Norwich City v Wolverhampton Wanderers Live Commentary, 27/11/2021

0 - 0
Carrow Road

Norwich's attentions turn to a huge clash against relegation rivals Newcastle in midweek, while Wolves will face Burnley. That's all for now though. Goodbye!
Neither side move places in the league table just yet, but Wolves could end this round of fixtures down in ninth if results don't go their way. They will feel like their momentum has stalled a little after that great win against West Ham last time out.
Smith continues his solid start to life as Norwich boss with a valuable point against pre-match favourites Wolves. It was a tale Norwich know all too well, with a lack of clinical finishing costing them in the end. They were undoubtedly the brighter of the two teams however, and Wolves fans may be disappointed by their side's lack of ambition, particularly towards the end of the match.
90' + 3' Wolves are just keeping possession around their defence as the seconds run out.
90' + 2' Pukki finds Rupp just outside the Wolves box but he runs into trouble in the form of Dendoncker.
K. Hoever
Hwang Hee-Chan
Wolverhampton Wanderers
90' + 2' Hwang makes way for Hoever. It's difficult to see this as anything other than settling for a point from Wolves.
90' Ait Nouri puts in another poor cross from what was a promising position. Three minutes of added time are indicated by the fourth official.
89' Wolves keep the ball around halfway as we approach the last minute of normal time. Will either side push for all three points here?
87' The ball is whipped in from the left to Pukki in the box. He stretches for it but can't get nearly enough on it and it ends up trickling out for a throw. A better striker might have been celebrating a hat-trick today.
86' A deflected cross falls to Jimenez in the box and his shot is sliced wide. It looked like he may have received a late challenge there in the box, but nothing is given by the referee.
85' Moutinho whips in the free-kick and it comes back out to Traore. Traore seems intent on running with the ball and eventually is tackled, after spurning multiple occasions to give the ball to one of his teammates.
84' Dendoncker is hauled down after a concerted spell of possession from Wolves. They'll have a free-kick from near the right-hand touchline.
K. Dowell
M. Rashica
Norwich City
82' Dowell replaces the lively Rashica.
81' Aarons races down the right and feeds Tzolis down the line. Saiss comes across and scythes down the Norwich man. It'll be a free-kick to Norwich from wide on the right.
80' Rashica drives down the left and cuts it back to Rupp. It's a great chance but he hits it into the ground and Sa can get to it fairly comfortably. Are they going to rue these missed opportunities?
78' Wolves seem fairly content to take the sting out of this one. They've been penned back in during the majority of this second half.
77' Williams breaks clear for Norwich but possession is lost and Wolves counter-attack themselves. Hwang's ball is really poor however and the ball ends up harmlessly behind for a goal-kick.
L. Dendoncker
Nélson Semedo
Wolverhampton Wanderers
76' Semedo jogs off and is replaced by the Belgian international Dendoncker.
75' Jimenez picks it up on halfway and tries an elaborate through-ball. He perhaps over-thought that one and it harmlessly goes out for a Norwich throw-in.
73' Aarons cleverly beats his man and wins a corner with his attempt at a cross. The home fans have woken up and are now roaring their team on.
72' Rupp wins the ball in his own half and finds Rashica on the left. Rashica drives with the ball and then his shot from distance is blocked.
70' Huge chance! Pukki plays a one-two with Rupp on the edge of the area and Pukki runs clear with just the goalkeeper to beat! His shot is scuffed though, and Sa makes the save. He had to do better there.
C. Tzolis
J. Sargent
Norwich City
68' Sargent trots off to be replaced by Tzolis.
Adama Traoré
Wolverhampton Wanderers
68' Traore is on for Trincao. Norwich will be wary of what he is capable of.
67' Wolves take the sting out of the game a little with a long period of possession. Ait Nouri runs in on the left but his cross is a poor one, and it is thumped clear by the Norwich defence.
65' Some good pressing from Wolves leads to Krul slicing a clearance out into touch. It looks like Adama Traore is about to come on for the away side. He could be exactly what they need to inject some excitement into their attack.
63' Sargent runs clear on the counter-attack and does well to shield the ball as he waits for support. Possession is shipped out to the left, but Norwich fail to move the ball quick enough and Wolves get back to defend in their numbers.
61' Rashica is starting to enjoy himself now. He drives at two Wolves defenders on the left-hand side but Gilmour's pass is a poor one when he gets possession and the move dies out.
60' Rashica sucks in two defenders which provides space for Gilmour. His threaded pass to Pukki is a good one, but Wolves do well to recover in defence and get the ball away.
