PSG didn't play particularly well and weren't as clinical in front of goal as they usually are, but they nonetheless leave with a deserved victory after doing enough to see off a Basel side that impressed in the first half before tiring after the break. The Swiss side were defensively diligent early on and were unlucky to concede in the 40th minute, but from then onwards the home side were on the front foot and never looked like losing their lead.
FULL-TIME: PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN 3-0 BASEL
E. Cavani
Penalty Goal
PSG
90' + 3' GOAL! Cavani, who hasn't been presented with many chances tonight, steps up and calmly fires a thumping strike down the middle of the goal and into the back of the net to wrap up the victory for PSG.
90' + 2' PENALTY! Cavani skips into the left-hand side of the Basel penalty area as PSG push forward on one last attacking move, but as soon as he makes contact with the ball he's tripped over from behind by Lang, leaving the referee with no choice but to point to the spot.
90' + 1' What a chance for Jese! The Spaniard picks up the ball in acres of space over on the left-hand side of the Basel penalty area after a good build-up from the hosts, but he's unable to beat Vaclik and sends his low shot straight into the feet of the Czech goalkeeper.
90' The fourth official has indicated that there will be three minutes of added time.
89' Ben Arfa twists and turns midway inside the Basel penalty area after linking up well with Rabiot, but the substitute's attempted shot from 25 yards out is poorly hit and sails several yards over the top of the crossbar, much to the annoyance of his manager, who doesn't look too pleased.
88' Aurier flies into the right-hand side of the Basel penalty area and is almost able to latch on to a lofted pass forward, but he's put under pressure by Balanta at the vital moment and can only poke a bouncing cross into the hands of Vaclik at the near post.
86' Lang breaks down the right wing on a marauding run before swinging a dangerous cross into the middle of the PSG penalty area, where several players are waiting, but Sporar is unable to make decent contact with the ball and sends it flying over to the opposite flank.
Jesé
Á. Di María
PSG
85' Di Maria goes down off the ball holding the lower part of his back, and he eventually walks gingerly off the pitch to be replaced by Jese.
84' Rabiot breaks down the left channel on a marauding run and cuts inside before trying to pick out Cavani, who had made a good run into the penalty area, but Basel have plenty of bodies back and the midfielder's pass fails to find the Uruguayan.
G. Krychowiak
B. Matuidi
PSG
83' And now Krychowiak has come to replace Matuidi.
H. Ben Arfa
Lucas Moura
PSG
81' PSG have made a late alteration, with Lucas making way for Ben Arfa.
80' After the corner is cleared, PSG break away on a quick counter-attack down the left wing. Di Maria sprints forward and cuts towards the penalty area before trying to pick out Cavani, but Zuffi is there to throw his body in front of the ball to stop it from finding the Uruguayan striker.
79' Steffen battles with Aurier deep down the left flank before firing a cross off the full-back and out for a rare corner. The winger steps up and curls the ball over to Janko, but the striker isn't quite able to make contact with the ball, despite rising high in front of goal.
M. Janko
S. Dié
Basel
78' Basel have made their final change of the evening, and it's another attacking one, with Die making way for Janko.
M. Lang
Yellow Card
Basel
76' Lang catches Marquinhos with a late challenge as the two battle for the ball in the heart of the PSG penalty area, and the full-back ends up receiving a yellow card for what was a nasty and slightly high tackle that caught the Brazilian on the ankle.
74' The pace of the game has slowed down somewhat, with PSG now sitting slightly deeper as they try to keep Basel at play. The visitors haven't looked as good in the second half as they did before the break, but they're nonetheless trying their hardest to push forward in search of a way back into the game.
72' Another vital interception by Bjarnason! The Icelander, who has defended well this evening, flies in front of Cavani and stops the striker from reaching the ball after Aurier did well down the right flank. The Uruguayan looks desperate for a goal after struggling to find much joy tonight.
L. Zuffi
M. Delgado
Basel
70' Basel have made their second alteration of the night, with Zuffi coming on to replace Delgado for the final 20 minutes.
68' PSG patiently work the ball from one flank to the other before Rabiot sends a lofted pass over the top of the Basel defence and into the penalty area, but Vaclik does well to dart out quickly to deal with the danger at the vital moment.
R. Steffen
Yellow Card
Basel
66' Steffen becomes the latest player to receive a yellow card after a poor and cynical challenge over on the right flank stops PSG from breaking away on a swift counter-attack.
