Commentary

That concludes our commentary of the LaLiga fixture between Real Madrid and Sevilla! We hope you’ve enjoyed it.
Real Madrid take to the pitch again on Wednesday, when they face Athletic Bilbao in LaLiga. Sevilla have a match against Cordoba on the same day in the Copa del Rey, ahead of a weekend meeting with Villarreal.
Despite an open and entertaining first half which saw goals from Mir and Benzema, the second frame brought with it a bit more apprehension - as both sides attempted to avoid defeat in this crucial top-of-the-table clash. Both Real Madrid and Sevilla had opportunities to put themselves ahead but the hosts seemed to have the better of the play - stretching Acuna and Montiel on both flanks often bypassing the opposing midfield. A raft of substitutions late on in the match put the Merengues further into the ascendancy - disrupting the visitors as Ancelotti’s side were able to capitalise on their momentum with just three minutes remaining in the match - after Vinicius’ superb direct run was capped with a delightfully accurate strike that beat Bounou for pace and placement. The win puts Real Madrid four points clear at the top, while Sevilla drop to fourth thanks to Atletico Madrid’s win earlier today.

87' Militao's superb switch of play is given as the assist on what could be the match-winning goal.
Vinícius Júnior
Goal
Real Madrid
87' VINICIUS COMES UP TRUMPS AGAIN! 2-1 REAL MADRID! It’s an absolutely sublime effort from the Real Madrid winger, latching onto Militao’s switch from right to left before driving forward, cutting inside and unleashing an almighty strike from well outside the penalty area that leaves Bounou sprawling in vain! What a hit!
86' Kroos looks to be aiming for the far corner with his free-kick but he gets the delivery all wrong - missing the net entirely on its way behind for a goal-kick.
L. Ocampos
Yellow Card
Sevilla
84' Ocampos is booked for a handball right on the edge of the penalty area on the left - just ahead of Mendy.
84' JUST OVER! Kroos teases a free-kick to the edge of the 18-yard box for Alaba, who unleashes a powerful volley - struck cleanly with his stronger left foot. It’s a great effort from the Austria international but he’s unable to keep the chance down - instead firing it over the crossbar.
Óscar Rodríguez
Joan Jordán
Sevilla
81' Jordan is the second man recalled to the bench, with Rodriguez sent into the fray.
Óliver Torres
A. Gómez
Sevilla
81' With less than 10 minutes remaining, Sevilla make a double change. The first alteration sees Torres sent on for Gomez.
79' Vinicius cuts inside from the left and looks to play a pass into the penalty area for Alaba, but it’s put too close to Carlos, who is able to clear it somewhat unconvincingly.
77' Play is stopped for Montiel, who is feeling the back of his leg after blocking Casemiro’s shot towards goal. The right-back seems capable to continue but he’s moving slightly awkwardly as he clamours to get back onto the pitch.
75' Benzema plays the ball to Casemiro, who looks to play a throughball into the penalty area for the captain, before deciding against it due to a crowd of bodies. The Brazil international instead cuts inside and looks to shoot but two Sevilla defenders converge to block the effort.
E. Camavinga
L. Modrić
Real Madrid
73' Modric makes way as well as Ancelotti makes two changes at one time. Camavinga is sent on to make an impact.
F. Valverde
Asensio
Real Madrid
73' Asensio is replaced with 17 minutes remaining, as Valverde is introduced.
T. Delaney
I. Rakitić
Sevilla
71' The first change of the match sees Delaney replace Rakitic in midfield.
70' Acuna lifts the delivery into the penalty area looking for Rakitic, but Militao uses his strength to get to the ball first and clear the danger.
Carvajal
Yellow Card
Real Madrid
69' Carvajal uses his studs to take Acuna down - leaving the Argentina full-back in a bit of pain. It's a yellow card for the Real Madrid defender, while Sevilla are given a free-kick just outside the penalty area on the left.
66' Asensio has just one man to beat in order to get onto the loose ball and drive unabated towards the Sevilla penalty area, but Carlos uses his strength and experience to win possession back from the Real Madrid winger while avoiding a foul.
64' Casemiro sprays a powerful ball from the right-back position to the left wing for Vinicius to latch onto, but it’s hit a bit too hard as Bounou is able to step off his line and get into possession first.
62' This time it's Modric who severely mistimes his tackle, bringing Gomez to the ground. It's a free-kick in a central position for Sevilla, which Rakitic takes short.
T. Kroos
Yellow Card
Real Madrid
61' Kroos lunges into Montiel after the full-back had already played a pass forward - sending the Argentina international to the ground in a heap. It’s a yellow card for the Real Madrid midfielder.
59' Sevilla have lost only one of their seven away games in LaLiga 2021/22 (W3 D3), 1-0 against Granada in October, their lowest number of away losses at this stage of the season since 2011/12 (W1 D5 L1).
