Commentary

That concludes our commentary of the Ligue 1 fixture between Paris Saint-Germain and Clermont Foot! We hope you’ve enjoyed it!
PSG travel to Belgium to face Club Brugge in the Champions League, before a tough test against Lyon next Sunday. Clermont Foot must wait eight days before their next fixture when they host Brest.
PSG wrap up a convincing performance, beating newly promoted Clermont Foot by a convincing score of 4-0. The hard work was done in the first half as Herrera’s double put the Paris-based club up two at the half, but Mbappe was not to be denied after the restart, getting onto the end of Draxler’s scooped pass before finishing into an empty net to expose a high defensive line. The France international was involved in the fourth as well, with his shot parried to the far post by Desmas for Gueye’s second of the campaign. Clermont started the match brightly but did little in the way of attack after going behind as PSG were able to hold possession quite easily, while preventing any counter-attacks that filtered through at the outset.
90' + 4' FULL-TIME: PSG 4-0 CLERMONT FOOT.
90' + 2' PSG's win will continue their perfect start to the season, as well as put them five points clear at the top of Ligue 1 ahead of the rest of the weekend's fixtures. Clermont will be disappointed in the result, but they stay third - at least for now.
90' The fourth official indicates four minutes will be added to the end of the 90 for stoppages.
88' A PSG corner from the right is swung to the far post, but it’s sent over the heads of everyone - including Diallo who is forced to sprint to the left touchline in order to keep the ball in play.
J. Iglesias
J. Gastien
86' A change for Clermont in midfield sees Iglesias replace Gastien.
Nuno Mendes
J. Draxler
86' Draxler has been involved for the final time today as his number is put up on the fourth official’s board - with newly signed full-back Mendes his replacement.
86' The ball is hit over the top for Draxler, who is a half-step behind the delivery from central midfield as Desmas is able to come off his line and claim the ball ahead of the winger.
84' Icardi breaks into Clermont’s half virtually unopposed as the striker looks to bring the ball into the penalty area but a backtracking Billong uses his strength to win the ball back 20 yards from goal before firing it forward to get his side back on the attack.
82' After a dream start to the season, the realities of Ligue 1 have hit Clermont quite hard today, going down 4-0 without putting up too much of a fight. Donnarumma hasn’t been tested nearly as often as Gastien would have liked in the goalkeeper’s debut, with a clean sheet very much on the cards.
N. Bitumazala
P. Kimpembe
80' Bitumazala is on for his PSG debut, as the youth academy prospect replaces Kimpembe.
M. Icardi
K. Mbappé
79' Mbappe's day ends with a goal as Icardi is brought on to give the striker a rest with just over 10 minutes left.
77' After a Clermont corner is scrambled away initially, the ball comes out to the left where N'Simba shapes to have a strike at goal, but it falls comfortably into the awaiting arms of Donnarumma.
75' Second highest scoring team in Ligue 1 2021-22 with nine goals just behind their opponents for this game Paris (12), Clermont are the team in Ligue 1 with the highest Expected Goals tally (8.55) while they have also attempted the most shots in the division this season (70).
J. Tell
J. Dossou
73' Clermont make changes of their own as Tell is sent on for Dossou.
J. Billong
F. Ogier
72' Substitution Florent Ogier Jean-Claude Billong
T. Kehrer
A. Hakimi
72' Hakimi gets a rest with 18 minutes left in the match as Kehrer is sent on to replace him.
E. Ebimbe
I. Gueye
72' The goal scorer is replaced as Ebimbe is sent on for Gueye.
69' Zedadka puts a good cross into the penalty area for Khaoui to attack, but Kimpembe is able to get a block to the header despite having his back turned to the man he was marking. It’s not textbook defending, but it’ll do.
67' Khaoui teases in a well-struck free-kick from the left, but Marquinhos gets to it ahead of Ogier to keep Donnarumma from being called into action.
I. Gueye
Goal
65' PSG MAKE IT 4-0! Mbappe drives towards the byline, beating Ogier for pace before firing a right-footed shot at Desmas. The keeper can only get a palm to the ball which takes it to the far post, finding Gueye in the process. The midfielder cushions a header into the bottom corner as Pochettino’s side go four goals ahead!
64' MBAPPE PUTS IT WIDE! The forward is absolutely rapid as he beats N’Simba to Gueye’s pass, before bursting into the penalty area. Desmas comes off his line as Mbappe looks to chip it over the keeper and into the empty net but he puts his effort just wide - much to Rafinha’s fury.
