eventually made to put behind for a Schalke corner.
71' Just under 20 minutes remaining now and at the moment there are no signs that Nice are capable of even finding an equaliser never mind the win they need to keep their Europa League campaign running. Schalke really have been extremely comfortable for the majority of play here tonight which will please Markus Weinzierl.
V. Marcel
R. Walter
Nice
69' The last throw of the dice from Lucien Favre now as he makes his third and final substitution. It is make or break for Nice now as Remi Walters speedily makes his way off the pitch, with Vincent Marcel entering the action to try and aid the Ligue 1 leaders to an unlikely comeback.
T. Kehrer
Yellow Card
Schalke 04
67' Yet another yellow card as the referee is kept more than busy. A fairly standard one for Kehrer as he blocks off the path through the middle for the oncoming Koziello.
A. Pléa
Ricardo Pereira
Nice
66' Second alteration in quick succession from Nice as Alassane Plea replaces Ricardo Pereira.
V. Eysseric
Y. Belhanda
Nice
65' First change of the match from Favre and it will see the rather ineffective Younes Belhanda, previously of Schalke of course, make his way to the dugout to be replaced by Valentin Eyserric.
64' Again, Schalke are more than happy to let Nice try and break them down and the French side currently look unable to do so. Apart from that very unfortunate effort from Donis in the first half which struck the bar, Fahrmann has not been tested to a high degree between the sticks for the hosts.
O. Boscagli
Yellow Card
Nice
62' The bookings are coming thick and fast now and the latest to see yellow is Boscagli. Have to say, though, the Nice man is pretty unlucky as he clearly got a bit of the ball in his challenge with Tekpetey, but it was from behind sohe is penalised.
N. Bentaleb
Y. Konoplyanka
Schalke 04
61' Second change of the match from Schalke and it is a pragmatic one as Nabil Bentaleb enters the action to replace Konoplyanka.
58' Nice need to be a little more creative from their set-piece opportunities. As Aogo needlessly takes out Koziello in the middle of the park, the visitors opt to take it quickly rather than getting the free-kick into the box, which is pretty ill-advised as Schalke were already in pretty solid defensive positions.
56' Reese attempts to turn provider this time which he is clearly more adept at. He finds space on the right wing before curling a teasing cross into the danger area, but two Schalke team-mates actually get in each other's way when trying to get the header away, meaning Nice get the opportunity to clear! A poor miscommunication there.
54' AN ABSOLUTE SITTER FROM REESE! Junior Caicara bursts his way down the right flank and makes his way into the channel before picking out a quite delightful pass into the centre of the box behind the Nice defence. The substitute meets it with a first-time strike, but it is slammed into the side-netting even though he had a clear route to goal!
52' At times this has been a bit of an exhibition match for Schalke as they know that they don't need to play at a high tempo. They are actually looking for Nice to try and press out for the equaliser so they can pick them off.
B. Tekpetey
Yellow Card
Schalke 04
50' Another booking now, and it is a very embarrassing one for Tekpetey, who clearly dives well out of the way of a challenge from Dante. That would probably have got a 10/10 in the Olympics, but here he just lies on the floor before seeing yellow and sheepishly getting to his feet.
49' You would like to think that Nice were aiming to keep as solid as possible and keep the scoreline low in the first half so they could have a real assault on the Schalke goal after the break. They need to do it, or they are heading out of the competition, so hopefully we will see some more attacking ambition from the Ligue 1 leaders.
Dante
Yellow Card
Nice
47' A very positive introduction from Reese, who is already taking the game to Nice with a powerful run. However, he is swiftly stopped in his tracks by veteran defender, Dante, who simply cannot compete with the speed of the youngster and ends up scything him down to receive the yellow card.
F. Reese
M. Meyer
Schalke 04
46' A change from Schalke at the break which sees Fabian Reese come on for Max Meyer.
46' We are back under way in this Group I encounter!