65' Suchy hits the post! The free-kick results in a corner, but the set-piece is well dealt with by PSG. Basel come back once again, however, before another poor foul from Rabiot results in a free-kick over on the right flank. It's curled into the middle of the box and finds the head of Suchy, but the centre-back's effort ends up ricocheting off the woodwork after leaving Areola rooted to the spot.
A. Rabiot
Yellow Card
PSG
64' Bjarnason breaks down the left flank on a marauding run before being upended just outside of the PSG penalty area, resulting in a free-kick for Basel in a dangerous position and a yellow card for Rabiot, who kicked the ball away in frustration and is booked for dissent.
Lucas Moura
Goal
PSG
62' GOAL! Lucas makes it 2-0! Basel remain completely open at the back and allow PSG to come back once again. Aurier picks up the ball in space before whipping a low cross into the penalty area, where Suchy scuffs an awful attempted clearance straight to Lucas, who then fires a low shot past Vaclik and into the back of the net.
61' Golden opportunity for Cavani! Out of nothing, the Uruguayan is presented with a wonderful chance to double PSG's lead, but he ends up firing his close-range shot straight into the body of Vaclik. He really should have done better with that!
A. Šporar
S. Doumbia
Basel
60' Basel have made their first substitution of the game, with Doumbia making way for Sporar in an attacking change.
59' Lang is put under pressure by Cavani and ends up accidentally poking the ball out of play for a throw-in deep down the left flank. It's sent short to Matuidi, who then pokes the ball over to Kurzawa, but the full-back's attempted pass back towards the midfielder is overhit and bounces out for a goal-kick.
57' Vital block by Marquinhos! Bjarnason gets himslef into a good position down the right wing and cuts into the PSG penalty area before firing a low pass across the face of goal, but Marquinhos is there to cut out the danger before the ball can find Doumbia in front of goal.
55' Basel break away quickly down the left wing and win themselves a corner, which is quickly sent to Doumbia and results in a free-kick for the visitors after the striker is pushed to the ground by Verratti. Delgado steps up and looks set to curl a cross into the middle of the box, but he instead decides to shoot and sends his effort sailing several yards over the top of the crossbar.
54' Chance for Lucas! A clever corner from Di Maria finds Lucas in a pocket of space on the edge of the penalty area, but the Brazilian scuffs his first-time shot and is unable to guide it into the back of the Basel net.
53' Wonderful tackle by Bjarnason! Aurier flies into the right-hand side of the Basel penalty area and latches on to a great pass forward from Lucas, but as soon as he makes contact with the ball he's dispossessed by a fantastic sliding interception from Bjarnason.
51' PSG move the ball around nicely once again before Di Maria breaks down the left flank and tries to take on Suchy, but the centre-back does well to dart across the pitch to deal with the Argentine before winning his side a throw-in near to the corner flag.
49' Cavani goes down inside the Basel penalty area, but nothing is given! The Uruguayan striker breaks into the box and takes on Balanta before going down under a challenge from the centre-back, but the referee immediately tells the forward to get back to his feet and waves away his pleas for a penalty.
48' Cavani goes close! Traore charges into the back of Aurier and pushes the PSG full-back to the ground as they battle for the ball, resulting in a free-kick for PSG in a dangerous position over on the right wing. It's whipped in to the penalty area and finds Cavani in a great position, but the Uruguayan's headed effort ends up skimming the near post before flying into the side-netting.
46' And we're underway once again!
The two teams are making their way back out on to the pitch ahead of the start of the second half. Neither side have made any substitutions during the half-time break.
It hasn't been the best first half for PSG, who have looked lacklustre in front of goal due to excellent defending from Basel. For the opening 40 minutes, the Swiss sat back and soaked up all of the pressure being put on them by the home side, but Steffen switched off for a second and was made to pay by Di Maria, who was easily able to fire the hosts in front with his first chance of the game.
HALF-TIME: PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN 1-0 BASEL
45' + 1' Basel pick up the ball in the middle of the pitch and immediately break away on one last counter-attack before the half-time break. Delgado spots a run forward from Lang and quickly tries to pick out the full-back with a lofted pass forward, but it's slightly overhit and the latter is unable to keep the ball in play.
45' The fourth official has indicated that there will be just one minute of added time.
44' PSG move the ball around nicely before they try to carve Basel open down the left flank once again. This time it's Kurzawa who attempts to take on Steffen just outside of the penalty area, but the winger stands tall and dispossesses the full-back before Lang wins his side a throw-in.
42' The game gets underway once again and Basel immediately try to break down the left wing through Doumbia. The striker gets himself into a good position near to the corner flag before trying to whip a low cross into the penalty area, but his final touch is poor and sends the ball rolling harmlessly out of play for a goal-kick.