E. Rashani
J. Allevinah
62' Clermont Foot make two changes at once as Rashani is also introduced as Allevinah is withdrawn.
S. Khaoui
J. Berthomier
62' Berthomier is replaced by Khaoui as Gastien looks to shuffle his pack.
61' Mbappe’s step-overs do little to help as the striker’s right-footed shot hits the calf of Hountondji and dribbles slowly out for a corner, but the fourth official raises his flag as the France international was unable to keep onside in the build-up.
59' A Clermont short-corner routine is worked to Zedadka, but his speculative shot from quite some distance out is sent high over the crossbar.
57' Mbappe’s at it again as he receives a square pass from the left and makes a move to get past a defender, before hitting a low drive from 20 yards out which drags wide of the far post.
J. Draxler
Assist
55' Draxler did well to spot Clermont's high defensive line, sending a scooped pass over the top for the assist on Mbappe's goal.
K. Mbappé
Goal
55' IT’S THREE FOR PSG! Draxler hits a long pass over the top of the defence for Mbappe, who exposes the high line and gets on the end of the ball, speeding past Zedadka as he draws Desmas off his line and deposits the ball in the empty net! 3-0!
54' Not a bad idea as Bethomier looks to curl a left-footed pass around Kimpembe for the run of Hamel, but it’s cut out and put behind for a corner at the last minute by the stumbling centre-back.
52' Diallo goes on a rare foray forward and sends an early cross in for Draxler, who raises his boot high in order to control the pass but instead catches the face of a diving Hountondji . It’s a free-kick for the visitors, inside their own penalty area.
50' Dossou (Clermont) had attempted six shots after a carry in Ligue 1 2021/22 before kick-off today, which is more than any other player.
48' Clermont Foot may be down, but if recent form is anything to go by, they are certainly not out. After coming from behind on two separate occasions to earn a 3-3 draw with Lyon (including two goals in the last 10 minutes), Clermont were able to again climb out of a 2-0 hole to earn a 2-2 draw with Metz last time out.
46' PSG get the match restarted from the kick-off!
With no option other than to attack, Gastien will need to encourage his side to continue their positive play. Dossou has found joy on occasion down the right in battle with Diallo, but a lack of presence in front of goal has left Clermont Foot a bit toothless. Rashani could add to their firepower, with the Kosovo international already netting three times this season. PSG will surely look to wrap up the victory in comfort in the second half, with Pochettino potentially even afforded the opportunity to rest some starters and give youth some playing time - including the promising Bitshiabu.
An entertaining first half comes to a close at the Parc des Princes, where PSG lead convincingly through a Herrera double. Hakimi has once again been the danger man for PSG, causing havoc on the right wing and setting up the first Paris goal. Clermont Foot have done their best to stifle last years’ runners-up, but a lack of clinical finishing in front of goal has let the promoted side down. Even still Gastien’s side have reason for positivity, as both goals were scored after the ball bobbled up to Herrera fortunately inside the penalty area.
45' + 2' HALF-TIME: PSG 2-0 CLERMONT FOOT.
45' The fourth official indicates two minutes will be added to the end of the first half for stoppages.
43' The hosts will be hoping for a late goal, giving them something to cling onto as the half-time whistle approaches. It hasn't been a poor showing from the visitors, but the gulf in quality is clear - despite many first-team names missing for Pochettino's side.
41' A clever pass from midfield puts Hamel in a position to get inside the penalty area, but Marquinhos uses his experience to get in front of the striker, beating his opponent to the ball.
39' With two wins and two draws, Clermont became the first team to remain unbeaten in their first four games ever in Ligue 1 since Guingamp in 1995/96 (five games).
37' Gastien and Berthomier both stand over the free-kick but it’s the latter who hits it, sending his left-footed effort disappointingly into the wall as PSG can breathe easy once again.
35' Gueye bodychecks Samed and gives away a free-kick just outside PSG’s penalty area. Can the visitors trouble Donnarumma from here?
33' Not known for his consistent goal scoring, Herrera’s double has given PSG a lead and some insurance with just under 15 minutes left in the first half. It’s the midfielder’s first-ever double for PSG and his third of the season so far.
Ander Herrera
Goal
31' HERRERA’S AT IT AGAIN! 2-0! Marquinhos sprays a long ball over the top for Mbappe, who latches onto it before dancing around N’Simba to win space on the right. The eventual cross is initially repelled by Ogier, but it only falls as far as Herrera at the penalty spot, who taps it home easily!
30' Gastien tees up Allevinah with a square ball across the edge of the box but the winger’s left-footed strike at the first time of asking is dragged well-wide of the target.
