Commentary

FULL TIME! Atletico scrape their way to a 1-1 draw against Rayo, meaning that Simeone's men stand in reasonably good stead for the second leg of this Copa del Rey clash! Nacho opened the scoring in the first half, before some changes from the visitors ushered in an equaliser from Saul. That's all that we have time for, we hope to see you again next time.
T. Partey
Yellow Card
Atlético Madrid
Partey picks up a late booking for a cynical foul, which could have been awarded as a result of an accumulation of decisions.
We're into the first of two minutes of stoppage time.
Embarba races down the left-hand side at full speed, before cutting back a low cross from the byline! With Manucho looking to slide in and find a finish, Moya clutches the ball ahead of the Rayo striker.
Manucho holds the ball up well, before Caballero whips a cross in towards the back post. Siqueira rises well to head clear, as Rayo try to force the issue late on. Yet another delivery is pumped into the Atleti box from Quini, but Gamez is on hand this time to head away. Suddenly, it is the visitors who are weathering a storm, with Pablo Hernandez failing to hit the target.
Jozabed does brilliantly to disposses Partey, just as the ex-Almeria midfielder looked to threaten at the edge of the penalty box. Rayo respond by trying to break down the right-hand side. Caballero chops in from out wide and puts the ball on his left foot, but the substiutes can only arrow a shot way beyond the far upright!
We're into the final five minutes, with Simeone urging his players on relentlessly! A deep cross is whipped in by Partey, but a cut back from Carrasco is hacked away by a Rayo defender! This contest is incredibly stretched at this point in proceedings.
Partey fires over with the aid of a deflection, as Atleti continue to load the box with navy shirts! Moments later, Juan Carlos pulls off a stunning save once again! Carrasco dribbles his way into the box and tries to round the goalkeeper, but the Rayo shot-stopper toes the ball away with his outstretched leg!
GREAT SAVE FROM JUAN CARLOS! Carrasco whips a lovely free-kick delivery towards the far post, with the ball flicked on its way! It finds its way to the raised boot of Siqueira! That could be a vital stop in this tie!
Adri Embarba
Bebé
Rayo Vallecano
Embarba replaces Bebe, as Jemez looks to freshen things up in the final 10 minutes.
Chechu Dorado
Yellow Card
Rayo Vallecano
Dorado leaves Gamez sprawled on the turf, after a tired and laboured tackle. He didn't even need to check if he was getting a booking.
Atleti are continuing with their 4-4-2 shape, despite grabbing the equaliser that they desperately needed. Rayo have managed to get back into their stride since Saul's goal, but it is still more than possible for Jemez's men to ship another before the final whistle.
Rayo hit the crossbar! A looping header from the edge of the area looks to catch Moya off guard! Caballero has only been on the pitch for a matter of seconds, but already has the woodwork rocking! Heart-in-mouth moment for the away outfit, there.
J. Martínez
Fernando Torres
Atlético Madrid
Martinez replaces Torres up top for the visitors, with the ex-Porto striker able to offer a little more physicality and firepower in the fianl third. The captain's armband is passed over.
Jonhatan Montiel

Rayo Vallecano
Miku takes his leave for the home side, with Caballero given the last quarter of an hour as a chance to prove himself to his coach.
Only a quarter of an hour remains for Simeone's men to fight their way into a late lead, but Los Colchoneros would be content to take a 1-1 draw into the second leg at the Calderon. Jemez is looking to chop and change a little bit, as the hosts ideally would need another goal to give them a strong fighting chance later in the month.
Nacho whips in a free-kick delivery from wide on the right flank, after a foul from Saul. The left-back tees up a teammate on the edge of the penalty box, but a hammered strike is blocked with ease. Rayo are keeping their heads above water well, but Atleti look much more dangerous on the break now.
Saúl
Yellow Card
Atlético Madrid
Saul drags Pablo Hernandez to the turf, just as the ex-Swansea wide man looked as though he was going to scramble his way into a crossing position. A deserved caution.
Less than 20 minutes are on the clock in Vallecas, with Rayo trying to scramble all hands to the pump. Jemez's men have fought back since the equaliser and threaten from a corner on the left-hand side, but Atleti clear their lines in complicated fashion. Pablo Hernandez manages to scamper his way towards the edge of the box, but is fouled.
Suddenly, Rayo might have to worry about this game turning viciously on its head. The hosts do respond with a dangerous cross in from the right flank, but a flicked header from Miku is gathered up ahead of Manucho by Moya! Savic did just enough to put off his man.
