And that wraps up our coverage. We hope you enjoyed our commentary, and until next time, goodbye!
Before Liverpool play their first leg against Ernesto Valverde’s Barcelona on Tuesday 30th of April, they must contend with matters closer to home with their next league assignment at Cardiff City on Sunday. As for Porto, they also resume domestic duties at the Estadio do Dragao against Santa Clara a day prior.
Despite Porto’s excellent start, it is Liverpool who not only qualify for the Champions League semi-finals but also obliterated their hosts with a classic European performance away from home littered with quick breaks and counter-attacking swagger. Goals from Mane, Salah, Firmino and Van Dijk - the latter arguably completing a new Fab Four for the Reds - sealed the deal for Klopp’s side, and they now face a mammoth semi-final against fellow five-time winners Barcelona! As for Conceicao’s Porto, all focus must now be on the league as they attempt to recover from a crushing defeat in front of their home faithful.
90' There will be two minutes of added time to be played.
89' Salah is now level with Mane and Rush as the Reds' joint second highest European Cup/Champions League goalscorer.
87' Danilo brings down Gomez in dangerous free-kick territory for Liverpool, but Salah’s set-piece is wayward and Porto get the goal kick.
S. Mané
84' Despite pressure from his marker, Mane does very well to flick Milner's corner towards the crowded six-yard box, almost instinctively knowing of Van Dijk's presence in a threatening area.
V. van Dijk
84' GOOOOAAALLLL!! VAN DIJK ADDS MORE GLOSS TO THE PROCEEDINGS! Milner's corner is flicked on by Mane at the near post, and the centre-back ghosts inside the six-yard area to power it home past Casillas to make it 4-1 on the night and 6-1 on aggregate!
82' Soares latches onto a wayward Liverpool pass and goes for it alone, forcing a shot that goes just wide of Alisson’s right post!
Bruno Costa
Y. Brahimi
81' Brahimi makes way for Costa as Conceicao rounds off his substitutions for the match.
80' Henderson has registered three assists in his last four matches in all competitions for Liverpool, as many as in his previous 86 games for the club
J. Corona
78' Corona comes off after an industrious display, and Fernando comes on in his place for Conceicao's second change.
J. Henderson
77' Henderson, also a substitute, continues his good run of form with an excellently weighted chip towards the Porto six-yard area. Firmino was only happy to oblige after ghosting past Pepe and Felipe.
Roberto Firmino
77' GOOOAAALLL!! FIRMINO HAS MADE IT 3-1!! The substitute gets on the end of a wonderful cross by Henderson and glances a great header past Casillas to make it 5-1 on aggregate and put the tie well beyond doubt!
75' Salah has now scored 67 goals for Liverpool in all competitions, at least two more than any other player since Klopp took over the club in October 2015.
73' ONE OF THE MISSES OF THE SEASON FROM MANE THERE! The Senegal forward takes a great first touch off of Henderson’s pass before bursting clear of the Porto defence and rounding Casillas with an open goal to shoot at only for his attempt to go hopelessly wide!
71' Liverpool have scored with both of their shots on target in this match.
J. Henderson
A. Robertson
71' Robertson has picked up a tiny knock, and Henderson takes his place as a precautionary measure and the skipper's armband from Milner, who now moves into left-back.
Alex Telles
68' Telles’ outswinging corner proved to be the perfect delivery for Militao, who grabbed his side a consolation that has sparked the home fans into a frenzy despite the situation they find themselves in.
Éder Militão
68' GOOOAAALLL!! PORTO ARE BACK IN IT!! Real Madrid-bound Militao leaps highest in a crowded Liverpool box and powers an unstoppable header past a diving Alisson to make it 2-1 on the night and 4-1 on aggregate!
J. Gomez
T. Alexander-Arnold
66' That was Alexander-Arnold's last contribution of the game, as Gomez comes on in his place to make his long-awaited return to first-team action.
T. Alexander-Arnold
65' Alexander-Arnold’s wonderfully timed throughball made all the difference, and served to only provide Salah with the clearest of opportunities to grab his first and Liverpool’s second!
Mohamed Salah
65' GOOOOAAALLLL!! GAME, SET AND MATCH LIVERPOOL!! Salah scores his first away goal of this season’s Champions League after a quick breakaway which saw him coolly dispatch the ball past Casillas following Alexander-Arnold’s raking throughball that completely deceived the Dragons’ backline! It’s now 2-0 to Klopp’s men as they lead 4-0 on aggregate!
63' Mane does well to harry and win the ball off of Brahimi, and Liverpool calmly play it around the back as Porto continue to chase shadows.
61' As of the 60th minute, Marega has had 10 shots across his and Porto’s quarter-final tie with Liverpool without scoring; this comes after bagging in six straight appearances in the competition leading up to the first leg (15 shots, six goals).