28' Brilliant work from Dossou on the right, who gets the better of Diallo before sending a teasing ball into the six-yard box for Hamel, who is unable to reach it despite a late slide.
26' Gueye releases Mbappe with an incisive pass that cuts through the heart of midfield, but after putting the ball onto his right foot the striker is unable to get much purchase on his shot - sending the low curler softly into the arms of Desmas.
24' PSG COME CLOSE TO A SECOND! Again Hakimi is at the centre of the action, with the right-back strolling into the penalty area before sending a disguised pass to the penalty spot for a team-mate. Pereira steps up and hits a venomous strike but a sliding Zedadka makes a crucial block!
22' There was a lengthy delay in the aftermath of the goal as there were questions about Mbappe’s position during the goal - with the striker potentially straying offside. After the VAR intervention, the match official does not receive word of any infringement, as the goal is allowed to stand!
Ander Herrera
Goal
20' HERRERA MAKES IT 1-0! Hakimi turns N’Simba inside-out on the right wing and fires a low cross into the penalty area, which a diving Desmas can only parry instinctively with a hand. The rebound loops up kindly to Herrera, who powers his header into the empty net!
19' PSG have not lost any of their last 28 home games against newly promoted side in Ligue 1 (W26 D2), winning the most recent 15, while last losing to such an opponent in May 2010 against Montpellier (1-3).
17' Dossou gets into the penalty area and puts a low cross into the centre, which is repelled by Marquinhos. The ball falls to the edge of the 18-yard box for Gastien but his strike is also blocked, giving Clermont a throw-in deep in PSG’s half.
15' Berthomier gets two hands on Rafinha and drags him to the ground in midfield, preventing the winger from finding the necessary incisive pass. It’s a free-kick for PSG deep in midfield as Clermont break up the play well.
13' Dossou takes Diallo on, looking to round the centre-back but Diallo’s size and strength makes for easy work against the tricky winger, who is eased off the ball as it goes out for a goal-kick.
12' CLOSE! Mbappe scoops the free-kick cleverly over the top of the wall, finding Marquinhos free on the edge of the six-yard box. The captain does his best to put the awkward header on-target, but Desmas makes a great catch to keep the game level.
A. Zedadka
Yellow Card
10' The PSG break is on through Gueye, but Mbappe is dragged to the turf by Zedadka in cynical fashion to bring the counter-attack to a halt. It’s a yellow card for the full-back, while the hosts are awarded a free-kick 25 yards from goal.
8' Rafinha and Mbappe work a short-corner routine to get the ball to Draxler on the edge of the penalty area, but despite a free hit, the winger sends his effort high over Desmas’ crossbar.
7' Diallo steps inside and sprays a lovely pass to switch the play from left to right, finding Hakimi just outside the penalty area. The right-back drives inside and looks to centre a pass for Mbappe, but it’s intercepted at the vital moment.
5' Mbappe goes on a mazy run, twisting and turning on the edge of the penalty area but a well-timed Hountondji step wins the ball back for the visitors.
3' PSG away at the Parc des Princes will no doubt be one of the toughest tests of the season for Clermont Foot, who will be without their star striker Mohamed Bayo. The absent talisman leads the team in both goals and assists to start the year, with three and two respectively.
1' Clermont Foot get the match underway from the kick-off!
Clermont make three changes to the XI that earned a 2-2 draw with Metz. Iglesias is dropped for Samed in midfield and Allevinah is preferred to Rashani on the wing, while Hamel is chosen to replace Mohamed Bayo at striker.
PSG make six changes from their 2-0 win away at Reims before the international break. It’s a first start for Donnarumma, who replaces Navas between the posts while Kimpembe replaces Kehrer at centre-back. Marco Verratti is not involved in the squad today and Wijnaldum is dropped to the bench, allowing Danilo and Herrera to start in midfield while in attack both Lionel Messi and Neymar are absent - giving chances to Rafinha and Draxler.

With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, let's take a look at how the two sides are lining up - starting with our hosts!
Clermont Foot have looked remarkable in their first four matches in Ligue 1, with Pascal Gastien managing to continue the good form that saw his side promoted from the second division in second place last year. Having never before played in the top division, Clermont have started with incredible tenacity - winning their first two matches by 2-0 score lines before earning draws with both Lyon and Metz.
PSG are looking to make it five wins in five matches to start their domestic campaign as they welcome Clermont to the Parc des Princes. Mauricio Pochettino’s side earned their first clean sheet of the year two weeks ago in their 2-0 victory over Reims, while maintaining their impressive record of scoring at least two in each league match.