Saúl
Goal
Atlético Madrid
GOOOOOOOOOOAL! SAUL MAKES IT 1-1! The substitute is picked out in acres of space in the Rayo penalty area, but only needs one touch to steer a low finish inside the right-hand post! Simeone's substitutions have definitely made a difference here tonight!
Atleti threaten down the left-hand side, but an eventual cut back from the byline is cleared by Dorado! Vital intervention from the Spaniard, as Vietto was lurking!
Quini
Zhang Chengdong
Rayo Vallecano
Jemez makes his first change of the evening, with a rather tired Zhang leaving the field. Quini is a like-for-like replacement at right-back.
Manucho chops in from the right flank, before blasting yet another disappointing effort high and wide of Moya's goal. Rayo generate another chance moments later, with Llorente clipping a cross into Manucho, but again the Angolan's touch lets him down. With Guerra up top, the hosts may well have extended their lead beyond merely one goal.
Important sliding intervention from Dorado! The ex-Villarreal defender manages to get a toe to a clearance, denying Vietto from bearing down on Juan Carlos! Rayo respond with an attack down the left flank of their own. Nacho curls a dangerous delivery towards the penalty spot, but Manucho can only send a looping header into the stands!
We're into the final half an hour in Vallecas, with Jemez's men still looking very capable of keeping a clean sheet this evening. Atleti load the box once again for another free-kick opportunity, but the referee penalises Partey for challenging with a slightly high foot. Saul picked the loose ball up, but was flagged offside anyhow.
Atleti are trying to up the tempo and force the issue, with Kranevitter now sitting in midfield. Partey has come a little bit deeper, with Vietto left to partner Vietto up top. A change of system for the visitors, with Torres finally having a pacier partner to try and release in behind enemy lines.
L. Vietto
A. Fernández
Atlético Madrid
Augusto trudges off following a disappointing debut, with Vietto injected into the fray. The ex-Racing Club striker should offer more pace in behind to stretch this Rayo back four.
Nacho is forced to lash a sliced clearance over his crossbar, following a teasing delivery from the left-hand side! It results in a corner, with Siqueira able to pick up the scraps on the edge of the box. The Brazilian left-back charges into the area and tries to claim for a penalty, but the referee isn't interested at all.
Saúl
Óliver Torres
Atlético Madrid
Saul comes into the game for Oliver, with the latter not really having a bit influence on proceedings this evening.
Atleti win themselves a corner on the right-hand side, after a hurried clearance from Zhang. Carrasco whips the delivery into the box, which is once again met by Gimenez, but the Uruguayan defender can't turn his header goalwards! In the aftermath, the visiting defender has a few choice words for his marker Llorente.
Carrasco tries to release Siqueira down the left-hand side, but once again the pass into the left-back's pass is overcooked. Atleti are looking more dangerous now, but still their execution in the final third is lacking. Martinez is warming up for the away side already.
Siqueira combines with Torres and overlaps down the left-hand side, before the Brazilian takes a terrible touch to knock the ball straight behind for a Rayo goal kick. Atleti are seeing much more of the ball in the early stages of the second half, with Simeone looking more upbeat.
Partey causes some problems down the left-hand side, with the ex-Almeria man bustling through a few challenges. Dorado covers across to lash a rushed clearance away, however. Kranevitter tries to angle a back-post cross towards Oliver, but Juan Carlos climbs above the Atleti midfielder to punch clear.
There have been no changes at the break, but both sides are quickly very combative. Rayo might be anticipating something of an early resurgence from Atleti. Carrasco wins a free kick on the left-hand side, but the Belgian's delivery is cleared away from the danger zone by Llorente.
We are back underway in the second half in the capital! Rayo have a 1-0 lead, which would be a fantastic result for Jemez's men to take to Estadio Vicente Calderon for the second leg. Simeone will have had some fiery words at the break, one would imagine.
HALF TIME! Rayo go into the break with a 1-0 lead over Atleti, with Simeone's men failing to get going whatsoever! Nacho's wonder strike has given the hosts the advantage for now, with Jemez's side looking much more comfortable in possession and when creating opportunities. The away side need to improve, and quickly.
HUGE CHANCE FOR LLORENTE! The Rayo defender rises brilliantly to meet a great corner delivery from the right-hand side, but can only place a tame header straight down Moya's throat! Either side of the Atleti goalkeeper and that would have been 2-0!
