And that will do it here from France as Schalke get the win that they deserve, thanks to a goal from Baba late in the second half. Nice can have few complaints, given that they were second best for almost the entirety of this game. It looked set to be a banana peel for the visitors, but they got what they wanted in the end. That's all from us, see you next time!
OFF THE WOODWORK! Meyer makes an impact once again with an otherworldly first touch to free himself for a shot. Cardinale makes another accomplished save, and Choupo-Moting puts the rebound onto the post!
S. Kolašinac
L. Goretzka
Schalke 04
Kolasinac will get a late run out for Goretzka.
M. Balotelli
Yellow Card
Nice
Balotelli gets his name taken for unceremoniously hauling back Howedes in plain view of the match official.
Cyprian has a crack on goal that is blocked, but it spills for Belhanda, who lashes a half-volley on the turn with no visibility, only for the goalkeeper to grab it out of the sky confortably.
Konoplyanka looks for Choupo-Moting in space, and the forward takes that pass on his chest, but Ricardo positions himself well to make the challenge after initially letting him control the ball.
Nice suddenly have Schalke penned back in their own half for the first time in this game, and Balotelli cuts in to hammer another one on goal. There's a free man at the back post, but the offside flag is up.
WONDERFUL SAVE FROM FAHRMANN! Nice finally register their first shot on target as Belhanda, fresh off the bench, slips in Balotelli, who lashes one for the bottom corner but it's pushed around the post!
The game is halted for a pitch invader, who is soon apprehended by security.
Y. Belhanda
Dalbert Henrique
Nice
Belhanda is thrown on for Dalbert.
Nice need to abandon 80 minutes of habit and throw caution to the wind, but first, they have to win the ball back. Schalke are really looking hungry here, with that goal filling them with confidence.
Schalke are on the hunt for a second goal to put this game to bed, but Konoplyanka can't find the target from a good position. It's hard to argue against them deserving the lead at this point.
A. Baba
Goal
Schalke 04
BABA BREAKTHROUGH! Finally Schalke have the opener. The full-back plays a one-two with Meyer that carves open Nice's right flank too easily, and he hammers a finish past Cardinale at the near post!
M. Meyer
Assist
Schalke 04
Meyer was denied minutes before, but he came up with the goods eventually.
CARDINALE COMES UP WITH A GREAT SAVE! The keeper has been keeping his side in this game, and he reacts to push a Meyer stinger around the post! Somehow it's still goalless.
J. Seri
Yellow Card
Nice
Seri becomes the first Nice player booked this evening, leaving his leg on to chop down Goretzka, who had him beat for pace and possession. A much more aggressive second half from both teams.
Choupo-Moting tries twice to find a way through a crowded penalty area, and eventually tries to toe-poke it into the far corner, but it's well off the mark and Nice have themselves a throw-in.
M. Bodmer
V. Koziello
Nice
Bodmer has been introduced, and off goes Koziello.
FINE SAVE! Choupo-Moting finds space and opts to lay the ball off for Bentaleb to attack. The Tottenham loanee's effort takes a strong deflection, but Cardinale is still more than equal to it!
Nice are looking a little more accomplished in possession, and Plea nearly gets a run on the defence, but Fahrmann is off his line quickly to put out that fire. Can they snatch an unlikely winner?
An hour gone, and Schalke are starting to lose their nerve just a tad. Nice will be quietly growing in confidence at the fact that they're holding the Germans and in truth, the visitors haven't threatened as much in the second period.
M. Meyer
B. Stambouli
Schalke 04
Meyer is introduced for Stambouli.
Schalke have had a fair number of set-pieces in the second half, but haven't been able to make much of them. They continue to pile pressure on Nice, but their end product is sorely lacking.
Half a chance for Nice as Plea takes aim, but he never was able to keep that one on target. Next up is Choupo-Moting down at the other end of the field, rounding Cardinale from an offside position.
Y. Konoplyanka
A. Schöpf
Schalke 04
First change of the game as Schopf departs for Konoplyanka. The former saw a lot of the ball, but was a bit erratic with his decision making and flubbed a few chances.
A moment of panic at the back for Schalke as Schoph sells Fahrmann a little short with a back-pass, but the keeper manages to make the punt ahead of the onrushing Balotelli.
Schalke continue to forge forward, picking up right where they left off towards the end of the first half. Howedes leads a charge down the right but just overruns a long ball over the top.
And we're back!
