PSV v Atlético Madrid Live Commentary, 13/09/2016

0 - 1
Saúl (43)
Philips Stadion

So Atletico hold on to a slender win, as PSV just run out of time against the Spaniards. The home side certainly deserved at least a point and, although they did see one penalty missed, they should have had another in the second half. Nevertheless, it was Saul's first-half volley which did the damage, with PSV ultimately unable to break through the visitors' backline, with Gimenez particularly impressive.
Atletico survive! Willems' cross from the left falls kindly for Pereiro and he meets it with a header, but the midfielder's effort smashes into the ground and goes straight to Oblak. Was that their final chance?
PSV are piling men forward and constantly chucking crosses into the area, but so far Atletico are holding on. They're running out of time, as two minutes are added on.
Another excellent cross from the right, as Brenet sends a low delivery in towards the near post, which is put behind by Gimenez.
De Jong beats Godin in the air yet again, but this time the header goes well over. That's a real route to goal that the hosts have identified, though.
Good effort from the youngster Bergwijn. The attacker cuts in from the left and skips past a challenge before sending a decent effort just wide of the bottom-right corner.
You sense PSV are starting to up the ante, but Atletico are the masters of taking the sting out of teams - can they hold firm here in the final eight minutes or so?
S. Bergwijn
L. Narsingh
Another PSV switch now, as Narsingh earns a rest. Bergwijn is on in his place.
G. Pereiro
D. Schwaab
Change number three for PSV, with Schwaab now heading off and replaced by Pereiro.
Fernando Torres
Atlético Madrid
NO PENALTY! Atletico are hugely lucky here! Another delivery into the area and again De Jong beats Godin and heads the ball against his hand. Somehow the referee opts to turn a blind eye. Atletico then introduce Torres for Saul from the bench.
Sensational defending from Gimenez again. The Uruguayan looks to be initially beaten by the pace of Narsingh, but he battles back and produces an expertly timed tackle.
That's a bit better. Brenet is the one hoisting the ball into the box from out wide this time and he finds De Jong. The striker manages to beat Godin in the air and nod the ball down towards Narsingh, but Gimenez is there to hack clear.
It's all becoming a bit one-dimensional from the home side. This time Willems clips a deep cross into the box but it ultimately evaded everyone.
Let-off there for PSV. Tiago produces a fine pass in behind the defence for Griezmann and the Frenchman lashes beyond Zoet, but he had already been flagged offside. Replays show there wasn't much in it.
Brilliant footwork from Gabi, as he latches on to the ball after a heavy touch from Brenet, spins and then finds Tiago, who then returns it to the captain with a clever flick of his own. The hosts are running out of ideas.
B. Ramselaar
J. Hendrix
A switch for PSV now - Ramselaar comes on for Hendrix, who hasn't really offered a great deal.
Y. Carrasco
K. Gameiro
Atlético Madrid
And that is Gameiro's last involvement, as Carrasco takes his place.
Side-netting! Good move by the visitors, as Koke gets into the PSV half and stabs it to his right for Griezmann, who instantly lofts it over the defence for Gameiro. He is forced a little wide, but he gets a shot away nonetheless, crashing it into the side of the goal.
N. Gaitán
Atlético Madrid
First change now for Atletico, as Tiago enters in place of Gaitan, who has been a bit disappointing on the whole.
Atletico escape! Narsingh manages to nod a ball down into the area and Hendrix makes the most of hesitancy in the defence, bringing it down, getting the ball on to his right foot before then lashing over.
That's better between Gameiro and Griezmann, as the former races into the box and back-heels the ball into the path of his countryman, who sends a right-footed effort just wide.
Brilliant pass by Koke, as he somehow manages to chip a pass over a PSV midfielder with the outside of his foot. Luis races on to his and gets a first-time effort away on the stretch and his effort goes well wide.
Good play by Willems. The full-back gets up the left flank and gets a decent delivery into the box, but ultimately it is easy for Oblak.
