That concludes our coverage of the Bundesliga fixture between RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich! We hope you’ve enjoyed it!
Leipzig continue a tough run of fixtures midweek in a Champions League tie against Manchester City, before a trip to face Cologne next weekend. Bayern Munich also take part in the Champions League this week as they face Barcelona on Tuesday before returning home to play Bochum in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
A fantastic performance from Bayern Munich sees the visitors score four en-route to a comfortable 4-1 victory against RB Leipzig at Red Bull Arena. Lewandowski’s early penalty put pressure on the hosts immediately and forced the hosts to come out and attack - leading to an end-to-end contest. An injury to Gnabry late in the first half meant Musiala’s introduction as an enforced substitute - which changed the match entirely. A goal and an assist from the Germany international in less than 10 minutes after the restart effectively ended the match as a contest, though Leipzig managed to steal one back just four minutes after going down 3-0, when Laimer’s unbelievable hit beat Neuer at the top corner. A late Choupo-Moting goal put a bow on the tie and gave Nagelsmann an overwhelming victory against his former side. Bayern sit second, while Leipzig drop to 13.
90' + 4' FULL-TIME: RB LEIPZIG 1-4 BAYERN MUNICH.
90' + 3' The fourth official indicates four minutes will be added to the end of the match for stoppages.
J. Kimmich
Assist
90' + 2' Kimmich's inch-perfect pass is the asst for Bayern's fourth goal of the match.
E. Choupo-Moting
Goal
90' + 2' 4-1 BAYERN MUNICH! Choupo-Moting gets himself onside intelligently after a giveaway in midfield sees Kimmich reclaim possession - before an incisive pass put between Simakan and Gvardiol finds the striker on the edge of the penalty area. From there, a simple finish beats the stranded keeper as the visitors continue their dominant display.
89' WHAT A SAVE FROM GULACSI! Davies is allowed to bomb down the left, beating Haidara before putting a low cross into the penalty area for Sabitzer. The midfielder makes good contact with his first-time effort but the goalkeeper spreads himself instinctively to keep the score 3-1.
87' Szoboszlai swings the free-kick in from the left and it sails dangerously across the face of goal, but a lack of team-mates in the area means Upamecano can watch it roll behind.
86' Sabitzer is called for tripping Simakan during a duel for the ball on the left touchline. The former Leipzig player is furious but he has no case as contact was clear.
85' Forsberg stands over the dead ball but it’s Nkunku who curls it looking for the far post - missing his target narrowly as it flies behind for a goal-kick.
83' Poulsen is pushed over just outside Bayern’s penalty area by Musiala, who concedes a free-kick in a dangerous position.
82' RB Leipzig have won only one of a total of 10 Bundesliga games against Bayern Munich and are winless in six games since that 2-1 home win in March 2018 (D4, L2); the Saxons are currently waiting longer for a Bundesliga victory only against Borussia Dortmund (7).
L. Klostermann
W. Orban
80' Klostermann is sent on to freshen up the legs in defence as Orban is recalled to the bench.
79' Kimmich's flat delivery from a free-kick 25 yards out fails to find Upamecano and Sule as it's volleyed out for a throw-in by Simakan.
77' Leipzig again come forward but Mukiele’s poor pass into the penalty area for Forsberg is intercepted and booted out of play by Sule.
J. Stanišić
T. Müller
75' Muller also makes way, with Stanisic chosen to see out the remainder of the match.
N. Süle
B. Pavard
75' Nagelsmann looks to shore up the defence with 15 minutes remaining, as Sule is brought on for Pavard.
75' Leipzig are furious as the referee awards Bayern Munich a free-kick after Haidara is called for a push in Sabitzer’s back during a high press. Poulsen is furious with the referee but the call will stand as the visitors receive a free-kick in their own half.
73' Three points after three games means the worst start to a season in RB Leipzig's Bundesliga history and, for Jesse Marsch, the worst start of any RB manager in the top-flight.
Y. Poulsen
André Silva
71' Leipzig make a change at striker as they search for a way back into the match. It’s Silva who’s withdrawn - to be replaced by Poulsen.
70' Another chance for Leipzig is wasted as Kampl breaks into the penalty area and cuts it back for Forsberg. The midfielder steps up and wires a shot towards goal, but it takes a touch off of the shoulder of Nkunku and goes behind for a goal-kick.