Miku angles a dangerous cross in from the right-hand side, after yet another good break forward from the Venezuelan. Gimenez, however, recovers nicely to hack a sliding clearance away from Manucho. The Uruguay international concedes a corner in the process, but Partey heads the resulting delivery away. After two good chances for the away outfit, Rayo are responding with some pressure of their own!
Great save from Juan Carlos! Oliver manages to squeeze a lovely cross in towards the near post, with Carrasco taking a first-time shot in his stride! The ball threatens to creep inside the near post, but Rayo's goalkeeper turns a save around his post! The resulting corner is clipped in nicely by Augusto, but Gimenez can only plant a back-post header wide of the target! Life from Simeone's men!
Atleti whip a couple of good balls in from the right flank, but Juan Carlos is easily equal to both of them. Rayo are looking fairly confident, with the travelling support needing to roar their players into action. The visitors just haven't got out of second gear yet, with even Nacho's goal failing to stirr Los Colchoneros from their slumber.
Manucho is picked out by a low cross from the left-hand side by Nacho! With the Angola international threatening to take a touch and break into the box, Gimenez puts enough pressure on his man. The Rayo striker fails to bring the ball under his spell and Atleti breathe a sigh of relief. A two-goal advantage for the hosts would really be an issue.
The home fans are suddenly making much more noise, with Rayo definitely deserving to take the lead. Atleti try to respond with a dangerous cross in from the left flank, but Juan Carlos is able to claim the ball under no real pressure. With less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Simeone does not look a happy man at all.

GOOOOOOOOOOOAL! NACHO GIVES RAYO THE LEAD! The left-back is found in space at the edge of the penalty area, after Partey fails to clear Atleti's lines in hurried fashion. The Spaniard sets himself with his first touch, before slamming a low drive into the bottom-right corner from around 30 yards out! Moya had no chance and the hosts are 1-0 up!
Torres is the target for an early cross from deep on the right-hand side, but the terrible delivery from Gamez sails directly out of play for a goal kick. Atleti just aren't showing any quality in the final third at the moment. The same visiting striker is released by a speculative through ball moments later, but the pass skids off the turf and into Juan Carlos' awaiting arms.
Rayo have another half chance, but Manucho can't hit the target with a weak, looping header from around 12 yards out. Atleti just can't seem to carve out any opportunities, with Torres not getting a great deal of surface high up the field. If things carry on in this manner, Simeone may be forced to dip into his bench at the interval.
Fernando Torres
Yellow Card
Atlético Madrid
Torres is the next man in the book for the travelling outfit, with the former Liverpool forward penalised for a scrappy foul. Despite having his fair share of rough treatment, the Spaniard gets a card for his troubles.
Rayo play their way down the left-hand side wonderfully, with Bebe choosing to end the move with a shot from out wide. The Portuguese winger cuts onto his stronger right foot, but blazes a terrible effort high and wide of the top-right corner from the best part of 30 yards out.
Manucho is the target of a long pass down the right wing, but Moya is able to gather up Tito's attempted ball ahead of the Angolan forward. Moments later, Juan Carlos is called into action, with the Rayo shot-stopper racing off his line to hack a poor back pass away from the lurking presence of Carrasco. Clear-cut chances just aren't showing their faces at present.
Augusto is being forced to play quite deep at the moment, with the ex-Celta man definitely anchoring the Los Colchoneros' midfield. Partey has been roaming dangerously, but Carrasco and Oliver haven't been able to offer regular outlets in the wider areas. Simeone's side need to get hold of the ball, in order to give their reinforcements time to support the attack.
N. Fedor
Yellow Card
Rayo Vallecano
Miku now sees yellow for a late sliding challenge on Siqueira, with the Rayo striker not having any complaints at all for that.
Atleti are certainly on the back foot at the moment, with only Partey appearing to be capable of changing the tempo of the match in the midfield third. Kranevitter and Augusto have had some neat touches between him, but the new duo are struggling to have an immediate influence on their latest teammates.
Moya is forced to make a save at his near-post, following a well-struck free-kick attempt from Nacho! The Rayo left-back looked to catch the ex-Getafe goalkeeper out, but the Spaniard got two strong hands behind the ball to parry it some distance to safety. Rayo have definitely been on top during the last 10 minutes!
Guilherme Siqueira
Yellow Card
Atlético Madrid
Siqueira brings Miku down on the edge of the visitors' penalty area, earning the former Granada full-back the first booking of the evening.