What a chance! A lovely move from the visitors, as a quick passing interchange in attack sees Griezmann pick up possession on the edge of the box. He tries to slip a pass through to Gameiro and he manages to reach him thanks to a lucky touch off Mirin, but the striker inexplicably skies his effort over from about 14 yards out.
PSV have started the second period in bright fashion, taking the game to Atletico as often as they can. So far the visitors are holding out, though.
The free-kick is easily cleared as far as Brenet. He picks out Hendriz on the edge of the area and he goes to ground under a challenge from Godin, but the Uruguayan did appear to just about get the ball.
Good play out wide by Willems, as the left-back manages to win a free-kick from Gabi. This is a good opportunity for the hosts.
We are back under way for the second half.
The referee brings a pretty entertaining first period to a close, with Atletico holding the lead thanks to Saul's sensational strike. PSV should have equalised just before the break when Guardado saw his penalty well saved by Oblak, but in all honesty, they were very lucky to even get the decision in the first place. Plenty of intrigue surrounding this ahead of the second half, so don't go anywhere.
J. Oblak
Penalty Save
Atlético Madrid
A fine penalty from Guardado, but an even better save from Oblak, A huge moment for the visitors - they're going into the break ahead.
A. Guardado
Penalty Miss
DENIED! Guardado steps up and sees his blistering kick well saved by Oblak in the Atletico goal, with the goalkeeper pushing it away brilliantly.
J. Giménez
Yellow Card
Atlético Madrid
PENALTY FOR PSV! The home side win themselves the chance to pull level just before the break, as Gimenez is beaten by the pace of Narsingh and then trips him in the area.
There are plenty of unhappy players in the PSV ranks. They are adamant that play should have stopped, with Propper enduring a horrible clash of heads with Gimenez - the midfielder having blood streaming from his forehead.
L. de Jong
Yellow Card
Yellow card Luuk de Jong
Atlético Madrid
GOAL!!!! Atletico have the lead! What a goal! The visitors' corner results in a bit of a goalmouth scramble, with a couple of players down with head injuries. A Saul shot is well blocked and then the ball drops for him again, sitting up kindly enough for him to produce a Di Canio-esque volley into the left side of the goal.
Juanfran has been a good outlet today and again he is up the right flank, running at PSV and he wins himself a corner.
Gameiro continues to lack luck, but at least this time he links well with Griezmann, who flicks the ball into his path. The former Sevilla man then runs at Mirin and gets a left-footed shot away which goes well wide.
Crucial defending! Gaitan bends a brilliantly left-footed cross in towards the back post from the right and Gameiro looks destined for a tap-in, but Schwaab is there to prod it behind just in time.
Better from Atletico, as the visitors produce a swift move packed with first-time passes, however the attack goes nowhere, as PSV hold firm and the away side are forced to go back on themselves.
Atletico are back on the front foot up the left as Filipe Luis and Gameiro link, but the striker ultimately knocks the ball out. It's not been his day yet, the Frenchman.
Things have calmed down a little in the last few moments, but PSV are looking rather more comfortable. In truth, Zoet and their defence haven't been genuinely troubled for a while. This certainly isn't vintage Atletico.
Yellow Card
Atlético Madrid
A blatant booking there, as Moreno dribbles his way out from the back and glides past Gabi, who cynically stops the Mexican and earns a yellow card.
Poor from Gabi, as the Atletico captain cheaply gives the ball away in the defensive third. Propper is on to it in a flash and he dribbles past Koke, before then seeing his pass to De Jong cut out.
Narsingh is making himself a real nuisance. This time he produces a delightful first touch to take a lofted pass out of the air in attack. He is stood up by Gimenez and the winger initially gets the better of him, before he then takes a tumble in rather theatrical fashion. The officials aren't buying it.