68' Kimmich delivers the free-kick to Musiala at the near post, who gets a touch to the ball to flick it on. Upamecano goes up for the header but he’s beaten to it as Leipzig clear the danger.
67' Simakan steps across with intent and takes Musiala down on the right touchline, in-line with the penalty area. It’s a free-kick for Bayern which Kimmich will take.
65' The match is poised nicely with 25 minutes remaining, as Leipzig’s goal has given them a touch of confidence. It’ll take quite the effort to overturn a two-goal deficit deep into the second half, but a side with this much attacking quality should not be taken lightly, even by the German champions.
63' SO CLOSE TO ANOTHER GOAL! Nkunku plays creator as he controls a pass out to the wing with skill before playing a right-footed pass across the face of goal for Silva, who is unable to direct it home at the far post!
61' RB Leipzig coach Marsch faced Bayern Munich in the Champions League in 2020/21 as manager of Red Bull Salzburg and suffered his heaviest defeat in charge of the club, losing 2-6 in the group stage at home. FCB also won the reverse fixture by a 3-1 scoreline.
A. Haïdara
K. Laimer
59' Laimer is removed immediately after his spectacular goal, with Haidara the man sent on in his place.
M. Sabitzer
L. Goretzka
59' Sabitzer is sent on for his Bayern Munich debut - against his old club. He'll replace Goretzka.
E. Choupo-Moting
R. Lewandowski
59' Choupo-Moting replaces Lewandowski a minute before the hour, giving the Poland international some rest.
E. Forsberg
Dani Olmo
58' Olmo will play no further part in the match as Forsberg comes in to replace him.
J. Gvardiol
Angeliño
58' Gvardiol replaces Angelino at left-back as Marsch looks to shore up his defence.
K. Kampl
Assist
58' Kampl found his midfield partner in space - providing him with the necessary time to hit the shot. As a result, it's Kampl who receives credit for the assist.
K. Laimer
Goal
58' WHAT AN INCREDIBLE STRIKE TO MAKE IT 3-1! What a match this is turning out to be as Leipzig get one back through individual brilliance! Laimer picks the ball up well outside the penalty area and blazes a strike which beats the outstretched palm of Neuer to the top corner! It’s a superbly hit ball that gave the goalkeeper no chance!
56' Nagelsmann certainly won’t be happy with the reason for Musiala’s introduction, but there’s no doubt the promising young star has made an impact straight away, scoring and assisting in the 11 minutes he’s been on the pitch.
J. Musiala
Assist
54' Musiala has had an almost immediate effect, providing the assist for Sane's goal just six minutes after scoring himself.
L. Sané
Goal
54' BAYERN MAKE IT 3-0! Lewandowski starts the move by playing Musiala into the penalty area, where the Germany international has the presence of mind to square the ball instead of hitting it himself. The chipped cross meets Sane at the far post - who turns it into the open goal!
53' A great chance for Leipzig goes begging as a cross to the far post is met by Mukiele, who volleys it back across the face of goal - just behind both Nkunku and Silva. Bayern spring on the counter-attack and go up the other end but Lewandowski is stopped from 10-yards out by an alert Gulacsi! End to end action!
51' SILVA SCORED BUT HE’S OFFSIDE! Olmo plays a beautiful pass through the heart of the defence for the striker, who beats Upamecano to the ball and slots it past Neuer, but the lineman’s flag is raised immediately as Silva was unable to stay in an onside position. After a VAR intervention the call is upheld and the goal is chalked off. It remains 2-0.
49' Angelino curls a free-kick to the far post looking for the head of Mukiele, but the imposing combination of Goretzka and Lewandowski manage to scramble away from the goal.
A. Davies
Assist
47' The left-back makes his mark on the match with a great assist, finding Musiala inside the penalty area with time and space.
J. Musiala
Goal
47' MUSIALA MAKES IT 2-0! Bayern get some insurance immediately after the restart as Davies’ chip into the penalty area is met by a strong left-foot volley from Musiala, who beats Gulacsi and sends it into the far corner!
46' Leipzig get the match restarted from the kick-off!