59' The corner is taken short and Moutinho ends up floating it into the penalty area. It's not his best delivery and Krul takes it cleanly.
59' There's been a noticeable rise in intensity since the break. Krul is furiously chased down by Ait Nouri and Wolves will have a corner.
57' Hwang drives centrally and moves the ball to Ait Nouri on the left. He perhaps selfishly elects to shoot and it's a comfortable save for Krul.
56' Great pressing from Norwich means they win possession high up in the Wolves area. Gilmour breaks clear into the box and goes down! He looked to go down very softly and the referee is unmoved.
54' Gilmour with a corner from the right and the ball is eventually hacked clear by Coady. Wolves haven't been able to get a foot on the ball in the past five minutes.
Nélson Semedo
Yellow Card
Wolverhampton Wanderers
54' Semedo goes in the book for that challenge on Rashica.
53' Rupp's effort from 25 yards is charged down by Neves. Norwich retain the ball though and Semedo hauls Rashica down on the byline as he beats him for pace.
51' Rupp drives forward in space towards the Wolves penalty area but his cross is slightly overhit and Rashica can't quite get on the end of it.
B. Gibson
Yellow Card
Norwich City
50' Jimenez smartly plays it round the corner on halfway and Gibson clears him out from behind as he does. Gibson goes in the book and he can't really have any complaints.
48' Rashica floats in a free-kick from the left, but it's easily cleared down-field by Wolves.
47' Jimenez finds Trincao who drives forward and whips in an inviting cross back to Jimenez at the far post. His header across trickles past the open-face of the goal, but fortunately for Norwich there is no one there to steer it home.
46' Wolves get us underway for the second half! Both sides are unchanged as we kick-off.
Norwich had seven shots to Wolves' three in that first half. It could have been more than seven also had Pukki been a little less sluggish in getting the ball out of his feet on a few occasions. Wolves won't be disheartened by the 0-0 at this stage though. They tend to win most of their games by the odd goal, and have a habit of scoring late. They've been in this situation many times before.
The first 40 minutes were anything but a classic, but a few chances in the final five sparked this game into life. Wolves will feel they could have made more of that slip up in defence by Norwich. Norwich themselves will most likely be feeling relatively content with how they have matched the side in sixth so far.
45' Aarons plays a lovely one-two with Rupp and is presented with a good opportunity on the right. His shot is a well-struck and Sa is forced into making the stop.
43' Big chance! An almost catastrophic mix up in defence means Jimenez slides in and is inches away from connecting with a tap-in. The ball squirts out to Moutinho just outside the area and Krul is back in his goal just in time to make the save.
41' Some neat play between Pukki and Gilmour results in Sargent finding the ball in some space on the right. His cross is a poor one however.
40' Trincao goes through the gears in midfield and carries it forward menacingly. Williams does very well to get back and recover though, and Norwich come away with the ball in defence.
38' Gilmour gives it away in midfield with an underhit pass and Ait Nouri breaks clear down the left-hand side. His cross finds Jimenez but his header down is cleared away by the Norwich defence.
36' Rupp is involved straight away and finds Sargent in space on the right. The ball is won back by Wolves however they can't keep hold of it, and Norwich build again from defence.
L. Rupp
M. Normann
Norwich City
35' Rupp comes on in place of the injured Normann. Rupp's last start came in early September.
33' Normann is sat down again and is taking on fluids. It looks like Norwich will now be forced into making a change.
31' Rashica takes the free-kick about 30 yards out, but it sails well wide of the target, and Jose Sa doesn't look particularly troubled.
Rúben Neves
Yellow Card
Wolverhampton Wanderers
31' There is some great movement from Pukki and he receives the ball in a dangerous position. Neves cynically hauls him back and goes in the book.
30' Hwang swipes late at Gilmour and is extremely lucky to escape without a booking.
29' Semedo takes down a long ball from the keeper very smartly and does well to flick it over his opponent's head. His attempts to buy a cheap foul however are waved away by the referee.
28' Rashica tenaciously wins the ball off Semedo high up the pitch and slips it to Pukki. Moutinho does very well to track back and nick it off the Norwich striker before he can get a shot away.
B. Gilmour
Yellow Card
Norwich City
26' Gilmour bundles over Hwang as he races away from him near halfway. A clear-cut yellow.
25' Gilmour bursts into the box on the right-hand side and Saiss has to scramble it away for a throw. Norwich keep playing quickly but Rashica is holding on to his opponent and a foul is given against him.