59' Firmino and Mane play a quick one-two just inside the Porto area, but the latter’s cross fails to find the onrushing Salah and the Dragons clear.
58' Porto have lost the first leg of a Champions League/European Cup knockout tie by 2 or more goals on six previous occasions, and on all six of those occasions, they have been eliminated from the competition.
57' Salah meets Mane’s quick lofted ball as he runs into the home side’s penalty area with his head, but the chance is off target and Porto regain possession via the goal kick.
55' Telles whips another big one into the Liverpool penalty area, but fails to find a team-mate and the ball harmlessly goes out for a Liverpool goal kick.
52' Soares makes his first contribution since coming on, managing to make contact with Herrera’s cross only for the header to go well wide of Alisson’s goal.
49' Danilo’s header falls towards the path of Salah, who finds space before whipping in a cross that Pepe gets in the way of for another Liverpool corner. Firmino gets on the end of Alexander-Arnold’s deep set-piece, but the former’s first-time cut-back is intercepted and the danger is eventually cleared.
46' Liverpool get play restarted as the second half gets underway!
Tiquinho Soares
46' Soares also comes on for Otavio as Conceicao looks to switch up his attacking options in search of a goal or four.
Roberto Firmino
D. Origi
46' Firmino comes on for Origi as Klopp makes his first change of the match just as the second half is about to commence.
With Liverpool now having a firm grip on the tie and one hand into the semi-finals, Klopp will want to see this match out with no new injury worries as they have one eye on their Premier League title challenge which resumes on the weekend. As for Porto, Conceicao knows they now have an uphill battle on their hands, but their first-half performance highlighted their offensive threat and more of the same could expose more defensive frailties from the away side.
For all of Porto’s endeavour and ambition when going forward, it is they who are now 3-0 behind on aggregate after conceding the all-important opener despite being in the ascendancy for an overwhelming majority of the first half. The scoreline doesn’t tell the complete story, as Mane’s goal came completely against the run of play with Marega repeating his first-leg profligacy and missing another host of chances to get Conceicao’s side back in the tie. Alas, it is Klopp who will have the happier half-time team talk as they now have a one-goal cushion in the cauldron that is the Estadio do Dragao.
45' + 3' MILNER ALMOST DOUBLES LIVERPOOL’S LEAD! He gets on the end of Alexander-Arnold’s whipped delivery and while his effort hits Felipe, the chance nearly bounces towards the inside of the far post before going just wide of Casillas’ goal!
45' + 1' Liverpool have failed to have an attempt of any kind since opening the scoring in the 26th minute.
45' Casillas is more alert than Origi, racing out of his area to clear the loose ball before the latter could realise that he wasn’t offside and was well within rights to go for it! There will be two minutes of added time to be played.
44' Marega and Porto appeal for a penalty after it appeared that Van Dijk had brought the forward down near the six-yard area, but Makkeile waves them away and the Reds continue playing on.
42' Porto have had 15 first-half shots in a Champions League match for the first time since November 2009 (against APOEL).
41' Militao does brilliantly to jink past a couple of Liverpool players and plays a one-two with Herrera before breaking through down the wing. Unfortunately for the full-back, he is dispossessed and the away side clear the danger.
39' Van Dijk rises highest to clear a tantalising Militao cross with authority. Corona eventually receives the ball from out on the wing and takes on Robertson once more before cutting in and testing Alisson with another low drive.
Yellow Card
36' He would’ve been odds-on to get at least a yellow card, and Pepe fails to disappoint by getting his name in Makkeile’s book for bundling Origi over as the forward was about to turn and make a break for it.
34' Each of the 15 Champions League goals Liverpool have scored and the 12 that Porto have conceded in the competition this season have come from inside the area.
S. Mané
Yellow Card
32' Mane drops Militao with a stray arm with both going for an aerial ball, and the former receives the game’s first booking.
29' BRAHIMI ALMOST LEVELS! The onrushing winger receives Militao’s low cut-back and lets loose with a low drive that Alisson is equal to with a snap save! Porto now need four goals to qualify to the semi-finals!
28' Only Steven Gerrard (21) has scored more goals for Liverpool in European Cup/Champions League history than Mane, with the Senegal forward now level with Ian Rush on 14.
Mohamed Salah
26' Salah did brilliantly to find Mane on the far post amidst a crowd of blue-and-white and red in the Porto penalty area!
S. Mané
26' GOOOAAALLLL!! LIVERPOOL SCORE WITH THEIR FIRST SHOT ON TARGET! Not long after Van Dijk’s magnificent interception, the Reds score against the run of play after Salah ekes out a pinpoint pass towards Mane at the far post, and the Senegal forward pokes it home from close range! Despite referee Makkeile’s consultation with his assistants and VAR, the goal stands and Liverpool have the crucial yet undeserved 1-0 lead they craved!
25' Herrera finds space in the box before letting fly with a shot that looks to have been blocked by a team-mate, before Brahimi is flagged for offside while trying to get on the end of Otavio’s throughball.