57' SO CLOSE! A lovely interchange in midfield puts Asensio through on his path towards the penalty area. Despite options to the left and right, the winger cuts inside and curls an effort towards goal - which misses the target disappointingly.
G. Montiel
Yellow Card
Sevilla
55' Montiel is booked for tugging back Vinicius with both hands before diving into a sliding tackle in order to bring the Brazil international to the ground.
54' Gomez’s corner from the right finds Ocampos, but his awkward header is sent the other way as the winger clears Real Madrid’s penalty area for them.
52' Sevilla haven’t managed to beat Real Madrid in their last five meetings - since a 3-0 win in September 2018. The did manage to arrest a run of four straight defeats last time out though when they fought for a 2-2 draw away from home.
50' Jordan sees space ahead of him thanks to Kroos and Modric’s lax closing down, but the shot from 35 yards flies predictably high of Courtois’ net.
48' Gomez cuts inside from the left ahead of Carvajal in trademark style, before curling an effort towards goal that’s easy for Courtois to catch.
46' Real Madrid get the match restarted from the kick-off!
With both sides able to call upon creative players going forward, the second half will no doubt feature further scoring. As legs begin to tire, Ancelotti will be able to inject pace into his midfield via Valverde and Camavinga, while the experienced Vazquez could come in for relief of Asensio. Sevilla are able to call upon players in a similar area of the field, with Denmark international Delaney as well as Torres waiting to be called from the bench.
An exciting first half at the Santiago Bernabeu comes to a close with Real Madrid and Sevilla locked in a tight 1-1 tie. The visitors took just 12 minutes to open the scoring after poor marking from a corner allowed Mir to get a free header off, beating Courtois with superb accuracy. Lopetegui’s side were clearly in the ascendancy and could have doubled their lead, but Mir was unable to double his side’s advantage from close range. Real Madrid failed to pose the Sevilla defence many problems, but they managed to get themselves level after Bounou was unable to deal with Militao’s long-range effort, allowing Benzema to pop up and tuck home the rebound. Sevilla could find themselves unlucky to not be awarded a penalty after contact in the area between Alaba and Ocampos - but the referee seemed confident in his initial decision.
45' + 3' HALF-TIME: REAL MADRID 1-1 SEVILLA.
45' + 2' The fourth official indicates three minutes will be added to the end of the first half for stoppages.
45' ASENSIO FIRES WIDE! Mendy drives inside, beating Montiel before stretching to play a pass to his left for Asensio. The winger hits a strike at the first time of asking but sends his effort disappointingly high over the crossbar.
43' Alaba gets all the way to the edge of Sevilla’s 18-yard box, but his square pass to Vinicius is intercepted well by an alert Carlos.
41' Real Madrid haven’t lost any of their last five games against Sevilla in LaLiga (W4 D1) and haven’t gone six or more without a loss to Sevilla in the competition since April 2003 (W13 D2).
39' The ball goes out of play which prompts a VAR review after the earlier contact in the penalty area, but the video assistants don't feel as though there was enough in the challenge to award a spot-kick.
37' Ocampos is furious after going over in the penalty area - seemingly due to a clumsy challenge from Alaba. The referee is unconvinced, however, as he urges play to continue.
36' Mendy shows his technical ability, executing a couple of nifty tricks in order to dribble away from three markers in midfield, before finding Modric - prompting a raucous cheer from the crowd.
M. Acuña
Yellow Card
Sevilla
33' Acuna steps on the ankle of Carvajal immediately after the restart and earns himself a yellow card for the infringement.
K. Benzema
Goal
Real Madrid
32' BENZEMA GETS MADRID LEVEL! 1-1! It’s a fortunate goal for the hosts as Militao whacks a powerful shot towards goal from more than 30 years out, which the goalkeeper can only deal with by pushing the ball onto the post. The rebound comes back out to the edge of the six-yard box for Benzema, who gets to it first - turning the ball into the empty net!
31' WHAT A STRIKE FROM OCAMPOS! DENIED BY THE BAR! The winger gets onto the ball and shimmies past Casemiro with style - sending the midfielder to the ground in the process. He then opens his body up and hits a lovely curling effort with the side of his foot that looks to beat Courtois - only to see the shot smack off the crossbar and out!
29' Sevilla are in no hurry to put the ball into the penalty area as they attack down the left via Acuna, before turning back and keeping possession in midfield. The ball eventually goes all the way back to Bounou as the visitors look to keep their opponents chasing.
27' Acuna’s cross from the left is met by the head of Mir - who can only flick it back for a team-mate. Ocampos drives towards the post looking to turn it home but Courtois is quicker in mind and foot, getting to the loose ball first.
26' Modric, Kroos and Mendy work a nice triangle on the left corner of the Sevilla penalty area, but the Croatia international gives the ball away disappointingly during an attempt to centre a pass for Benzema.