Atleti win themselves a free kick in a dangerous area, with Carrasco whipping a dangerous ball in towards the near post! Gimenez manages to get his head to it, flicking an attempt goalwards, but Juan Carlos is confident enough to let the bouncing ball edge wide of his right-hand upright.
Torres has been the subject of some heavy-handed defending in the opening quarter of an hour, but the Spain international hasn't been getting the rub of the green in terms of refereeing decisions. Rayo are settling into their stride, with Zhang managing to fire a low cross into Miku, but the Venezuelan striker can only shoot into the side netting!
Manucho and Miku haven't been able to get hold of the ball too often thus far, with Rayo labouring with possession usually inside their own half of the field. Atleti are growing into this game now. Torres drives down the left channel and breaks into the box, but Dorado tracks back to concede a corner in timely fashion. Gimenez meets the resulting set-piece delivery, but Juan Carlos makes a simple catch.
Siqueira and Carrasco combine brilliantly down the left flank, with the two linking up with a run of lovely touches. Partey tries to cause problems as a result, with the Ghanaian midfielder found on the edge of the box, but Pablo Hernandez does well to rob the Atleti man of possession in a dangerous area of the field.
Torres is sent tumbling to the turf after a late challenge, but the Atleti captain is soon back to his feet, albeit gingerly. The referee did play on after the ex-Milan striker was fouled, but a forward-thinking pass from Carrasco narrowly evaded an overlapping Siqueira on the left-hand side. The visitors have their first half chance of the evening, but it comes in the form of a desperately poor strike from Partey.
Atleti have the chance to load the box, with Gamez launching a long throw into the penalty box from the right flank. Rayo concede a corner as a result, but the delivery is swung into a terrible area at the back post. Neither goalkeeper has had much to do so far, with chances continuing to be few and far between in the Spanish capital.
Atleti are happy to sit in and absorb some early pressure, with Simeone sure to be understanding with regard to a slow start. The visitors, after all, are playing with two debutants in the middle of the park. Augusto releases Gamez down the right-hand side, but the ex-Malaga full-back is only able to force a corner out of Tito following a neat delivery into the penalty area! The resulting set piece is punched away by Juan Carlos.
Nacho manages to win a corner on the left flank, after nutmegging Gamez brilliantly. The set piece is whipped in, but Moya is able to gather the ball up after a looping flick on. Jemez's men are looking bright on the ball, with the home outfit spending much more time with possession at their feet at the moment. Manucho is picked out by a long pass, but the ex-Man United striker's touch escapes him terribly.
Miku drives down the right-hand side for the home side, but the Venezuela international can only chop inside Savic before sending a looping shot way wide! The opening few minutes are being played at a hectic pace, with neither side able to settle down into rhythmic possession. If anything, Rayo have seen slightly more of the ball.
We are underway in the first half in Vallecas! The hosts will be looking to give their fans something to cheer about tonight, after a terrible run, while Atleti will be aiming for a realistic shot at silverware in this competition!
Atletico substitutes: Martinez, Oblak, Gabi, Correa, Saul, Hernandez, Vietto.

Rayo starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Juan Carlos; Zhang, Tito, Dorado Nacho; Llorente, Jozabed; Pablo, Miku, Bebe; Manucho.
TEAM NEWS: Moya is given the cup gloves in goal, with Guilherme Siqueira and Jesus Gamez rotating in at full-back. Diego Godin also gets a rest, with Stefan Savic featuring at centre-back. Debutees Augusto Fernandez and Matias Kranevitter start in the centre of the park, with Thomas Partey getting more first-team minutes too. Fernando Torres should be the point of the attack for Los Colchoneros.
TEAM NEWS: Juan Carlos is given the nod over Yoel in between the sticks, with Chechu Dorado continuing to get some first-team action at the expense of Ze Castro. Zhang gets a rare run out, with Jozabed featuring in midfield alongside Diego Llorente. Pablo Hernandez and Bebe should start in the wide areas, with Miku and Manucho up top.
Diego Simeone's men, meanwhile, come into this clash high on confidence. Atleti have lost merely one of their last 18 competitive fixtures, with that sole defeat coming away from home against Malaga recently. Rayo are on a totally different run of form, having failed to win in their last six outings in all competitions.
Hello and welcome to some first-leg Copa del Rey action, as Atletico Madrid make the short journey across Spain's capital city to face Rayo Vallecano! Paco Jemez's side are struggling in the league, with the hosts currently sitting two points adrift of safety in 19th place, with tonight an opportunity to forget their Primera woes.