An inability to pick the lock in and around the Bayern Munich penalty area has condemned Leipzig to a goalless first half. Despite the attacking quality on the pitch, Silva and company have been rather ineffective in the build-up, allowing Bayern’s defence a bit of comfort. The pressing and harrying of Poulsen could cause the visitors a mistake in the back line, while the introduction of Forsberg could help break down the wall ahead of Neuer. For Nagelsmann, an early injury to Gnabry will put a dampener on things, though he still has ex-Leipzig midfielder Sabitzer as well as the serviceable Choupo-Moting to call upon should changes need to be made.
An entertaining first half at the Red Bull Arena comes to a close with Bayern Munich leading their opponents 1-0, thanks to an early penalty won after VAR confirmed a handball inside the penalty area by Kampl. Lewandowski’s confident dispatch gave the visitors a deserved lead, which they were unable to add to despite coming close on a couple of occasions. Leipzig were stifled by Bayern’s efficient closing around the penalty area, as Olmo and Szoboszlai were kept largely at bay as Neuer had little to do, making just two saves.
45' + 2' HALF-TIME: RB LEIPZIG 0-1 BAYERN MUNICH.
45' + 1' The fourth official indicates two minutes will be added to the end of the half for stoppages.
J. Musiala
S. Gnabry
45' + 1' Confirmation of the enforced change as Gnabry won't make it to half-time, with Nagelsmann sending Musiala on in his place.
45' GREAT SAVE! Olmo leans back and has a strike at goal from 18 yards out, which forces Neuer into a diving stop, pushing the ball up and over the bar.
43' Worrying signs at the end of the first half for Bayern, as Gnabry is down on the pitch deep in conversation with two members of the medical staff. The injury appears to have come after a knee-on-knee collision with Angelino, which to be fair didn’t look painful at the time.
41' Lewandowski looks to catch Simakan in possession just outside of the Leipzig penalty area, but a shove to the shoulder of the defender sends him to the turf in a heap - forcing the referee to award the hosts a free-kick.
39' Nkunku looks to float a cross into the penalty area for Silva, but a deflection on the delivery from Upamecano allows Pavard to whack it away with a first-time volley.
37' The free-kick is swung in smartly by Leipzig, as the delivery finds the head of Simakan, who prods it across the face of goal for Silva. The striker manages to get to the ball first but his weak effort is easily saved by Neuer.
36' Simakan is lucky to escape without a booking after catching the top of Goretzka’s foot with his studs during a sliding challenge for the ball. There wasn’t intent to hurt the Bayern midfielder, but it’s a reckless tackle nonetheless.
35' ANGELINO MISSES THE TARGET! Kampl’s cross from the right takes a touch off of the head of Upamecano before falling kindly at the far post for the left-back, who takes a touch to set himself before firing a wild volley that misses the frame of the goal entirely.
34' Kimmich’s corner is met by the head of Goretzka, who’s unable to do much more than pop it back up into the air - allowing Leipzig’s defenders to converge and scramble away the danger.
32' Simakan’s heavy touch allows Muller to steal the ball from off the foot of the centre-back in midfield, starting Bayern Munich off on an attack that ends in a corner after the defender made amends by poking it behind - dispossessing Gnabry.
30' Muller’s outstretched leg catches the calf of Simakan, who is sent to the ground in a heap as Leipzig are given a free-kick in midfield.
28' Lewandowski feeds Pavard, sending him down the right with a leading pass but the full-back’s cross into the penalty area is a poor one that allows Gulacsi to gather comfortably.
26' CLOSE! Kimmich delivers and, for a moment, Lewandowski looks set to get his head on it - but he jumped slightly early. Nevertheless, Bayern keep the pressure alive and Sane tries his luck from range, with Gulacsi gratefully seeing it go past the post.
25' Great harrying from Lewandowski! The goalscorer presses Simakan in towards the corner flag, robs him and then wins a free-kick out on the right.
24' A decent move from the hosts as Szoboszlai and Nkunku link up nicely in the middle, before the latter finds Angelino on the left. His clipped cross is aimed towards the back post, but Silva is out-jumped by Upamecano.
22' Kampl tries to make amends for his earlier error as the ball falls nicely for him about 25 yards yard, but his drive is straight at Neuer, who makes a fairly easy save.
20' RB Leipzig have averaged just 0.7 points per game against Bayern in the Bundesliga – against no other team they’ve faced at least three times do they have a lower average.