24' Acuna’s cross is sent to the far post looking for Kounde but the full-back is unable to hit the cross accurately as it flies out harmlessly for a goal-kick.
23' Alaba gives away a silly foul on the right wing after taking down Ocampos, giving Sevilla a free-kick in great position for a cross.
21' Carlos sprays a lovely pass over the top of both the midfield and the defence for Mir to latch onto, which he does with aplomb ahead of Mendy. Unfortunately for Sevilla however - the striker was unable to hold his line as the fourth official’s flag goes up for offside.
19' Casemiro brings Jordan down cynically with a bodycheck, causing a bit of a fracas just outside of Bounou’s penalty area. Rakitic and Fernando come across to have words with the Brazil international - though the referee sees no need to brandish a card at this time.
18' Ancelotti’s side have been extremely sloppy at the back, allowing Mir a free header from a set-piece for the first goal before almost doubling their advantage after a sloppy giveaway from the right-back. It won’t be easy for the hosts to get themselves level as Sevilla have only allowed nine goals in 14 games; which leads the division.
16' Alaba has a strike from a very long way out, setting himself ahead of Rakitic before firing a left-footed effort which sails harmlessly wide of Bounou’s goal.
14' OFF THE LINE! Carvajal gives the ball away to Mir inside the Madrid penalty area, allowing the striker to attempt to round Courtois before slotting it into the empty net. It would have been 2-0, if not for the intervention of Alaba, who was there on the line to clear the certain goal.
M. Acuña
Assist
Sevilla
12' Acuna's first corner may have been slightly inaccurate, but his follow-up effort is inch-perfect as he finds Mir for the assist on Sevilla's opening goal.
Rafa Mir
Goal
Sevilla
12' SEVILLA TAKE THE LEAD! 1-0! It’s a surprisingly simple goal for the visitors as Acuna’s second corner in quick succession finds Mir completely unmarked 12 yards from goal. The striker has time to shape his body and aim his header to the far post - where it beats a diving Courtois!
11' Acuna takes a Sevilla corner from the left looking for a team-mate at the far post, but it’s cleared by Militao before Vinicius turns it behind for a second corner.
9' Kroos sprays a delightful pass out to the right wing for Carvajal, whose cross isn’t dealt with convincingly by Carlos. Vinicius latches onto the loose ball but a wayward first-time effort fails to trouble Bounou.
7' Courtois is almost caught in possession after a Militao backpass puts the keeper in a spot of bother - but a desperate kick out to the right wing is kept in by Carvajal.
5' Rakitic blasts a shot from a long way out after Ocampos’ cross is blocked by Militao but the former Barcelona midfielder fails to put his effort anywhere near the target.
3' Real Madrid look comfortable in the early stages controlling the ball in midfield - shifting it from left to right as they look for an opening to penetrate Bounou’s penalty area.
1' Sevilla get the match underway from the kick-off!
Sevilla make two changes from the XI that tied Deportivo Alaves last time out. Rakitic replaces Torres in midfield, while the veteran Gomez gets a start over Idrissi.
Just one change for Real Madrid from their 4-1 win over Granada last weekend, with Militao coming into the defence to replace Nacho.
SEVILLA SUBS: Karim Rekik, Marko Dmitrovic, Oussama Idrissi, Oliver Torres, Ludwig Augustinsson, Javi Diaz, Nemanja Gudelj, Munir El Haddadi, Thomas Delaney, Ivan Romero, Oscar Rodriguez.
SEVILLA XI (4-3-3): Yassine Bounou; Gonzalo Montiel, Jules Kounde, Diego Carlos, Marcos Acuna; Joan Jordan, Fernando, Ivan Rakitic; Lucas Ocampos, Rafa Mir, Alejandro Gomez.
REAL MADRID SUBS: Jesus Vallejo, Nacho, Marcelo, Andriy Lunin, Federico Valverde, Luka Jovic, Lucas Vazquez, Isco, Mariano, Luis Lopez, Antonio Blanco, Eduardo Camavinga.
REAL MADRID XI (4-3-3): Thibaut Courtois; Ferland Mendy, David Alaba, Eder Militao, Dani Carvajal; Toni Kroos, Casemiro, Luka Modric; Vinicius Junior, Karim Benzema, Marco Asensio.
With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, let’s take a look at the team news - starting with our hosts!
A win today for Julen Lopetegui’s side would see them overtake their opponents and occupy top spot after 14 matches - thanks in part to a six-match undefeated streak that has seen the Rojiblancos win four of those ties. Usually known for their attacking prowess, Sevilla’s success so far this year has come from defensive solidity; keeping two clean sheets in their last three matches and allowing a league-low nine goals.
The league leaders have the chance to go four points clear of second-place Real Sociedad after the Basque side were beaten by Espanyol earlier today. Undefeated in their last five LaLiga matches - winning four in that time - Carlo Ancelotti’s side also lay claim to the most potent attack in Spain, averaging almost 2.5 goals per match.