23' Norwich midfielder Normann is sat down in the centre of the pitch. It's unclear quite what's wrong with him, but his shake of the head as he leaves the pitch suggests he may not be able to carry on.
22' 'Is this a library?' sing the away fans. It's fair to say the atmosphere hasn't quite been ignited so far.
21' Half chance! Gilmour drives forward with the ball and slips it into Pukki in space down the left. He struggles to get the ball out of his feet though, and Coady gets back to block his attempt.
20' Neves picks out Semedo with a fabulous pass with the outside of his boot. Semedo can't keep hold of it however and it goes out for a throw-in on the right.
18' There's some sustained pressure from Wolves high up in the Norwich half. Semedo gets into a dangerous position on the byline but his cross is just a fraction too high for Jimenez.
17' Gilmour plays a cute one-two with Pukki and then finds Sargent in space. Sargent misses his chance to strike it goalwards and the opportunity is lost.
15' A free-kick is delivered in from deep by Rashica, and it's just about scrambled behind by the Wolves defence.
14' Semedo tries to beat his marker for pace on the right flank and Williams clatters into him for an obvious foul.
13' Ait Nouri carries the ball inside and tries to slip it into Hwang. Unfortunately for Wolves there's a little too much pace on the pass and he can't quite get on the end of it.
11' Ait Nouri whips in a great ball from the left-hand side in towards Jimenez and he gets there first. He can't quite get across the ball though, and it flies wide.
10' Trincao brings it down beautifully from a Coady long ball just outside the box, but he can't quite keep his balance long enough to get the shot away.
8' Wolves spray the ball around midfield in the Norwich half. It's comfortably their longest spell on the ball in the game, but Trincao is muscled off it by the corner flag and it's a throw to Norwich.
6' Pukki runs the channel down the right and feeds Sargent. His shot is blazed over the bar though.
6' Rashica finds Pukki in space in the box, but Pukki's attempt to curl it into the far corner is well wide.
5' The corner comes into Hanley who has a free header! But his effort is weak and it sails over the bar.
4' Sargent gets in behind on the right-hand side, goes down for a foul, but when nothing is given he gets up and his cross is deflected behind for a corner.
2' Wolves win the ball high in the Norwich half and they enjoy some sustained possession. It doesn't come to anything however.
1' Norwich, in their traditional yellow and green, get us underway. Wolves are playing in all white today.
The players are coming out, and we are moments away from kick-off!
All eyes are on Pukki in this game. He has scored in his last two Premier League games for Norwich, and is looking to score in three in a row in the competition for the first time since August 2019, when he netted in his first ever three Premier League appearances.
There aren’t too many surprises in the team news from either manager. Smith keeps faith in Gilmour, who has enjoyed a return to the first team in the last few weeks. He’ll be looking to show why so many were confused at his lack of appearances early on in the season. Lage keeps with the same 3-4-3 system that has proved difficult to break down for so many sides so far this campaign.
SUBS: Ki-Jana However, Marçal, Leander Dendoncker, Adama Traoré, John Ruddy, Louie Moulden, Fabio Silva, Luke Cundle.
WOLVES (3-4-3): José Sá; Conor Coady, Romain Saïss, Maximilian Kilman; João Moutinho, Rayan Ait Nouri, Nélson Semedo, Rúben Neves; Raúl Jiménez, Trincão, Hwang Hee-Chan.
SUBS: Pierre Lees-Melou, Angus Gunn, Andrew Omobamidele, Lukas Rupp, Christos Tzolis, Todd Cantwell, Adam Idah, Kieran Dowell, Dimitrios Giannoulis.
NORWICH CITY (4-3-3): Tim Krul; Grant Hanley, Ben Gibson, Max Aarons, Brandon Williams; Kenny McLean, Billy Gilmour, Mathias Normann; Teemu Pukki, Milot Rashica, Joshua Sargent.
Wolves start the day up in sixth, and have been quietly going about their business this season without too much attention being directed their way. Bruno Lage has picked up from where Nuno Espirito Santo left off, and Wolves have been defensively solid all season so far. They’ve lost just once in their last seven in the league, and will surely be confident of getting all three points today.
Norwich’s hopes of survival in the Premier League had been rubbished by most a few weeks ago. Yet after back-to-back wins, each with a different manager, they sit in 19th in the table three points off safety. Dean Smith’s first game in charge resulted in a 2-1 victory away at Brentford last weekend, and they will be hoping to keep their recent good run of form going today.