45' + 2' Half-time in the Veltins-Arena. Schalke remain on course to maintain their 100% record in the Group Stage of the Europa League as they lead Nice 1-0 at the break through a Konoplyanka goal. The visitors, at the moment, are heading out, so need to sort themselves out for the second 45 minutes.
45' Two minutes of added time have been allocated by the ref so it looks like a Schalke lead at half-time. Lucien Favre will need to do something different with his charges as at the moment they are going out of the competition with a bit of a whimper.
43' A small break in play at the moment as an altercation in the middle of the park between Meyer and Boscagli leaves the Nice man down clutching his ankle. There was nothing sinister in the coming-together, but it is the latter who comes out the worse after just losing his balance.
41' Meyer has strolled through this game so far and has barely broke a sweat in his attempts to control the game from just behind the strikers. On this occasion, he flights a lovely ball down the left wing for the onrushing Baba only to receive possession back, but Nice survive after the subsequent shot on goal goes wayward.
39' The first half is just winding down without much incident at the moment as Schalke easily evade being put under much trouble at the back. Nice had that good period in the middle of the half through a succession of corner-kicks, but they were unable to take advantage and the hosts look comfortable again.
37' Although Schalke are leading, one thing they have been guilty of failing at so far is testing the goalkeeper, Cardinale. The man between the sticks for Nice made a terrible mistake for the opening goal, bundling the ball to the feet of Konoplyanka after a save, but his confidence hasn't been tested again by any strikes coming from the German outfit.
35' Junior Caicara hugs the right wing and eventually runs in behind the Nice defence to cross in to the feet of Tekpetey. The young Schalke centre-forward initially does well to take possession in with an assured touch in a tight area, but the strike on goal disappoints and doesn't even test the goalkeeper.
33' Ricardo Pereira collects the ball to feet deep down the right touchline and cuts inside to a more central area before finding the feet of Walter. The Frenchman is awarded far too much space around 30 yards out and decides to try his luck with a strike on goal, but although struck-well, the subsequent attempt is dragged beyond the right-hand post.
31' Dante ventures out of defence with the ball in a bit more successful fashion this time as he drifts past a couple of challenges before lashing a pass into the feet of Belhanda, who displays a lovely few touches to get out of a tight area inside the centre circle. Nice just can't manage to find a pass to break down the Schalke defence thereafter, though.
Dalbert Henrique
Yellow Card
Nice
29' First yellow card of the match now and it is a deserved one for Dalbert as the Nice midfielder rises high in a challenge with Caicara just to leave a wayward elbow into the face of the Brazilian.
27' Nice heap plenty of pressure on the Schalke defence with a succession of corners from either side of the goal. The latest is curled in dangerously by Walter and a player from the visitors goes down looking for a penalty, but the referee quickly waves away any slight protests.
25' Donis has been the one bright spark so far for Nice and is involved in the action positively here again as he goes on a marauding run down the left wing before eventually gaining the corner-kick out of the retreating Riether. The resulting set-piece is swung into the Schalke box, as the hosts are forced to clear behind for another.
23' An impressive period of sustained possession at the moment from Schalke as they patiently knock the ball around in midfield, hoping to force Nice to come out of their defensive shape. The visitors are indeed deploying five men at the back when the German side have the ball, which perhaps may be slightly pragmatic if they are to try and go on and win this.
21' Nice haven't looked that bad going forward but defensive frailties are starting to rear their ugly head. They are trying to play out from the back through Dante in particular, but the former Bayern Munich defender has been too lackadaisical in possession, often giving it away in potential threatening areas.
19' The Schalke fans have typically been in full voice since before the match and continue to do so here, with the decibel level just being struck up a notch due to the opening goal. This was always going to be a bit of a party atmosphere for the Gelsenkircken outfit - they know they have Europe after Christmas.
17' Favre and his charges need to try and not be too disheartened by the past five minutes as they were just beginning to make their presence felt in the proceedings before going a goal down, and in sloppy fashion. They have a lot of work to do to try and save the victory, and their European campaign now, though.