18' Leipzig aren't having much luck finding dangerous avenues in attack at the moment. Silva goes chasing a long ball on this occasion, though Upamecano does well to shepherd it out of play.
16' Back come Bayern again. This time Sane finds Gnabry on the right, he cuts in and lets fly with his left. Simakan is in the way and then Goretzka's follow-up effort goes harmlessly wide.
14' Bayern are straight back on the front foot as a cross is deflected behind for a corner, but Kimmich's delivery is quickly cleared.
R. Lewandowski
Penalty Goal
12' GOAL!!!! BAYERN TAKE THE LEAD! As soon as Lewandowski stepped up to the spot, few inside the stadium will have expected anything less. He coolly slotted his kick to the right, giving the visitors an early lead.
11' PENALTY GIVEN! Bayern have a wonderful chance to open the scoring. The referee went over the check the monitor and deemed Kampl to have been guilty of handball as he stooped to intercept.
9' Leipzig could be in trouble here. Kevin Kampl appears to have handled the ball in the box and it's going to a VAR check...
8' A fortunate escape for Leipzig! Lewandowski managed to win a corner and he almost turned in the following delivery, which was missed by Silva. However, the Polish striker just couldn't direct the fierce cross on target.
6' Lovely, fluid play by Leipzig as Silva cushions a lofted pass down for Olmo with his head, and he feeds Angelino in down the left. Unfortunately, his subsequent delivery goes straight into the hands of Neuer.
5' There's a lttle flash point there as Upamecano pushes Silva out of play and the Portugal striker reacts. He shoves the former Leipzig man back and the officials have to intervene.
3' It's been a positive start from the hosts, with Bayern's defence put under a bit of pressure, but an early penalty shout is ignored after a cross is blocked by a black shirt.
1' And we're under way in Leipzig!
Nagelsmann makes two changes from the Bayern XI that beat Hertha Berlin 5-0 in the Bundesliga. Hernandez gets a start at centre-back over Sule, while Sane replaces Musiala on the wing.
Leipzig make four changes from the XI that lost 1-0 to Wolfsburg before the international break. Klostermann is dropped to the bench in favour of Mukiele at right-back, while Kampl and Laimer are chosen to patrol midfield over Haidara and Adams. The final change comes in attack, where Olmo is preferred to Forsberg behind the striker.
BAYERN MUNICH SUBS: Jamal Musiala, Josip Stanisic, Malik Tillman, Sven Ulreich, Bouna Sarr, Tanguy Kouassi, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Niklas Sule, Marcel Sabitzer.
BAYERN MUNICH XI (4-3-3): Manuel Neuer; Benjamin Pavard, Dayot Upamecano, Lucas Hernandez, Alphonso Davies; Joshua Kimmich, Thomas Muller, Leon Goretzka; Serge Gnabry, Robert Lewandowski, Leroy Sane.
RB LEIPZIG SUBS: Tyler Adams, Lukas Klostermann, Brian Brobbey, Josep Martinez, Yussuf Poulsen, Emil Forsberg, Benjamin Henrichs, Amadou Haidara, Josko Gvardiol.
RB LEIPZIG XI (4-3-3): Peter Gulacsi; Angelino, Mohamed Simakan, Willi Orban, Nordi Mukiele; Konrad Laimer, Kevin Kampl; Dominik Szoboszlai, Dani Olmo, Christopher Nkunku; Andre Silva.
With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, let’s take a look at how the two sides are lining up - starting with our hosts!
Reunions aplenty in this match as Julian Nagelsmann visits his old side for the first time since making the move to Bayern, with both Dayot Upamecano and Marcel Sabitzer also going up against their former club. A lethargic opening day draw to Borussia Monchengladbach was put right by two successive league victories, as well as a 12-0 thrashing of Bremer in the cup. Despite the good run of form it won’t be an easy trip for Bayern Munich, who also have a Champions League tie with Barcelona coming up next week.
Last year’s runners-up Leipzig welcome the champions to the Red Bull Arena looking to beat Bayern for the first time since a narrow 2-1 win in 2018. A tough start under new coach Jesse Marsch has seen the team lose two of their first three matches 1-0, either side of a 4-0 hammering of Stuttgart. Tipped as potential favourites to push Bayern to the final match week, the hosts will need a win or risk falling seven points behind early.