Good play by Juanfran. The experienced right-back races on to a pass up the right, jinks his way past the immobile-looking Hendrix and crosses. Gameiro gets a header on target, but it's an easy save for Zoet.
Lovely pass from Gaitan, as he again plays a reverse ball in behind the defence for Griezmann. This time the Frenchman breaks free down the right and darts into the area. He slips the ball into the danger zone, but Moreno is there to mop up.
H. Moreno
Yellow Card
Godin takes a big chance! Narsingh races on to a long ball in behind the defender and eventually the centre-back nudges him over in the area. PSV are adamant they should have a penalty and Moreno then talks his way into the referee's book.
De Jong is penalised now as PSV try to escape Atletico's pressing. From the resulting kick, Koke clips the ball into the danger zone and Godin meets it with a header and the hosts get lucky, as the Uruguayan's header sails well past the post. He probably should have done better.
There is Zoet's first save of the match. The goalkeeper has to parry away Luis' stinging 30-yard drive and he does well to push it away from danger.
Good play by Gaitan, as the winger comes in from the right and looks for a reverse ball behind the defence for Griezmann, but Mirin covers well and halts the danger.
There's quite a lot of hesitancy from Atletico at the moment, particularly when playing the ball out from the back. A few times PSV have managed to charge down poor clearances and the visitors are inviting pressure on to themselves.
Just wide! Atletico are just looking to steady the ship again now after PSV's improvement. A well-worked move in the centre sees the Spaniards create space for themselves and they make their way up the left. Gaitan cuts it back and it sits kindly for Koke on the edge of the box, but it is deflected just past the post.
We have a bit of a pause here now as De Jong receives medical attention after taking an arm in the face from Godin during an aerial challenge. He'll survive.
PSV have really woken up here. The Dutch side work the ball well up the left, with Willems darting inside with his first touch and then prodding a near-perfect pass in behind Godin for Narsingh, but it is just slightly too heavy.
Goal not given! PSV have the goal in the net from the corner, as Moreno nods the ball back across the face of goal for De Jong to head in, but the officials decide there was grounds for it being disallowed. The striker looked to be level, but offside does appear to be the reason.
Desperate defending! Narsingh this time looks to make a difference at the other end, as he looks to latch on to a headed flick-on. The attacker's blistering pace sees him get beyond Godin, but Gimenez gets back brilliantly and concedes a corner.
Nearly an opening! Luis does brilliantly up the left, getting in behind the defence to latch on to Gabi's through pass, but a combination of Narsingh and Mirin just about edge the full-back out. Nearly the perfect start.
Atletico are looking to take the early control, with Simeone's men taking charge of possession and producing some crisp passing moves. PSV already look a little rocked.
Off we go in Eindhoven!
A great atmosphere greets the players as they head out of the tunnel at the PSV Stadion in Eindhoven, with utter darkness swiftly lifted just before their emergence.
The hosts will of course be hoping to avenge last season's penalties defeat and Cocu will be under no illusions as to the task ahead of his team. The coach has opted for a back five behind an energetic midfield trio and the varying talents of De Jong and Narsingh up top.
PSV proved in their meetings last season that they're no mugs, though, and Atletico will come prepared for a tough duel and Simeone has unsurprisingly named arguably his strongest and most robust starting XI, with Gimenez and Godin at centre-back, Koke, Saul and Gabi offering a range of abilities in midfield and Gaitan supporting Griezmann and Gameiro in attack.
Atletico will be many peoples' favourites today, but they've not started the domestic season in particularly sparkling form. They clinched their first win from three LaLiga matches at the weekend, though it did come in impressive fashion, blowing Celta Vigo with a four-goal show in the second half - Antoine Griezmann starring with a double.
Atletico and Diego Simeone find themselves facing PSV for the third time this year today, with Cocu's charges their first victims in the knockout phase last season. Their two-legged encounter failed to produce any goals before the Spaniards triumphed in a shoot-out, so perhaps we shouldn't be expecting a five-goal thriller here today.
