The Reds had chances to kill the game off, but Sadio Mane, Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah missed second-half opportunities. However, the visitors were untroubled at the back and held out comfortably for the three points.

Liverpool have to keep winning to put the pressure on Manchester City at the top of the table. A win for the Reds this afternoon would allow them to temporarily leapfrog City into first place ahead of their clash against Leeds later today. Liverpool have been in outstanding form, and are unbeaten in their last 14 matches. They have only failed to win two of those games, which were on the road against Chelsea and Manchester City. The Magpies will present a tough test this afternoon, especially after the short turnaround since Liverpool's win over Villarreal in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Newcastle are in prime form ahead of the contest, having won their last four matches on the bounce. The Magpies have been even better on home soil, winning their last six matches, including a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace in their last game at St James' Park. Eddie Howe will be determined to end the season on a high to take his team into the next campaign with momentum, having already achieved their goal of survival. A win over the Reds would be a statement of intent for the future.
Good afternoon and welcome to the live commentary of the Premier League clash between Newcastle United and Liverpool at St James' Park.