And that will do it for now from Stade de Nice as it's goalless at the break. Schalke were by far the better team, and will be disappointed that they weren't able to finish off one of their chances. Nice have escaped so far, and have a lot of soul searching to do to chance the course of this game. Stay tuned for the restart soon.
Glimpse of a chance for Nice right on the stroke of half-time as Plea sprints down the right-hand side and cuts a dangerous ball back into the area, but none of his team-mates reach to attack it.
B. Stambouli
Yellow Card
Schalke 04
The game is stopped again as Stambouli didn't hold back from a challenge on Koziello, despite it being clear that he wasn't going to get a piece of the ball. Booking for the midfielder.
Tempers flare as Schopf attempts to skip past Dante, who hauls him to the turf, which upsets the Schalke wide man. The Brazilian was lucky that he wasn't called for a penalty to be quite honest.
Very careless in the middle of the park from the Nice players, as they keep inviting pressure on themselves by turning the ball over. A few of the giveaways have been absolutely shocking.
GOOD CHANCE! Embolo executes a well-timed run to blow by his marker down the right-hand side, but his cutback is read well by Ricardo, who makes the interception to snuff out the danger.
Koziello comes up with an important block to deny Schalke, as a corner found its way to Nastasic near the top of the box. Half-time is fast approaching and Nice will be delighted if it stays level.
Nastasic is next to earn the referee's ire as he lays Plea flat with a challenge, but he escapes with nothing more than a warning. The crowd are not happy with some of these decisions here.
A. Baba
Yellow Card
Schalke 04
Baba flies in with a clumsy challenge down near the benches to stop a break, and the referee is quickly across to brandish a yellow card and prevent that situation from escalating any further.
Schopf has seen a lot of the ball, and Dalbert Henrique is finding it really hard to keep tabs on him down that flank. He needs a little more help from Cyprien, who has really not been on his defensive game.
Balotelli plucks a pass out of the sky expertly, but he has no support and is soon robbed of possession. Things are starting to get a little feisty now with challenges flying in from all angles.
Dante has really been holding the nice backline together with both hands here, making another important challenge on Goretzka. Schalke just seem to be able to drive through everyone else at will.
It seems only a matter of time before Nice concede, as they're hanging on for dear life against relentless pressure from the visiting team. They're penned back around their own 18-yard area.
HUGE CHANCE FOR THE VISITORS! Cardinale comes to Nice's rescue, as Howedes cuts the ball back to Schopf  inside the area. His first attempt is parried, but he lashes the rebound, which is also denied! Dante then produced a magnificent block on the line to thwart Embolo's sure-fire rebound.
Schoph manufactures space for the shot on his left foot near the edge of the box, but his attempt loops off target. Second shot of the game for the visitors, who just need to apply a little more end product.
Nearly a costly mixup as Baysse plays a diagonal back pass for his goalkeeper that puts tremendous pressure on him to make the clearance. Luckily, Cardinale catches up with it and manages to pass it to a team-mate.
Choupo-Moting attempts to make inroads down the centre, but he runs into the formidable figure of Dante, who overpowers him to win the ball back. good defending from the former Bayern man.
First shot in anger of this game as Nice fail to clear a ball from about 25 yards out, which invites Choupo-Moting to have a go from that range. However, his effort lacks any sort of accuracy.
Every time Nice get the ball it's a mismatch as their Schalke counterparts swarm them. Balotelli has been completely isolated to start this match - it will be interesting to watch his body language if this continues.
Great support in this stadium as the fans are in fine voice. Their side are finally starting to string a few passes together, but Schalke are putting sufficient pressure in the midfield areas to disrupt them.
Schalke continue to press and probe, and win a corner which ends up being a disappointing delivery from Schopf. Still, the ball has barely been out of the Nice half since the first whistle.
Good early pressure from the visiting side, forcing Nice to do all the defending here. The passing and movement from the midfield three to link with the full-backs is of particular note.
Schalke are trying to attack down the right-hand side in th early goings here, but every time that Schopf gets the ball, he's forced out to the corner flag and can't get a cross into a dangerous area.
Off we go.
Mario Balotelli will start for Nice up top alongside Alassane Plea, in an unchanged starting XI for the French side following their 3-2 win over Marseille four days ago. For the visitors, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, chasing his 50th European goal, has been benched in favour of Breel Embolo, with Alessandro Schopf also coming into the side at the expense of Yevhen Konoplyanka.
