Commentary

Thanks for joining our commentary this afternoon. Until next time, goodbye.
Newcastle are next in action against Brighton and Hove Albion on the road in the Premier League next Saturday. Chelsea take on Malmo in the Champions League in their next outing on Tuesday.
Chelsea ease past Newcastle United in their Premier League clash at St James' Park with a 3-0 victory. Reece James was the star of the show in front of goal with two brilliant finishes before Jorginho added a third from the penalty spot after Kai Havertz was fouled in the box. Thomas Tuchel's men extend their lead at the top of the table with their triumph this afternoon, while Newcastle extend their winless run to 10 league matches.

He takes his traditional stutter-step before firing high into the middle of the net.

R. James
Goal
77' GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!! JAMES NOTCHES HIS SECOND!!!!! 2-0 CHELSEA!!!! The Blues score a vital second goal to take control of the contest as James blasts home an effort on the half-volley. Havertz and Barkley combine on a break upfield before Loftus-Cheek arrives in support with James. The full-back offloads to Loftus-Cheek, who sees his strike blocked. However, the rebound falls to James to hammer on his left foot into the middle of the net.
75' Saint-Maximin has space on the counter, but he misplaces his first-time pass for Wilson out for a throw-in.
72' Chilwell swings a corner in from the left flank that Rudiger attempts to head at goal, but he cannot direct his effort on target amid the presence of Lascelles.
69' Chelsea are maintaining possession with ease. Newcastle cannot muster a spell of pressure amid the composure of the visitors on the ball.

65' GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!! JAMES BLASTS CHELSEA AHEAD!!!! 1-0!!! The Blues take the lead as James is afforded space and time to fire into the top-left corner. 46' We're back under way at St James' Park.
Newcastle have been dogged at the back, but have offered very little going forward. Graeme Jones' tenure is not expected to last much longer, but he will want to hand the team over with a win in the Premier League under their belt. The Magpies have to be more adventurous.
It's goalless at the break in the Premier League clash between Newcastle United and Chelsea at St James' Park. Both teams have struggled for inspiration in the final third. The Blues did have a goal disallowed for offside, although Hakim Ziyech was well beyond the last men when he produced the finish. Thomas Tuchel will be demanding an improvement from his team in the second half.

37' Rudiger makes a break forward from the back and tries to release Hudson-Odoi, but the two players on not on the same page and the ball travels out for a goal-kick.

33' OVER! Ziyech has to hit the target! Chelsea work their way through the Newcastle defence down the right flank. James delivers a fine low cross into the box that deflects into the path of Ziyech. The winger has a free strike at goal, only to smash it over the bar.
31' Rudiger fires a low cross into the box with power, but Havertz fails to react in time and the ball strikes his ankle rather than his boot.
29' DISALLOWED GOAL! Ziyech collects in space and fires a left-footed strike into the net courtesy of a deflection. However, he does not celebrate as he knows that he is offside. That's twice that Ziyech has strayed.
27' Darlow takes his time over a clearance out from the back to infuriate the Blues. Tuchel is remonstrating with the fourth official about timewasting.

1' We're under way at St James' Park.
Newcastle have lost five of their last six Premier League meetings with Chelsea, winning the other 1-0 in January 2020.
Chelsea are without a litany of talent this afternoon. Lukaku, Mateo Kovacic and Timo Werner are sidelined due to injury, while Mason Mount has been forced out with illness. Tuchel made a number of changes for the EFL Cup, but has reverted to the side more or less that thrashed Norwich 7-0 in the Premier League last time out. Christensen, Kante and Havertz all come into the fold as Chalobah drops to the bench.
Newcastle are unchanged from the side that drew against Palace last time out. Wilson leads the line alongside Saint-Maximin with Longstaff, Hayden and Fraser holding down the midfield. There's no place for Willock or Almiron as Jones opts for solidity in his team.
CHELSEA SUBS: Kepa Arrizabalaga, Marcos Alonso, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Marcus Bettinelli, Trevor Chalobah, Saul Niguez, Ross Barkley, Cesar Azpilicueta, Malang Sarr.
CHELSEA (3-4-3): Edouard Mendy; Thiago Silva, Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger; Reece James, N'Golo Kante, Jorginho, Ben Chilwell; Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havertz, Callum Hudson-Odoi.

NEWCASTLE (5-3-2): Karl Darlow; Javier Manquillo, Emill Krafth, Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark, Matt Ritchie; Isaac Hayden, Sean Longstaff, Ryan Fraser; Callum Wilson, Allan Saint-Maximin.
Chelsea enter the contest top of the Premier League on a run of three-straight league victories. The Blues have won five in a row in all competitions, although they required penalties to see off Southampton to reach the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup during the week. Thomas Tuchel knows that his team cannot afford to lose focus in the league amid the tussle with Liverpool and Manchester City at the top. Chelsea need to be ruthless in the final third even without the injured Romelu Lukaku.
Newcastle are winless in the Premier League this term, taking only four points from their opening nine fixtures. Although better days have been promised for the Magpies following their takeover by PIF, matters must improve on the pitch in the short term to ensure the club remain in the Premier League. Graeme Jones began life in takeover charge after Steve Bruce's sacking with a solid point against Crystal Palace. However, the Tynesiders have to be flawless this afternoon against the Blues.
Good afternoon and welcome to the live commentary of the Premier League clash between Newcastle United and Chelsea at St James' Park.