E. Cavani
Assist
PSG
40' Cavani has been awarded the assist after the ball deflected off his knee and over to Di Maria, but questions have to be asked of the Basel defence, who switched off ever so slightly and allowed Matuidi to find far too much space over on the left-hand side of the penalty area.
Á. Di María
Goal
PSG
40' GOAL! PSG have taken the lead! Rabiot threads a lovely pass down the left wing and into the path of Matuidi, who is easily able to beat both Steffen and Lang. The midfielder then fires a low cross into the middle of the box that bounces off Cavani and into the path of Di Maria, who then blasts his first-time shot into the top right-hand corner of the net.
38' Verratti picks up the ball in a pocket of space in the middle of the pitch and quickly tries to pick out Aurier on the right-hand side of the Basel penalty area, but the full-back is unable to make contact with the ball and lets it bounce out for a goal-kick.
36' And now Rabiot goes close! After dealing with the danger, PSG break away on a quick counter-attack through Rabiot. The midfielder charges towards the penalty area and then tries to beat Vaclik from 25 yards out, but his rocket of a strike is well saved by the Czech goalkeeper.
35' Doumbia hits the post! Delgado, who has arguably been Basel's best player thus far, twists and turns over on the left wing before firing a brilliant cross over to the far post, where Doumbia meets it well before hitting the woodwork with his close-range headed effort. He really should have buried that!
33' A long clearance from Vaclik finds Silva, but the PSG captain's first touch isn't the best and almost results in him being dispossessed by Doumbia in a dangerous position. The striker desperately battles for the ball as he tries to take it away from the Brazilian, but the centre-back is just about able to hold on before finally clearing the danger.
31' Di Maria goes close! Basel lose the ball on the halfway line and this time it's PSG who fly forward on a quick counter-attack. Lucas sprints down the right flank before sending a looping cross over to Di Maria inside the box, but the Argentine's first-time volley fails to find the bottom right-hand corner of the net after beating Vaclik.
29' Delgado and Bjarnason link up wonderfully well deep down the left wing before the Icelander cuts inside and fires a thumping shot towards the PSG goal, but, off balance, he completely scuffs his strike and ends up sending it spinning out for a throw-in over on the right flank.
28' Basel are unable to fully clear the danger and PSG push forward again quickly, but an audacious 25-yard effort from Rabiot fails to hit the target and instead sails a few yards wide of the near post and out for a goal-kick.
27' The hosts patiently pass the ball around as they try to find a way through the sea of white shirts camped in front of them, but they're unable to do so. Di Maria does manage to get himself into a good position on the edge of the Basel penalty area, but his first touch is poor and sends the ball rolling into the feet of Xhaka.
25' PSG lose the ball over on the right wing and Basel hit them on another quick counter-attack. A thumped lofted pass is sent up towards the edge of the penalty area, where it finds Steffen, and the winger cuts on to his left foot before rifling a fierce shot towards goal that sails a few yards over the top of the crossbar.
23' Aurier, who has made a few dangerous runs down the right wing, cuts past Bjarnason before flying into the Basel penalty area. He tries to take on Traore before going crashing to the ground on the byline, but the referee ignores his pleas for a penalty and instead tells him to get to his feet. Traore doesn't look at all pleased with the right-back, who threw himself to the ground despite not being touched at all.
21' The first corner is curled into the penalty area, where Areola isn't at all convincing with his attempted clearance and has to be bailed out by Marquinhos, who heads the ball out for another corner. The second set-piece also causes the PSG goalkeeper problems, but this time he's awarded a free-kick after being clattered into by Suchy.
20' Vital clearance by Kurzawa! Steffen breaks past three PSG players before firing an incredibly dangerous bouncing cross into the middle of the hosts' penalty area. Bjarnason charges towards the ball and almost meets it on the edge of the six-yard box, but Kurzawa is just about able to beat the Icelander to it before thumping the ball out for a corner.
19' A half-hearted PSG attacking move breaks down, allowing Basel to hit the hosts on a quick counter. Doumbia powers forward on a strong run before teeing up Delgado over on the left wing, but the Argentine is unable to pick out Traore with his poked pass into the left-hand side of the box.
18' PSG seem to be getting frustrated by Basel's diligent defending, resulting in them hitting hopeful balls into the visitors' penalty area. This time it's Rabiot who sends a pass flying over the Swiss side's back line and into the path of Aurier, but the full-back is quicky beaten to the ball by Balanta, who is easily able to deal with the danger.