22' Marega once more mishits another half-decent opportunity after finding more space inside an increasingly vulnerable Liverpool back four.
20' Salah is stopped in his tracks with a cynical challenge by Pepe, who can only offer a wry smile as the winger gets back up.
17' Pepe scuffs his shot from the edge of the Liverpool area after getting on the end of Marega’s knock-down, but he wins a corner after Van Dijk gets in the way of the defender’s effort. However, the set-piece comes to nothing and Liverpool eventually get the goal kick.
16' Porto have had five shots in the opening 10 minutes, while Liverpool have had none.
15' MAREGA ONCE AGAIN! He manages to make contact with Telles’ brilliant cross from the wing, but it isn’t clean enough and he can only watch in despair as another one of his opportunities fails to find the back of the net!
13' Marega didn’t seem sure of his bearings there, as it looked like he didn’t expect to get on the end of another Corona cross as he watches his wayward header go well wide of Alisson’s goal.
10' Robertson gets in the way of a Corona cross, heading it behind for a Porto corner. Danilo doesn’t get enough on his header though, with Pepe just about getting a touch on the back post.
7' MAREGA SHOULD’VE DONE BETTER THERE! The forward latches onto a Pepe pass in the box following a free-kick and he shoots low after turning only for Alisson to dive low to his right and make the save! That’s now at least five good chances that the Porto striker had missed over two legs so far after his horror show in Anfield last week!
4' Salah bundles Telles over, resulting in a cacophony of jeers from the Estadio do Dragao faithful. Porto start again from the back as they look to get the ball forward.
3' Porto change into a 4-3-3 after initially warming up in a 3-4-3, with Militao moving to right-back while Corona is pushed forward with Otavio dropping back into midfield.
1' CLOSE FROM CORONA! The winger cuts in and unleashes a fierce drive after jinking past Robinson which just about sails over the bar! Electric start from the home side!
1' Both sides are decked in their usual colours, with the hosts in their famed blue-and-white stripes while the visitors are out in their iconic all-red.
1' Referee Danny Makkelie blows his whistle, and Porto get us underway at the Estadio do Dragao!
The players are out and kick-off is drawing near.
Origi is making his first Champions League start for Liverpool tonight; he hadn’t played more than 17 minutes in any of his previous four appearances in the competition.
Meanwhile, Klopp makes three changes from the side that beat Chelsea in Anfield on Sunday, opting to once again rotate his midfield by bringing on Milner and Wijnaldum in place of Henderson and Keita. The big surprise is Firmino’s omission from the starting XI though as Origi takes the former’s usual position as the Fab Three’s frontman.
Conceicao makes only two changes from the team that won 3-0 at Portimonense on Saturday to keep pace with Benfica at the top of the Primeira Liga, also switching formation to a 3-4-3 in an effort to combat their visitors’ forward threat. Right-back Wilson Manafa does not make the matchday squad, while Otavio is favoured ahead of Soares up-front. However, their chances will be greatly improved with the returns of defensive lynchpin Pepe and skipper Herrera, who were both suspended for the first-leg defeat.
SUBSTITUTES: Joe Gomez, Xherdan Shaqiri, Daniel Sturridge, Naby Keita, Simon Mignolet, Roberto Firmino, Jordan Henderson.
LIVERPOOL XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joel Matip, Virgil van Dijk, Andrew Robertson; James Milner (c), Fabinho, Georginio Wijnaldum; Mohamed Salah, Divock Origi, Sadio Mane.
SUBSTITUTES: Andre Pereira, Fernando, Tiquinho Soares, Vana Alves, Oliver Torres, Maxi Pereira, Bruno Costa.
PORTO XI (3-4-3): Iker Casillas; Felipe, Pepe, Eder Militao; Jesus Manuel Corona, Hector Herrera (c), Danilo Pereira, Alex Telles; Yacine Brahimi, Moussa Marega, Otavio.
And without further ado, let’s take a look at how both sides line up, starting with the hosts.
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool will be riding a huge wave of confidence after their 2-0 win against Chelsea which put the Reds back on top of the Premier League. With a busy Premier League schedule ahead of the title challengers, Klopp may be tempted to rest several regulars, but given the stage and the occasion it is doubtful that he will be leaving some star names out of his starting XI.
Currently trailing 2-0 from last week’s first leg, which was their first loss in all competitions in over a month, Porto would have to do extremely well to upset the odds and qualify at the expense of arguably Europe’s most in-form side. However, Sergio Conceicao will have the luxury of welcoming back several key players which were missing at Anfield and will implore his players to go all out for the unlikely victory despite their own title aspirations, only trailing Benfica at the Primeira Liga summit on goal difference.
Hello and welcome to our LIVE coverage of this Champions League quarter-final second-leg clash as Porto host Liverpool at the Estadio do Dragao!