Y. Konoplyanka
Goal
Schalke 04
15' GOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLL FOR SCHALKE! Things get from bad to worse for Nice! Just as the visitors are unlucky not to go ahead after hitting the woodwork, the home side take the lead in fortunate fashion as Meyer's strike lands perfectly for Konoplyanka at the back post, with the Ukrainian taking advantage of a mistake from the goalkeeper to slot home! One-nil after an awful bit of play from Cardinale.
13' NICE ALMOST TAKE THE LEAD! Donis collects the ball on the edge of the Schalke box and evades the attentions of his marker before whipping an outstanding strike at goal which looks destined to find the top corner. However, it just doesn't dip in time and ends up crashing off the crossbar! So very unlucky!
11' Nice have struggled to maintain any kind of ascendancy here and the pressure may indeed be getting to the visitors as they realise they need to win. Having said that, it is early doors and if they can start to pile the pressure on to Schalke, the Bundesliga side might not be up for it as they don't need any points.
9' Riether makes his way down the right wing completely unopposed before swinging a fantastic cross in to the edge of the six-yard box. Tekpetey strives to get on the end of it but Cardinale bravely dashes off his line just to clear at the last minute, clattering into Dante in the process. Almost a great goal there!
7' Naldo goes walkabout in a dangerous area at the back and is swiftly punished by Belhanda who quickly pounces to win possession before the ball finds its way to Donis. The Nice centre-forward goes for his first attempt on goal with a crack from a tight angle to the right of the box, but it ends up going harmlessly over the bar. Poor in the end after a promising build-up.
5' We may be in for a fairly tight match tonight going by how both head coaches have opted to set-up their respective starting XIs. Although the full-backs on show are all fairly attacking-minded, both Schalke and Nice have deployed three centre-backs in what could either be a back three or indeed a back five with their team-mates on the wings. We shall see.
3' A positive start to the match from Schalke who have the fortune to be able to go about their business tonight without any pressure due to the fact they are already qualified as group winners. Already a small break in play, though, as Walter is taken out with a strong challenge from Riether, but no card is issued by the referee.
1' We are under way at the Veltins-Arena!
Schalke have the best defensive record in the Europa League Group Stage so far and have conceded just once in their four fixtures. This is certainly not ideal for Nice who need to win tonight, and who have not even managed to find the back of the net in each of their last two trips for away games in Germany.
Nice subs: Sarr, Marcel, Seri, Eysseric, Plea, Cyprien, Benitez.
Nice (3-5-2): Cardinale; Souquet, Dante, Bodmer; Ricardo Pereira, Walter, Boscagli, Koziello, Dalbert Henrique; Belhanda, Donis.
Schalke subs: Howedes, Kolasinac, Bentaleb, Reese, Schopf, Avdijaj, Giefer.
Schalke (3-5-2): Fahrmann; Riether, Naldo, Kehrer; Junior Caicara, Stambouli, Meyer, Aogo, Baba; Konoplyanka, Tekpetey.
TEAM NEWS...
The previous match between Schalke and Nice was the opening match of Group I and took place at the Stade de Nice. On that occasion in the middle of September, a solitary strike from Chelsea loanee, Baba Rahman, secured the victory for Markus Weinzierl's side.
Nice, meanwhile, have only managed to record three points so far, having won just one out of their four games. However, surprisingly, Lucien Favre and his charges can still actually qualify for the next round, but only if they can win tonight away in Germany, win on Matchday Six, and hope other results go their way. Despite their disappointments on the European front, they have defied expectations domestically to lead Ligue 1 after 13 games ahead of the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco.
We are at the business end of the group stage now and as such the standings have started to take shape. Fortunately for the Bundesliga outfit, they have already managed to secure qualification to the knockout stage as group winners after winning all four of their opening four fixtures, six points clear of second-placed Krasnodar.
Good evening football fans! Welcome to LIVE coverage of the UEFA Europa League Group I encounter between Schalke and Nice from the Veltins-Arena.