16' Aurier flies down the right wing on a marauding run before swinging a dangerous cross into the heart of the Basel penalty area. Lucas charges towards the ball and almost meets it with his head at the near post, but it ends up missing the Brazilian by the narrowest of margins before being cleared by Lang.
14' PSG are enjoying the vast majority of the possession thus far but are failing to do much with it. Basel look well-organised and defensively resolute, leaving the home side frustrated and unable to find much joy in front of goal.
12' A looping cross from Aurier sails into the middle of the penalty area and towards Cavani, but the striker is beaten to the ball just as he's about to get a head on it. The ball flies out to Verratti on the edge of the box, however, but the Italian's first-time shot is poorly hit and sails comfortably over the top of the Basel goal.
11' What an opportunity for Basel! Silva is caught sleeping on the ball and gifts possession to Doumbia, who immediately sets up Delgado. The captain is in a great position over on the left-hand side of the PSG penalty area, but his thumping shot is well saved by Areola. The goalkeeper can only push the ball out to Doumbia, however, and the Ivorian quickly unleashes a first-time strike that flies just over the top of the crossbar.
9' PSG move the ball around nicely deep inside the Basel half of the pitch before a lofted pass is thumped down the left wing and into the path of Di Maria, but Lang is there to cut out the danger before thumping the ball back up towards the halfway line.
7' Die fouls Matuidi midway inside the Basel half of the pitch, resulting in a free-kick for the hosts that's taken quickly. It's sent into the left-hand side of the visitors' penalty area before Kurzawa whips a low pass across the face of goal, but the ball ends up bouncing into the hands of Cavani as he tries to get a shot away.
5' Lang hits the crossbar! Delgado wins Basel a corner over on the left flank and swings a lovely cross over to the far post. Bjarnason rises high and meets the ball well before nodding it over to Lang, who then beats Areola with a bullet header that ricochets off the woodwork.
3' It's been a good start to the game from PSG, who, as expected, are bossing possession as they put Basel under pressure inside their own half of the pitch. It already looks as if they're going to try and catch the visitors down the right wing, where Di Maria is looking hungry.
1' And we're off! Basel get us underway, attacking from left to right.
The two sides are making their way out on to the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
Meanwhile, Basel boss Urs Fischer has made two alterations to the side that featured against Luzern in their last outing, with Eder Balanta and Adama Traore coming into the starting line-up to replace Daniel Hoegh and Blas Riveros, respectively.
Unai Emery has decided to make four changes to the PSG side that started the win against Nancy on the weekend, with Thomas Meunier, Presnel Kimpembe, Grzegorz Krychowiak and Jonathan Ikone making way for Serge Aurier, Layvin Kurzawa, Adrien Rabiot and Angel Di Maria, respectively.
Basel substitutes: Vailati, Hoegh, Gaber, Calla, Zuffi, Sporar, Janko.
Basel XI (4-4-1-1): Vaclik; Lang, Suchy, Balanta, Traore; Bjarnason, Xhaka, Die, Steffen; Delgado; Doumbia.
Paris Saint-Germain substitutes: Trapp, Meunier, Maxwell, Krychowiak, Ben Arfa, Jese, Augustin.
Paris Saint-Germain XI (4-3-3): Areola; Aurier, Marquinhos, Silva, Kurzawa; Matuidi, Verratti, Rabiot; Lucas, Cavani, Di Maria.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this evening…
Urs Fischer’s men had to come from behind to hold Ludogorets to a 1-1 draw in their opening group stage clash, whilst they were no match for Arsenal and ended up suffering a 2-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium. Tonight’s game is set to be an equally tough contest as, despite a less than stellar start to the season, PSG are still a force to be reckoned with on the European stage.
In stark contrast to PSG, Basel are dominating domestically and have already opened up a 14-point gap at the top of the Swiss Super League table thanks to an excellent start to the campaign. They comfortably beat Luzern 3-0 on Saturday to remain unbeaten in the league, but in Europe they are struggling to keep up with the big boys.
PSG have performed better in the Champions League, however, and currently sit equal on points with Group A leaders Arsenal. After suffering a somewhat frustrating draw against the English team in their opening game, last month saw them comfortably beat Bulgarian minnows Ludogorets 3-1, and they will be looking to do the same this evening against a Basel side that are yet to pick up a win.
It hasn’t been an entirely straightforward start to the season for PSG, who have already lost twice in Ligue 1 to leave them four points behind league leaders Nice. The last time they lost as many games before the title had been wrapped up was back in January 2015, whilst last month’s defeat against Toulouse was their first against the southern side in almost seven years.
Good evening and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s Champions League group stage game between Paris Saint-Germain and Basel at the Parc des Princes.
